PC Action

Miauw.

Catwoman is a mediocre game. The graphics are passable, and the rest of it has the feel of a bad attempt to duplicate the acrobatic gameplay that made last year's Prince of Persia such a success. But sub-par control and annoying camera work get in the way of this goal, making Catwoman a game you'll certainly want to skip.

In a nutshell, even though Catwoman offers a feisty and stylish superheroine, some neatly designed platform puzzles, coupled with fluid animation and fighting action, the game ultimately takes a nosedive by making the very thing it focuses on the most frustrating to the point of wanting to strangle small kittens. And it does so by basically not taking extra care of the camera, controls and other important design aspects that would've made the game play a lot more enjoyable. This is not a good PC port, and I only recommend it to die-hard fans of Catwoman. As it stands, they would pay to see her swing her hips in a game, comic, or indeed a video game anyway.

This single-player adventure may be worth a weekend rental for fans of the film -- and it can be easily completed in that time -- but others should steer clear of this hairball of a game.

To highlight the sheer ineptness of this title, leave your joypad alone for a few seconds and marvel at the extent to which the developers created an idle animation. Sure we've seen Sonic wag his finger at you and Mario fall to sleep, however Catwoman struts her stuff in this elaborate cut-scene styled effect whenever you let go off the pad for a few seconds, it's just a shame that this much effort wasn't put into the actual game.

There is nothing left to say, really. There is a lot of sheen resting over what's essentially an empty shell. While the development team has done a better-than-average job of heaping sparkles and gloss over these broken bones of a game, the end result is that Catwoman is a overly simplistic combat game. It's a rather interesting adventure game marred by annoying, imprecise controls and an even more maddening and nonsensical camera. And it's a game that reeks of movie license money -- a failed attempt at style over substance. If you absolutely love everything about Catwoman and you can't have enough because of your sheer love for the property, well by God, then you should probably rent this game. For rest of gaming public -- 99.9% of you -- stay far away. You don't want to cross this cat.
