Call of Duty 2 doesn't break much new ground, throwing you into one large-scale battle after another just as the first game did. But somehow, instead of feeling like a stale retread or losing steam halfway through, it manages to be a blast from start to finish. In terms of length, it doesn't feel much longer than the original, but once again, there's no filler content here, and the missions have enough replayability to make up for any complaints anyone might have over the game's length. A little more meat to the multiplayer would have been nice, but overall, Infinity Ward has crafted a sequel that's every ounce as fun as its predecessor -- which makes Call of Duty 2 a game just about everyone should check out.
I admit to being biased. I've been waiting for this one for a while. And I told Breeden that I was in charge and I got to review this one. Sometimes it's good to be the king, baby. CoD2 is definitely the king as well. They get a perfect score!

War might be hell but Call of Duty 2 is pure heaven to play. If you loved the first one then get ready to reenlist for another tour of duty. And for hardcore historians or those who just want something special, check out the deluxe edition with exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes footage of the game's development.
Developer Infinity Ward did a lot of things right with the first Call of Duty, especially in terms of cinematic presentation and intense action. In a lot of ways, it was the best wartime FPS of its time. Call of Duty 2, whether you play it on a gaming PC or the Xbox 360, is to is predecessor as the 360 itself is to the NES. Everything that makes war games entertaining - the feeling of defending freedom, the immersion in a warzone and the glorious thrill of being a hero - is done far better in this title than in any before it. Quite simply, this is the best WWII game ever made.
Game Watcher (Oct 30, 2005)
I would have to say that Call of Duty 2 continues the great game play that the original Call of Duty started. The graphics and sounds are intense, the single player campaign is extremely compelling, the multiplayer is fast paced fun and the overall game play is down right awesome. The only bad feature would be the health regeneration feature in the single player campaign. For any gamer that wants to spend the next few months in World War II, I suggest you get this game. Just make sure you have the machine to run this game in all its glory.
Netjak (Dec 07, 2005)
Overall, Call of Duty 2 keeps the idea of the World War 2 shooter from being too stale. Bringing to the table solid gameplay elements, great visuals, and even better sound makes this game the culmination of the World War 2 FPS experience. The only significant drawback is after playing Call of Duty 2, you may never want to play a European Theater of Operations based WW2 shooter ever again. The other end of the world hasn’t been touched on enough, so the Call of Duty series may end up being on that and, and bringing in a relatively fresher view of the whole war. Until then, Call of Duty 2 is like the cherry to top the sundae. I highly recommend playing this quality title.

Gameguru Mania (Nov 17, 2005)
Although Call of Duty 2 goes down the very linear scripted levels path, I found this highly enjoyable. If you liked the original Call of Duty, then you're sure to enjoy the sequel, which stays true to the strengths of its predecessor.
PC Games (Germany) (Nov 28, 2005)
Softpedia (Nov 06, 2005)
It's impeccable. It's exactly what I expected and this is something that most games nowadays cannot achieve. If you liked the previous titles in the series, you'll love this one. If you hate WWII games, give it a try, you may like it. This is one of the few series out there that actually gets better with every new version. It's the ultimate war experience. You'll forget every other WWII game!

Video Game Talk (Dec 10, 2005)
If played on the standard level of difficulty, you will blow through the 10 missions of the single player game in about 10 to 12 hours. I recommend starting on the Hardened difficulty to extend your game experience out to 15 to 20 hours. The polished multiplayer game will lengthen your playtime at even greater volume. If you are a fan of the World War II genre or even just excellent FPS games, pick up Call of Duty 2 as soon as humanly possible. The compelling single player offensive and the bug free multiplayer addition make Call of Duty 2 worth the full retail price of $49.99.
ToTheGame (Nov 07, 2005)
Call of Duty 2 offers one of the most realistic War World II experiences I’ve ever played. Everything from the sights, sounds, battles, and chaos is detailed and reproduced into this title. From the first mission in Stalingrad to the last one in Germany you’ll be on your toes keeping an eye open for enemy snipers, tanks, and mortars the entire time. With so many FPS out there this season, you can not go wrong with this title.
PC Action (Dec 19, 2005)
ActionTrip (Nov 01, 2005)
In a nutshell, while still sticking to the same principles that made the original game so great, in many ways, Call of Duty 2 goes well beyond what Infinity Ward has achieved in Call of Duty. Little things like how you need to hold your breath to shoot a sniper rifle and the use of smoke grenades, as well as the much more significant improvements that deal with the technology and the level design in general, show that Infinity Ward has invested a lot of time and effort into this project. Call of Duty 2 is every bit as nail-bitingly fun as the original and that's a good enough reason for any action fan to get it. Though the single-player campaign is even shorter and feels slightly disjointed, there is always the multiplayer mode to further justify the price tag. I wholeheartedly recommend spending your hard-earned cash on this one. The amazing rollercoaster ride that is the Call of Duty series is well-worth the price of admission.
GameSpot (Oct 25, 2005)
Call of Duty 2 is just about everything you would hope for and expect from the sequel to one of the most successful World War II shooters of all time. Its varied campaign, excellent sound and gameplay design, and generally good AI make it a worthy successor to the original. At the same time, though, it's still a World War II shooter, and if you've grown weary of them, then Call of Duty 2's lack of new material might turn you away. It can also be murderous on your computer if you have modest hardware. What Call of Duty 2 does do well is nail down just about all aspects that define an ideal first-person shooter. If you liked the original and have been thirsting for more, Call of Duty 2 will definitely deliver that.

