High Score (Apr, 1997)
Simply put, translating the classic board game to the PC theoretically allows unlimited replay of a game with forty years of proven success. Instead, Hasbro has opted for a finite number of quests while stuffing in that old time religion of full motion video. In doing so, they make a great game on a different "platform" (namely, any flat surface) into an average murder-mystery game on the PC

Computer versions of board games work best when they're direct translations of the game to the computer, board and all. Scrabble, for example, is so intensely addictive precisely because it's exactly the same as the board game, except on the computer. These board games have been popular for years for a reason - why change them?
So, it is worth persevering through these glitches? As a single-player detective game CLUE brings nothing new to the genre. And, while up to six players can hotseat, the game does not have Internet, LAN, or modem capabilities – a real shame, since an online chat feature could have added some spice to this dull game. You can huddle a bunch of friends around one computer for hotseat play, but you're better off playing the boardgame – it's a lot more fun. The game is designed to provide replay value – it has three different plots, each with four difficulty levels – but we have a feeling that if you make it through one game, you'll be too frustrated to care.
Clue is a great board game, however it is likely one of the worst PC games to disgrace the shelves. The use of full motion video is typical of the bad games when CD ROMs first appeared. Today, we expect quality movies, with good actors and entertaining writing. The break from the board game rules causing a paradigm shift to a competitive adventure game, while interesting, is poorly executed. What do we do with Clue CD ROMs after playing all the scenarios? CD frisbees? Cat toys?
