Cleopatra: Riddle of the Tomb

Cleopatra offers a treat for those who enjoy Egypt-based adventure games (combining, as it does, the general Egypt theme with actual historical events and locations); yet it will also appeal to adventure gamers in general. Everything -- the artwork, the story line, the history, the user interface, and the puzzles -- comes together to make Cleopatra a game that should please adventure gamers of all ages.

Though there are some areas that could have been improved, the bottom line is that Cleopatra: A Queen’s Destiny is a fun game. The puzzles are easy enough that I solved most of them on my own, and hard enough to make me feel good about it. The story’s twists and turns and curious happenings, along with my interest in Thomas and Iris, kept me intrigued all the way to the game’s poetic ending. The surroundings allowed me to feel as if I’d visited some parts of an Egypt of bygone days. The music set the mood while the game’s sounds increased the feeling of being there. I wish all games had such an easy-to-use interface.

High quality visuals, appropriate atmosphere, and puzzles that go beyond finding keys (even to open doors!) all combine to make a good adventure game. Obviously the genre isn’t for everyone, and for this one you’ll probably want to have at least some curiosity about the post-Alexander Ancient Egypt as well, since the tasks are not usually just shoe-horned into the context. Cleopatra: Riddle of the Tomb can’t just be chopped in half like the Gordian knot, but these puzzles are pretty satisfying to unravel.

Auch dieses Spiel erfüllt wieder genau die Erwartungen für ein 1st-Person-Adventure der Entwickler Kheops Studios, mit altbewährter Technik und ohne nennenswerte Innovationen. Leider hat die Story keinen sonderlichen Tiefgang und auch die Spieldauer ist mit 6-8 Stunden nicht besonders hoch, weil u.a. die Rätsel keine wirkliche Herausforderung darstellen. Beim Start des Spieles kann man sich ein bestimmtes Sternzeichen aussuchen, was einen kleinen Einfluss auf die Variation der Rätsel, nicht aber auf den eigentlichen Storyverlauf hat. Grafisch präsentiert sich das Spiel wie gewohnt mit schön vorgerenderten Locations, die wie gehabt etwas steril wirken und wesentlich mehr Hintergrundanimationen vertragen hätten. Zudem bietet das Spiel leider nicht wirklich viele Locations zu erkunden. In Sachen Musik kann das Spiel mit abwechslungsreichen Musikstücken punkten und auch die Sprachausgaben sind von einwandfreier Qualität.

Un gioco molto gradevole e divertente, anche se, dal titolo ci si aspettava forse qualcosa di più impegnativo. Consigliato agli amanti del classico punta e clicca.

Cleopatra: Riddle of the Tomb is an easy game to recommend. While the story is certainly on the light side and the sound is kind of weak, the gameplay and the puzzles more than make up for it. Add a little bit of replay value — a refreshing addition to a genre that normally has none — and you have a title that will keep any adventure fan busy for hours.

This is a nice enough game for adventure enthusiasts who are looking for an inexpensive game with lots of puzzles. The Egyptian setting is nicely done, too. A longer game time, plus more Egyptian history, would have been a good addition. However, for casual gamers, this is a good summer release and is better than many currently on the shelves.

Se c’era bisogno di dimostrarlo ancora, i Kheops anche questa volta hanno fatto un ottimo lavoro: forse il vero problema è che di questo genere di avventure “intelligenti” ne stanno uscendo troppe e tutte (se non consideriamo l’ambientazione) sembrano assomigliarsi troppo, Cleopatra non fa eccezione, comunque sia, la qualità del prodotto rimane alta, l’ho trovato godibile e interessante, ci si diverte imparando, ed è sempre una bella cosa.

If you're not the patient type, get frustrated easily or tend to blow through text and plot lines, this won't be the game for you. Cleopatra: Riddle of the Tomb is for those who enjoy and are used to point-and-click adventures. The tried-and-true formula is executed almost flawlessly, but there isn't any innovation to speak of. If you've got a lot of time to spend pondering puzzles, then this game has a collection of mind-benders and an interesting story that will blow the New York Times' Crossword out of the water. At just $19.99 retail, it's hard to beat this game for leisurely puzzling fun. Combine this with the fact that the game will run nicely on almost any computing rig, and you've got yourself a fun and valuable experience on your hands.

Bei den Adventures von Entwickler Kheops Studio habe ich immer den Eindruck, dass den Rätseln wesentlich mehr Beachtung geschenkt wird als der Charakter- und Storyausarbeitung. Zwar gehen die Rätsel insgesamt – trotz Schwächen bei Gameplay und Handhabung – gut und besser von der Hand als in Nostradamus - Die letzte Prophezeiung. Dennoch gehört meiner Meinung nach auch eine glaubwürdige Spielwelt zu einem guten Adventure. Diese wird in Cleopatra - Schicksal einer Königin nur ansatzweise geschaffen, so dass die rund zehnstündige Reise nach Alexandria nur für Hobby-Astrologen und Kleopatra-Fans empfehlenswert ist.

In some ways, Cleopatra: Riddle of the Tomb feels like a family-friendly, casual version of an adventure game. It’s engaging, it’s simple, and it’s short, and it has a premise that’s easy to identify with. If those are the sorts of things you look for in a game, then you might enjoy it. But when I play an adventure, I always hope for something that will challenge me, and Riddle of the Tomb didn’t do that at all, or even try, and so it’s a difficult game to recommend.

Cleopatra: Riddle of the Tomb is a clever, well polished game. What’s more, most of the puzzles are a lot of fun; fine ways to tease one’s brain. It’s too bad that a minority of frustrating and seemingly unfair conundrums taint this otherwise excellent bit of point-and-click adventuring.