FiringSquad (Oct 27, 2005)
Call of Duty 2 in many ways can be criticized for changing less in the formula than the Call of Duty expansion pack did, but then you face the question: what else would you change? It’s just that damn good. Yeah, we’ve fought World War II several times over by now and each of us have killed enough virtual Germans to have them appealing for help from the UN, but there’s no denying that the subject matter remains compelling despite being worn several times.

So as I fire up Call of Duty 2 to “get in the mood” for this review, I'm a little tired. This fact becomes much more obvious as I load up the first mission in the Russian campaign and immediately realize that I've got to wake up in order to stay alive for longer than a few seconds. I'm about to fight for every inch of ground against smart enemies and steep odds through trenches and across fields. This isn't going to be easy or quiet. It's tough, loud, frantic, bloody and so much fun I smile the entire time. This is Call of Duty 2 doing what it does best, dropping you smack dab in the middle of the action, explosions, bodies, smoke and all of the rest--and this is only the first mission.
Game Captain (Nov 26, 2005)
Game Over Online (Nov 17, 2005)
While the most apparent subtle changes are probably the most controversial tweaks to the Call of Duty formula, it doesn’t overturn the fact that this is a worthy successor to the franchise. The fast paced action is still the centerpiece of the game, and the action is engaging enough to capture even the most jaded first person shooter vet who’s probably tired of the numerous WWII titles that’ve been released. If you have the machine that can run the game and the tolerance for the regeneration mechanic, you’ll have a great shooter on your hands.
Overall, Infinity Ward has once again made the best WW2 shooter on the market. The single player campaign is fantastic and alone is worth every penny this game will cost gamers. The multiplayer on the other hand is not improved in any manner save graphically. In fact the multiplayer falls short of the bar set by Call of Duty: United Offensive. Offering less choice is never an improvement, and hopefully Infinity Ward will remedy this in the future - or maybe someone such as Gray Matter Studios will make an expansion pack and fix what's broken.
GameStar (Germany) (Dec, 2005)

