I’m sure I’ll be playing this until the next installment of Modern Warfare 3 comes out and I’ll be interested to see what they can lift from this experience and what they can jettison. More work is needed on the campaigns of all Call of Duty titles but they’ve almost reached an apex in the multiplayer. Sooner or later, as with Halo or Gears of War, the entire structure of the franchise is going to become too familiar and will need to be shaken up somewhat but I still think Call of Duty has room for one more ‘traditional’ on the rails ride through the war-zones of the world.

There is so much content packed into this game that I couldn't even fit all of it into my review. However, even the multiplayer alone is enough to warrant this rating.
Call of Duty: Black Ops spends a little too much time in the bunker playing it safe, but it's a robust, quality product from top to bottom. The campaign is brief but memorable and the multiplayer has taken millions of hours of real-world testing to heart. The total amount of worthwhile content makes paying full price for most other games feel like a crime. Treyarch has closed the gap between its games and the Modern Warfare franchise with boundless customization, a keen sense of what makes the formula a success and listening to the fans. You won't regret answering the call once again.

MUST BUY!
Call of Duty: Black Ops is a remarkably fun and inventive shooter; sure it has its share of imperfections, but they're all minor when the game is this fun to play. Though the main campaign is a bit on the short side, it's filled with thrilling set pieces and a compelling narrative along with the always exciting multiplayer suite. Say goodbye to your wife and kids, kiss the sun goodbye - your new Call of Duty fix has arrived.
We Got This Covered
This is easily the best game of the year, thus far. The single player campaign, while maybe not as polished as in Modern Warfare 2, is still better than almost any other game on the market. As for the multiplayer, it’s more or less perfect and will surely dethrone Modern Warfare 2 as the king of online shooters. You can’t go wrong with Call of Duty: Black Ops, that’s the bottom line. It’s an incredible package and it is most definitely worth the $60.
As if you ever doubted it, Call of Duty is still the best military shooter out there and by quite some margin. It seems its competitors can only watch from a distance and take notes as this juggernaut of FPS gaming ploughs a wide path towards the genre's future.
Treyarch isn't trying to reinvent the formula which made Modern Warfare 2 the most successful video game of all time, but it has laid down solid multiplayer foundations while adding a series of necessary and intelligent tweaks - which should be music to the ears of the game's many fans. A spectacular but silly single-player campaign rounds off the package, and while it comes without Modern Warfare 2's ambitious (but unsuccessful) attempt at carving out a political message, Black Ops offers its own thoroughly enjoyable romp through some entertaining set-pieces. I've considered myself a Call of Duty fan for many years, and I've held a deep-seated distrust of Treyarch since Call of Duty 3. No longer.
While it holds more first week sales than any other game before it, Black Ops isn't the series' high point. What we have here is a refined and extremely confident product from a studio that has found its feet in the FPS world. This sequel captures everything that makes the series great, and apart from the odd mishap, is engrossing throughout. If the short campaign doesn't hold your attention past the credits, the online multiplayer almost certainly will. Right now, we're intrigued to see what's coming next, especially as the Call of Duty series heads into a period of major transition.
While it may not take the signature Call of Duty action to dizzying new heights, Black Ops is a thoroughly excellent game. New modes and mechanics give a jolt of energy to the lively competitive multiplayer, and the engrossing new campaign develops into one of the best in the series. Combat training allows anyone to enjoy the thrills of arena combat and the satisfaction of leveling up, and the opportunities for cooperative play, local competition, and community video creation provide even more outlets for entertainment. Call of Duty: Black Ops lives up to the top-notch pedigree that the series has earned, giving players an awesome new shooter to enjoy just in time for the holidays.

