Birth of America is een leuke TBS-game die vooral liefhebbers van historische simulaties zal aanspreken.

Tout en se positionnant fermement comme un jeu de simulation historique et en abordant un sujet peu couru, particulièrement de notre coté de l’Atlantique, Birth of America propose une approche capable de plaire aussi bien aux grognards du wargame qu’aux jeunes joueurs curieux de stratégie. Avec cette première pierre d’un édifice, Ageod montre d’entrée de jeu que ses paroles sont à la hauteur de ses actes. On attend désormais les prochains volets avec d’autant plus d’impatience.

Birth of America ist ein reinrassiges Rundenstrategiespiel, das im Gegensatz zu seinen Vorgängern mit weniger Komplexität, Drag’n’Drop Funktionalität und verbesserter Grafik daher kommt. Trotzdem hat Birth of America seine Schattenseiten. Mit wenig Übersicht und einigen kleinen Steuerungsmankos muss man zurecht kommen. Auch die musikalische Untermalung lässt zu wünschen übrig. Insgesamt ist Birth of America aber ein recht solider Vertreter der rundenbasierten Strategiespielzunft.

In my opinion, there is nothing like a good strategy game... Unfortunately, Birth of America, the new game available through Steam from French developer Strategy First is nothing like a good strategy game either. You’d think the French would know something about re-creating the American Revolution and the French and Indian War in strategy form, but no dice on this one.

Birth of America is a good historic turn based strategy game that is not only fun to play but very educational. As with many historically based games this has all kinds of facts included along with the fun play. For strategy lovers Birth of America is a well-made and easy to play game with plenty of challenging but very informative historic play.

For those willing to tolerate a few boardgame-style abstractions, a little thumb-twiddling (sometimes turn calculations can take a minute or two) and the odd bit of bafflement (fundamentally simple, the game does have a few confusing elements like supply simulation), purchase options are pretty diverse. Download versions are available via Steam, Matrixgames.com and AGEOD's own site for around £20. If you scour online retailers and high street stores you'll probably find boxed copies in the £10 to £15 price bracket. £10 for a wargame so solidly constructed and in tune with its unusual subject matter? That's downright scandalous.

If you're so inclined, you can copy a bunch of files and e-mail them to someone else, who can then drop them into a folder, take his turn, and e-mail them back. It's hardly a user-friendly way to have a multiplayer game, but then again, Ageod made only a handful of concessions in what is essentially just another hardcore military wargame made for genre enthusiasts. Birth of America has all the necessary elements working under its hood, including a terrific implementation of weather and terrain and a hearty AI that keeps you on your toes. Yet the attempts to appeal to the masses feel meager, and the game loses some of its identity as a result.

Comme bien souvent dans le petit monde des wargames, on se retrouve en présence d'un titre qui ne se laisse pas amadouer très facilement. Assez austère au premier abord, il dévoile néanmoins ses atouts lorsqu'on persévère. Doté d'une IA très efficace et d'un contexte historique que l'on n'a pas l'habitude de voir dans les jeux vidéo, il saura convaincre les amateurs du genre qui néanmoins, regretteront l'absence d'options diplomatiques et d'économie et surtout le mode multijoueur limité aux parties par e-mails.

There are a few shoddy parts to the game, where it could have been rounded off a little more pleasingly. Things like sound needed more attention, as did the documentation. Note to foreign game developers in general here: Hire an English speaking writer for the love of all that is good.