Armchair Empire, The (Dec 28, 2005)
I loved the first entry into the series and the expansion pack to Call of Duty. There have been a lot of first person shooters based on World War II in the past few years and I think the Call of Duty series is the best of the bunch in terms of creating an engrossing cinematic single player campaign. Although I'm not a fan of multiplayer gaming, I know that many people liked the original as well for its solid offerings. This sequel to the series also offers a variety of multiplayer game modes as well as a single player campaign worthy to follow the first installment.
84 (Nov 18, 2005)
Ever since Call of Duty, we've been seeing WW2 first person shooters growing by the bushes. However, none of those have managed to even come close to the singleplayer experience that CoD provided. The most intense WW2 FPS ever has returned! But should we be happy with that?
83 (Nov 03, 2005)
Playfuls (Nov 26, 2005)
So many FPS-type productions have already milked the WWII theme, that I didn’t think that it would still have a little bit of juice left. I’ve already started imagining it as a skinny guy, resembling those poor people from the concentration camps. Once again, Normandy, Africa, Russia, once again, killing Nazis by the dozen, that’s the kind of things I thought about upon finishing the game. Technically, the game is a piece of candy. The problem resides with the feeling, where it has been seriously handicapped by the early release of Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood. Both games tend to show the tragic part of the war, both offer some degree of team-play. Unfortunately for CoD2, BiA offers a lot more, and earns my honest sympathy for the tactical part.
JustPressPlay (Nov 06, 2005)
The single player mode is very short. I managed tofinish this game in about 4-5 hours. That really doesn’t say much forthe single player mode. I’m sure there will be hordes of people willingto play the multiplayer mode though. If you’re looking to play only the single player mode, you might bebetter off renting the game and just finishing it in a day. If you haveany anticipations of playing the multi-player aspect, then I woulddefinitely add this title to your collection.
PC Powerplay (Dec, 2005)
Everything in Call of Duty 2 feels similarly polished and well thought out, Including the solid if uninspired multiplayer mode. It all amounts to a brief—but entertaining—ride. Like a good meatloaf, it expertly scratches that comfort food itch, leaving you well-satisfied until the craving hits you again, months later—just in time for the inevitable expansion.
Bordersdown (Nov, 2005)
Call of Duty 2 is a magnificent cinematic experience. The narrative is close to being non-existent, the action is made up of a number of set pieces, with a linear approach to mission layouts, forcing the gamer to achieve one objective before another section of the map comes into play, and the single-player game isn’t very long (6-7 hours should see most gamers complete the normal difficulty level) but this game is an exhausting, exhilarating ride which will hold you captivated 'til the very last second of the last mission. It’s a mixture of every World War Two blockbuster condensed into one package, an explosion of Saturday Matinee adrenaline which will evoke memories of playing in the back garden with your Eagle-Eyed Action Man. If you want to play the best example of the WW2 FPS sub-genre then you need to look no further than this title.
TTGamer (Nov 08, 2005)
What a year this has been for the PC FPS gamer - with so many quality FPS titles available in recent times, some gamers may already be content with their collection so far but it can't be denied that Call of Duty 2 is up there with the best of 2005. While some areas could have used more polish, particularly the AI which is a tad disappointing, the experience the game has to offer is unmatched. If you still have enough interest left to play one more World War II FPS game, make sure it's Call of Duty 2, because you owe it to yourself to play the best one ever made.
G4 TV: X-Play (Mar 22, 2006)
So we’ve played a lot of Call of Duty over the years, and although the formula remains the same, we’re hardly ever bored by it. Call of Duty 2 succeeds as a continuation of the franchise where other sequels have failed (including the console versions of Call of Duty). Just about every single moment is a treat to play. There’s no feature bloat, and there are no dud missions--just quality gaming from start to finish. That’s just about all we can ask for.
GameDaily (Dec 16, 2005)
So, if you enjoyed CoD and wish to move to continue to the next phase of the experience, definitely pick up this game. Just be sure that you have a computer that is strong enough to back up the fantastic graphics and sounds. It's been said many times before, but it worth repeating... if you're not playing this game with surround sound, you're missing out! So, if you're ready for a great game experience, lock and load, because it's time to jump into the WWII fray yet again!
80 (UK) (Nov 03, 2005)
Justified cynicism aside, Infinity Ward's latest effort unquestionably refines the cinematic World War II shooter genre to new giddy heights of bombastic brilliance. Taken in isolation, it's a thrilling demonstration of how far the genre has come in delivering compelling combat and wrapping that in the most cinematic and immersive fashion we've seen. If only Infinity Ward wasn't so content to trip on the bootlaces of its own lack of gameplay ambition we'd be more excited.
UOL Jogos (Nov 21, 2005)
1UP (Oct 25, 2005)
Pulling its trigger condenses everything that's right about Call of Duty 2 into a single moment. Online or off it is the epitome of visceral thrill seeking. Think of it as the big-budget summer blockbuster movie: you don't go to be impressed by its thought-provoking drama or brilliant character portrayal; you go for the ride, the special effects and above all else the euphoric feeling of going through it all and coming out the other side.
Thunderbolt Games (Nov 13, 2005)
Call of Duty 2 is by no means a bad game, at all. It’s a great game, actually, and if you’ve never played the first one and you move straight into this one, you’ll probably want to give it a “ten out of ten” yourself. For me, I was a little disappointed. Maybe I was a victim of my own expectations, but I really think it comes down to the fact that this game is essentially Call of Duty with a few bells-and-whistles. While I certainly can’t criticize that game, I find it hard to swallow a sequel that does little in terms of improving the core gameplay, is still too short, and costs fifty dollars. If you loved Call of Duty, it’s not like you aren’t going to like the game. You just might be a little disappointed.
Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 2 is one such title and if you've been less than impressed with previous offerings of D-Day existing within the T rated confines of the Medal of Honor series, prepare for pure hell on Earth. While a videogame can obviously never hope to create all aspects of such a cataclysmic event, gamers will be able to participate in the closest reproduction of Normandy ever attempted.

Call of Duty was my introduction into the online world of gaming and now I am running four servers devoted to the CoD series. Infinity Ward/Activision have certainly shot themselves in the foot with this one. They will be very lucky if it can maintain online playability for as long as its predecessors in its current state. I'm afraid it's missing the wow factor and its nothing you haven't already seen apart from the awesome graphics. Some would say mutton dressed as lamb and I have to say that I agree with them. That being said, being a big fan of this series I can honestly say that Single Player is absolutely fantastic and certainly leaves you wanting more.
Edge (Nov 24, 2005)
Thanks to the crisp allure of HD and the innate joys of new hardware, Call Of Duty's time is now, if ever. Its strengths are derived largely from its technology, fresh as it feels on Microsoft's own, though the intensity of the experience, the quality of its 5.1 sound and its context-sensitive squad chatter deserves not to be understated. For those who can tolerate having their brain beaten numb by it, the game entails often enthralling, occasionally even aweinspiring sights and sounds. But little is there that's new compared to much that needs renewal.

Gamernode (Nov 04, 2005)
So how do I, a massive Call of Duty fanboy, conclude a review on a game that I had such high expectations of? Well if it's more intense World War historical battle you're after, then get out there and grab a copy. You won't be disappointed about how great it looks or how much fun and full-on the game can be. If you frequent LAN's or enjoy slaughtering your mates (or strangers), online multiplayer is just as entertaining as the original and furthers longevity to the game once you've finished the single player campaign. If you're like me and you were looking forward to new gameplay and more freedom of action then maybe I'd think twice before shelling out your hard earned pocket money.
Gamekult (Nov 04, 2005)
