Yes, that's a score of 100% ladies and gentlemen. Now, before you slam my criticism (or lack of, in this case), my score should be considered relative to computer games about chess not to computer games in general. I am NOT saying that Chessmaster 9000 is the greatest game ever made for any system, but I do believe that it's the most comprehensive chess game ever made with more features than most people would even think of utilizing. So, when you see the 100%, think to yourself. As far as chess games go, this is perfection.

That’s about the size of it folks, desk reference, tutorial, and skilled opponent, with more bang for the bite and all of it in a handsome yet modest package. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got a match with Ben that we have to get in before his afternoon nap.

In the end, it's still chess. You like it or you don't. But while there are a few small issues with the game, you're not going to find a better chess player -- or tutor -- on the market. Add to that all the options you're given, and Chessmaster 9000 is the perfect product for new players and veterans alike.

Highly polished chess action that will keep your boredom in check for many a month.

First-time Chessmaster purchasers, on the other hand, aren't going to find a better chess product out there. The version you pick doesn't really matter, as they are all top-notch products. Just look for the price that fits you, and rest assured that whatever version you end up with, is going to offer you a first class experience that's both fun and educational. Chessmaster 9000 is the latest in this fine series, and if you get it, you will have the best of a top-tier line of chess games.

Dan and I recently had a debate while he was reviewing Emperor. There wasn't any doubt that the game was good, but Dan wondered whether or not to criticize the game for not adding much to the eight-title series. The trick is in evaluating the game on its own merits while still being mindful of the need to progress from one title to another.

Thunderbolt Games (Apr 19, 2003)
One must admit that Chessmaster 9000 serves well and for quite a time, but one can't deny that it's not worth the money if you have a satisfying chess game, say, Chessmaster 7000, because chess remains chess. But those who are looking for their first chess game shouldn't hesitate, this game is the complete package; it teaches them how to play, how to become good players, and how to get their butts kicked. Also, serious players who want to raise their skill to competitive level should check this one out too, as the tutorials combined with the powerful challenge will surely benefit them.
GameZone (Sep 27, 2002)
Chessmaster 9000 is great, though isn't it always? I am not sure why they turn out new version so often. Perhaps insecurity. There are loads of features in this one. For newbies, there is teaching and great resources. For seasoned players, there are resources of a different kind. Having Josh walk you through his thought process was amazing for a player like myself. That was truly enriching. But, to many players, such things will be boring and useless. Listening to someone talk about playing chess ranks right up there with watching people catch fish on TV.
GameSpot (Sep 12, 2002)
If you're looking to pick up your first chess simulation, the decision is simple--no other product delivers the ease of use and instructional value of Chessmaster 9000. And if you own Chessmaster 8000, you might want to get Chessmaster 9000 to take your game to the next level with the new game's endgame database generator and seamless multiplayer interface.
All in all, though, you won’t find a better program for increasing your knowledge and appreciation of the ancient and amazing game of chess. Chessmaster 9000 is filled with the resources you need to improve your performance against other players but falls a bit short as a complete package because of its unforgiving AI.