Man sagt der großen Herrscherin ja ebenso große Schönheit nach. Für das Spiel zur Frau gilt das allemal. Kleopatras Reich ist wirklich hübsch, detailreich, aber auf weiten Strecken auch leblos. Die wenigen Charaktere schaffen es nicht, der alten Welt Leben einzuhauchen. Die logischen Rätsel motivieren da länger, der Spaß wird an manchen Stellen allerdings durch das unfaire Sternzeichen-System eingeschränkt. Cleopatra beweist dennoch, dass Ägypten nicht immer bunt wie in den Ankh-Spielen sein muss, um zu faszinieren.

In some ways, Cleopatra: Riddle of the Tomb proves that you don't need to reinvent the wheel. Traditional adventure games may seem awfully creaky at this late date, but there is something to be said for a new release that sticks so close to the old formula yet still manages to tell a tale that most adventurers will want to finish.

Si au premier abord, Cléopâtre : Le Destin d'une Reine semble n'être qu'une sorte de Cap Sur l'Ile au Trésor en plus difficile et dans un autre contexte, on s'aperçoit vite que c'est n'est pas le cas grâce à une fonctionnalité originale : l'influence qu'a le signe astrologique que l'on se choisit en début de partie. Selon que vous soyez Bélier, Poisson ou encore Verseau, la partie ne se déroulera pas tout à fait de la même manière. Une influence certes légère, mais agréable et qui permet de recommencer le jeu sans avoir le sentiment de vivre exactement la même aventure.

„Cleopatra – Schicksal einer Königin" darf für sich die zweifelhafte Ehre in Anspruch nehmen, eines der kürzesten Adventure aller Zeiten zu sein. Profis werden nach sechs bis sieben Stunden fertig sein, ein zweiter Durchlauf dauert folgerichtig nur noch halb so lange. Den aktuellen Ladenpreis von knapp 40 Euro halte ich daher für eine Frechheit – von einem Vollpreis-Spiel erwarte ich mehr, auch, was die Spieldauer angeht. Zwar ist ein gewisser Wiederspielwert gegeben, das reißt aber auch nicht mehr viel heraus, zumal das Spiel in einem neuerlichen Durchlauf noch an Länge verliert. Positiv daran ist, dass man „Cleopatra" auch dann spielen kann, wenn man grade nicht so viel Zeit hat; insofern würde es sich auch für casual gamers eignen. Zudem ist das Spiel durch die leichte Handhabung und den mittleren Schwierigkeitsgrad auch für Einsteiger geeignet.

Overall, Cleopatra: Riddle of the Tomb, is a decent game. It seems, however, that the developer has concentrated its effort on the game’s visual impact, even at the expense of gameplay and storytelling. Contrary to what the game title may suggest, Cleopatra makes only limited appearances in the game and her role is clearly secondary. The game is also a bit on the short side, lasting only 8-10 hours of play. Nonetheless, if you are looking for an undemanding alternative, the richly historical settings and the visually appealing graphics are worthy reasons alone to give this game a try.

So, then, we find Cleopatra: Riddle of the Tomb to be a game of mixed blessings and possible interest to adventure gamers. Its interface, setting, and graphics are nicely done, accompanied by sensible and contextual puzzles. Yet the rather dull story ends quickly without meeting any but a handful of characters. I suspect most, like me, may enjoy a playthrough of Riddle, but, as with me, the game won't make it to your "keeper" shelf.

Cleopatra Riddle of the Tomb shouldn't take too long to complete and it's up to you whether or not you want to play again to catch all the hitches - or not! It's a diverting little game but it doesn't reach any great heights. The story is very simple and serious though there is some fun to be had in meeting up with Iris and helping her out. I must confess I did crack a smile on at least one occasion when Thomas expressed his relief that the fire in the Library of Alexandria hadn't spread too far and didn't do too much damage!

If you’re in the mood for a light and unintimidating adventure to fill your ancient Egypt whim, give Cleopatra a whirl. Anyone looking for a little more substance will need to keep looking.

Sie müssen die Geduld eines Archäologen aufbringen, um die kniffligen Rätsel dieses Spiels zu lösen. Immer müssen verschlüsselte Hinweise und komplizierte Appara­turen in Einklang gebracht werden. Die Spielwelt ist schön gestaltet, aber nahezu leblos. Der orientalischen Musik gelingt es aber doch, den Spieler in die mystische Welt des al­ten Ägyptens eintauchen zu lassen – mit „befriedigendem“ Erfolg.

"Cleopatra: el destino de una reina", es la última aventura gráfica distribuida en nuestro país por Nobilis y desarrollada por Kheops Studio, compañía francesa que cuenta en su haber con juegos como Retorno a la isla misteriosa y Rumbo a la isla del tesoro, aventuras de las que "Cleopatra" toma un mismo patrón en cuanto a diseño de puzzles y sistema de inventario entre otras cosas.

Dans le genre "on ne change pas une recette qui marche", Kheops Studio continue sur sa lancée avec Cléopâtre : Le destin d'une reine, un nouveau jeu d'aventure à la première personne. Déjà responsables de Retour sur l'Ile Mystérieuse et de Cap sur l'Ile au Trésor, les développeurs conservent une fois encore leur fameux système d'inventaire de bricoleur, qui permet de monter et démonter les objets, en transposant la chose dans l'Egypte ancienne.

I would love to see Kheops step outside of the box. Let us play as the main character. That Dracula game you’re currently developing - I want to BE Dracula, not some third-rate supporting flunky. Show the same care with the dialogue as you do with the historical accuracy of the game. Let a little bit of craziness creep into your games, everything always looks so sanitized and pristine. Make us sweat a little, play with our minds. We won’t mind, heck we’ll come back for more. But if you continue to put out this homogenized, by-the-numbers pabulum, then you’re going to lose some long-time supporters.
