Captain Quazar

Let me tell you about the 'flip side' to Captain Quasar. The intro sequence and subsequent cut-scenes. They're brilliant. Absolutely fantastic. I don't think I've seen a funnier title sequence since Z's head-banging robots. And this continues throughout. Every animation is a joy to behold and funnier than a lot of 'proper' cartoons. The Captain's heroic laugh, his Popeye-style mumbling, the rapping droids (funnier than it sounds). It's just such a shame that the actual game so spectacularly fails to live up to its presentation.

The game demands an excellent gamepad (try the Microsoft Sidewinder GamePad) and, like any isometric game, it can be difficult to align your gun with your target. In summary, Captain Quazar is a perfect conversion of a good console game, with nothing gained but, more importantly, nothing lost.

An Ideen hat es nicht gefehlt: witzige Comic-Animationen und eine abgedrehte Story schaffen Laune bei Fans von Ballerspielen. Zu wenig Zeit wurde hingegen in die ruckelige SVGA-Grafik und die Spielbarkeit investiert. Egal ob man die umständliche Tastatur-Steuerung oder den Joystick benutzt - treffen ist reine Glückssache. Wer mit dem VGA-Modus leben kann, bekommt trotzdem viel Spaß fürs Geld.

The game itself, a pallid Total Carnage-alike, is this far down the list. I'm pointing expressively here, and chortling about it, but then I'm still broken and, in fact, have just gone deaf in my right ear. Ugh.

Mal sauer - mal Trauer, so könnte man meinen Gemütszustand während und nach dem Test von Captain Quazar bezeichnen. Selten habe ich mich mehr geärgert, daß die Steuerung bei einem Spiel so schlecht funktioniert wie hier. Denn das Potential zu einem wirklich witzigen Spiel ist auf alle Fälle vorhanden.
