Narnia stands as a near perfect example of how to make a movie-based videogame the right way. Everything from the combat system and level design to the game’s visual presentation just scream quality. The technology alone is damn impressive. But throw in ten hours of cool bosses, refined gameplay and awesome visuals and you’ve got the recipe for one seriously entertaining game.

While this game falls a bit short of the high mark that Escape from Butcher Bay set, it certainly more than tops the offerings from the Harry Potter universe. The Chronicles of Narnia is a much cherished story and series of books. It is more than a pleasant surprise to find the video game translation not only fairly faithful to the story but also fun on its own merits. From watching the cut-scenes, I can tell that a certain amount of artistic liberty was used in making this film; still it appears that Disney has a new major franchise on its hands, although whether Narnia has the staying power of Harry Potter remains to be seen.

All in all, The Chronicles of Narnia is a great action-packet adventure game that’s enjoyable for players of all ages. It’s exciting, unique and fresh, while remaining true to the multiple gaming genres that the game covers as well as the movie that it’s based on. So whether you’re a fan of the film, a lover of action, RPG, or adventure games, or both: this game will not disappoint you.

So, if you fit in the category I alluded to earlier, then this game should be top of your list. If you loved the film and wanted a fix, this is the game for you. If you are a reasonably adept player looking for a challenging adventure, you should look elsewhere. And finally, the clincher: if you tick all the boxes but also have a PS2 or Xbox, you may be better off going for one of those versions, purely for the ease of control.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is a video game based on the just-released film of the same name, which is, in turn, based on the classic book series from C.S. Lewis. The game is a basic fantasy adventure with plenty of puzzle-solving and some light combat. It closely follows the events of the movie and actually uses quite a bit of footage from it to set up and close each stage of the game. As a result, you might not want to play this game until after you've seen the film, lest you run the risk of spoiling the plot. Even if you haven't seen the movie or read the books, you'll still be able to appreciate some of the interesting and varied levels, each of which present unique challenges that require you to utilize the special abilities of each of the four playable characters.

The difficulty and level design problems are a real shame because when it's good, Narnia is really a lot of fun, but when the designers decided to make it really tough, they managed to sap most of the fun out of what should have been a whimsical action ride through the frozen land of Narnia.
The game is a typical console adaptation of an excellent children's story. It's a combat-driven, token collecting, RPG-lite imitation of a wonderful story reflected through a glass darkly. The movie might be suitable for most children above preschool (it being rated PG in the UK and US), but this game isn't – this is one game where I think the 12+ rating is right. It may be glossy and technically competent (apart from two cut-scene crashes, the first trip to Narnia and the meeting with Father Christmas), and the animation of the characters and beasts might be good, set in decent environments, but so many other aspects of the story are missing. Important things like character motivation and development, and an honest reproduction of the story. Hence the grade below.
