If you're looking for a lengthy (as in 100+ hours) RPG that blends quick and dirty gameplay with heaping plates of detail and sophisticated character development, no one else comes close to this series. Don't expect innovation, but remember that's only one-half of the equation. The other half -- exemplary gameplay -- is what Beyond Divinity has in spades.

Beyond Divinity is the latest title from Larian Studios; you might know them from their previous RPG “Divine Divinity”. I never played the game but apparently it was a very good RPG with a strong story and solid game play.
DarkZero (2004)
This is a much better game than its predecessor. There is more to see and do, less bugs (after patching) and the gameplay has been tightened a little. It's always fun exploring a completely non-linear game world where nothing is off limits, and there's an interesting assortment of friends and foes to meet along the way. The soul forge brings a new idea to the table, and it's genuinely an idea that works well and will raise a smile in most gamers. However, the game still has its faults. The graphics really needed a facelift to ensure the game looked like its modern day counterparts. It's also a huge time commitment for any gamer to get the most out of this, but it's hard to criticise the ambition of the developers in producing the world they have.

Sounds are not remarkable, save for the great voice acting, music is much better and can be really quite emotive stuff. Graphics, as I have said, are nothing to shout about and to be honest, the main characters animations are actually quite poor. But it all scoots about with silky speed and overall presentation is more than adequate for the job at hand. In all other respects, Beyond Divinity is excellent. You could wait for Divine Divinity 2: Diviner Divine Divinity (suggested working title) *guffaw*, but I see no reason why you shouldn't jump straight in now, because it could be a lengthy wait.

A few years back, Larian Studios shipped Divine Divinity for Windows. It was a game with a curious name, yet it won a place in the hearts of many RPG fanatics and critics alike. Now Larian's back with Beyond Divinity, the beefed-up sequel to Divine Divinity. This time around, the Divinity series is offering more party-based RPG gameplay that's sure to keep fans of the original playing for countless hours. The open-ended gameplay ensures that RPG fanatics will get the most for their money, though it may be a bit too much of a time-sink for the average gamer looking for a quick dungeon crawling fix.
GameZone (May 05, 2004)
It is a shame when a game is released and it leaves you with a feeling that it is incomplete. Such was the reaction when the first game, Divine Divinity, was released. Many people felt that the game, while it was a blast to play, was lacking depth. So the development team decided to go back to the drawing board to attempt to create a game that fulfilled the player’s expectations. Two years have passed and we now have Beyond Divinity, but how good is it? Read on to find out.
IGN (May 06, 2004)
Beyond Divinity is the successor to Larian Studio's Divine Divinity. Taken together, they will clearly go down in gaming history as possessing the two silliest titles of all time. But wait: there's more! Divine Divinity was also one of the most enterprising RPGs to appear in quite a while. It didn't offer a complex combat system or extraordinary graphics, but supplied solid, largely nonlinear gameplay, a host of quests and a huge, interactive, event-filled environment. As you might expect, these qualities have carried over into Beyond Divinity. Companies with a hit on their hands are usually smart enough to quickly turnaround their current engine in a successor game that pragmatically offers more of the same. What probably won't be expected by fans of Divine Divinity is the degree to which Larian has deliberately tried to improve upon the original.
GameSpot (May 03, 2004)
Then again, you'll have plenty of time to listen to the music during this game's lengthy journey. Beyond Divinity, like its predecessor, is a sprawling adventure that gives you the freedom to play as you wish. It's actually somewhat more focused than the first game, and it gives you clear-cut objectives that you're free to accomplish using your own devices. The game's core elements--the combat, the questing, and the exploration--are all effectively implemented, and the two-character dynamic and open-ended skill system introduced in Beyond Divinity should be enough to make the action seem just different enough to those who have already poured dozens of hours into the first game.