Black Ops' single-player, while not the best, is different. Treyarch has pushed the multiplayer as far as it could go. True, you've played it all before, and that kind of familiarity keeps Black Ops from being a game that truly represents the absolute pinnacles of 2010, but never has the multiplayer been this good. Now, it's time for something dramatically different. Annualized sequels will only work so well for so long, but in the now, Call of Duty: Black Ops keeps the series worth playing for another year.
Adding everything up, Black Ops has to be taken with a pinch of salt, as a list of improvements on Modern Warfare 2’s hit skeleton: lean, dedicated servers (but only for rent), as well as everything we bullied the last Call of Duty for, along with a campaign that can basically be described as a tram ride and a level of optimization that made our editor-in-chief wonder why he handed me the game without a solid upgrade coupon in the first place.
Call of Duty: Black Ops is a great overall package that has a ton of content to enjoy. The multiplayer modes are largely based on what was established by Modern Warfare, but the twists that Treyarch throws in work well. My biggest issue with the multiplayer is that the new Wager Matches, while fun in their own right, don't compare favorably to the high-quality and addictive leveling system and game modes from Modern Warfare 1 and 2. Single-player is as exhaustingly fast-paced as ever with large set pieces that try to take the attention off of the lackluster AI of both friends and enemies. That withstanding, the story is the best I've ever seen from a Call of Duty game. Couple both of those substantial offerings with more Zombie content than some full-fledged zombie games and Black Ops is certainly worth your time, even if you aren't already a fan of the series.
Ultimately, there is little doubt that Black Ops will sate the hunger of those simply wanting more Call of Duty, but beyond that it seem unlikely that it will broaden the palettes of gamers or indeed the genre; and for such a big budget, high profile release, we can’t help but feel a little disappointed with that.
This year, Treyarch has done a good job making a fun campaign and some really interesting multiplayer, but some of the old problems with the franchise are creeping back in. And on PC, Black Ops is nearly unplayable for many gamers, and the best we can do is wait for a patch to deliver the smooth, responsive FPS action we've had since the first Call of Duty was released over six years ago. Black Ops does well, mostly due to the sheer amount of exciting and fun multiplayer content, but I've got some serious concerns over where Call of Duty is headed.
OMGN: Online Multiplayer Games Network
Black Ops is a worthy title of the franchise. With its excellent story presentation, tweaked multi-player, the return of zombie mode and the inclusion of bots for practice, Black Ops, for better or worse, is recommended. The PC version has become somewhat stable, but it's hard to tell how well it will perform for any given setup. If you really must play Black Ops on the PC, you'll have to just dive in and pray. And keep praying that whatever team is in charge for the next installment will get its act together.
Sadly, in it's current form, there are simply too many issues to recommend Black Ops as a viable new platform for those who have heavily invested in other franchises lately. We're taking the liberty of assuming Treyarch can get a handle on the problems with a patch, but until that time, be warned.
Black Ops is an excellent entry into the series, even if it is fairly inconsequential. It doesn’t add anything radical, but like the past few Call of Duty games, it adds enough small things to make it different enough to call a sequel. Thankfully, these changes are mostly interface-based. Dedicated servers are back! The customization is better! You can do a stupid dive move! There isn’t anything mind-boggling here, but it’s just as addictive as Call of Duty has ever been. If you haven’t been burned out on the series by now, Black Ops will still be a great deal of fun, and if you’ve given up on Call of Duty’s PC versions, it might just coax you back.
Gamers Daily News
The gameplay is similar to that of the previous series, some new features such as making your own player insignia’s, purchasing your weapons, attachments, and contracts for achievements have added a little bit of excitement to the game, but overall I felt its just a re-skin of an old game, hopefully with map making mods and tools this one might be able to keep players interested longer, and you won’t just see the diehard soldiers on the battlefield.
Ten Ton Hammer
Call of Duty: Black Ops is exactly what everyone expected it to be—Modern Warfare 2.5. Actually, let’s call it Modern Warfare 2: Vietnam, to reflect the new setting. This is what the previous owners want and love, so those of you who love it probably already own the game and are fragging every night. For those of you who avoided the craze and didn’t like it to begin with, stay far away. So long as this game keeps selling 10 million copies, the formula isn’t going to change much, as Black Ops proves.
Absolute Games (AG.ru)
Trying to put "yeah, it's OK" into a full article is harder than one might think. Games that stir strong feelings are much easier to write about, simply because I'll have a ready supply of superlatives to churn out into paragraphs. In this case, there's really not much else to say here—the FPS is a somewhat stagnant genre nowadays, and Black Ops is Exhibit A as to why. There's no real creative risk being taken, and while that might be just fine for sales figures, it doesn't bode well for Call of Duty: Black Ops' ability to stand out artistically in the immensely flooded FPS market.
I honestly, truly wish I could say more in Black Ops' favor. This is the first Call of Duty in which Treyarch has stepped out of the shadow of Infinity Ward, but the triumph has been ruined by an unbearable PC port, and this is coming from a game that had promised to do much more for PC gamers than Modern Warfare 2 did. The truly stunning single-player campaign offsets many of the multiplayer's flaws, and the Zombie mode is tons of hilarious fun, but neither manages to be lengthy or deep enough to make Black Ops the truly great game that I know it should be. This is an incredibly well-made game that, once patched, will easily sit among the hottest titles of the year. Once the multiplayer is fixed, feel free to pop at least two more points, most likely even three, into this review's score. I can only review what I've got in front of me, however, and what I've got is a superb game that has pissed all over itself.
Call of Duty: Black Ops does many things right on the PC such as dedicated servers and high resolutions, but it's just really buggy. I shouldn't be experiencing lag or performance issues with the computer I have, but it's there. Let's hope Treyarch fixes them up quick. If they do so, the PC version does warrant a higher grade, but right now I can't give it a better grade for the product that's delivered to me.