Worth Playing (Jun 17, 2004)
One of the biggest challenges in reviewing games is giving a title a fair shake when compared against its competition. The other big challenge is to let a game stand on its own, separate from any of it predecessors. Beyond Divinity had a steep hill to climb. If it was going to stand out as a worthy buy it was going to have to match or exceed the first game in the series Divine Divinity and hold up well to the recent master-stroke of RPGs, Sacred. Unfortunately Beyond Divinity, while fun, doesn’t quite live up to its promise.
PC Zone Benelux (Jun, 2004)
PC Games (Germany) (Apr 15, 2004)
GameBanshee (Jul 13, 2004)
So what can we say about Beyond Divinity? It's a good, solid action/RPG game with lots of bells and whistles. It's not a bad game, but neither does it have that something that makes it a great game. If combat-focused hybrids of this sort are your bag, then you could certainly do a lot worse than spending your $50 for Beyond Divinity.
Jolt (UK) (May 22, 2004)
Overall, Beyond Divinity is a pretty decent example of the genre. It plays a bit like a cross between Diablo and some of the old Ultima games, in that it can be fast and furious at some times and moody and atmospheric at others. If you enjoyed the original Divine Divinity then it’s a fair bet that you’ll like Beyond too. But although it’s solid, there’s nothing here to get really excited about. I can’t help feeling that the RPG scene has grown rather stale over the last year or so and it needs something innovative and different to give it a kick up the backside. This, regrettably, isn’t it.
GameStar (Germany) (Apr, 2004)
CanardPC (May 26, 2004)
Quandary (Jun, 2004)
As you can probably discern from the tone of this review, I was not exactly bowled over by BD. Larian did obviously listen to their fans, and on the basis of this feedback tried to adjust the gameplay to deliver a better gaming experience set in the Divinity universe. However, you will inevitably find yourself getting tired of all the levers and keys, and frustrated by the scripting bugs and inventory glitches. I can also guarantee that from the very first frame of the opening storyboard sequence, the voice of the death knight will begin to grate on you. He sounds like a U.S. Marines drill seargent, full of in-your-face 'attitude', a voice that is totally out of place in a fantasy setting like this.
GameDaily (Dec 06, 2006)
One part buddy-cop movie, one part deep, immersive world, and more old-school RPG than you've seen stocked on a shelf in almost half a decade. Not since Baldur's Gate II has an RPG included this much depth and strategy mixed with stat-churning. The music is atmospheric, the story is compelling, and the characters have a nearly forgotten feature called "personality." However, Beyond Divinity is also so deep many RPG fans may not have the minimum 50 hours to complete the game. The concept is fair, the presentation is good, and the execution is outstanding.

Game Over Online (Jul 06, 2004)
Beyond Divinity could have been fun. I liked the quirky humor of Divine Divinity, but something went wrong here. The humor is off (like when a guy claims what he vomits looks tastier than what a cook creates), lots of things in the game are broken or just don’t work as they should (despite a couple patches already), and Larian just tried to cram in too many complicated quests for the game to be breezily fun like the original (why have just a dungeon level when you can make the player pass two or ten tests as well?). So I’d recommend you be wary of buying the game, and hope for better things when Larian releases Divine Divinity 2.

Beyond Divinity is fine, but it’s not as good as its predecessor. In spite of any number of small improvements, the new game feels more stale and by-the- numbers than the first one. The interface is, if possible, clunkier than before—especially when it comes to switching among the multiple characters you now control—and the storytelling feels less inspired and more routine.
1UP (Aug 11, 2004)
Let's talk about first impressions. The original Divine Divinity made a bad one, starting with a title that could have sounded good only to someone whose knowledge of English came from a Michelin phrase book. The sequel, Beyond Divinity, makes a better one. The title's not quite so god-awful, for one thing, and the designers have added multicharacter parties, fixing one of the original game's shortcomings.
Absolute Games ( (Aug 19, 2004)
Joystick (French) (Jun, 2004)
A oublier d'urgence.
