The Press Says

Given that the FPS genre is dominated by companies like id Software, Epic, and others with an established pedigree, it's a refreshing change to see a quality game like Codename: Eagle come out of a small European company. The game's few minor points are not large enough to detract too heavily from the unique nature of the game, although not everyone may appreciate the style of game play that CE has to offer. Nonetheless, Codename: Eagle presents a unique blend of puzzles, action, and strategy that sets it apart on the battlefield of FPS's. And hey, you get to be an elite British commando - and isn't that what we all really want in life?
So when it comes right down to it, I love this game but it's got some serious failings. The graphics aren't that stable and the story is kind of...well, unimportant. But the opportunity to switch from running around and shooting stuff to hopping into motorcycles, torpedo boats or Russian bombers is well worth your time. It took me a while to get used to the controls, but once I did, it was a lot of fun. The game has some very well designed missions and perfectly captures the whole cinematic, war movie feel. It's like your very own Great Escape.
PC Gameplay (Benelux)

Codename Eagle is a 3D action game in which you conduct espionage through huge outdoor environments. You start on foot, but you can commandeer any vehicle you find, from motorcycles, to tanks, to biplanes. It sounds like a great idea in theory and suggests that developer Refraction has created an evolutionary advancement of the first-person shooter. But in practice, Codename Eagle is a short, linear, and really goofy game that's much more frustrating than it is interesting.
Some ideas used here (especially the use of vehicles) might have provided a far better game. Unfortunately, publishing a half-assed product with poor graphics and lousy atmosphere blew this opportunity. I'm getting some strange flashbacks after playing this game... Mortyr anybody?

If you can find someone to play online with it might be worth a look. Otherwise this is one to avoid...
Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
Codename Eagle succeeds in putting a new spin on Russian and world history. With this tale as a backdrop it endeavors to implement many new gameplay options. It's just too bad that in trying to be new, different, and exciting it only succeeds in being drab and playing like it's unfinished. What it needed was more time to tweak the interface and AI, thereby affecting gameplay. Codename Eagle is interesting from a hypothetical historical perspective but its gameplay doesn't warrant a recommendation from this reviewer.
Computer Gaming World (CGW)
To be fair, CODENAME EAGLE does offer some interesting gameplay. There’s a really cool scoring system that monitors your progress from mission to mission, and missions do have multiple objectives with added twists like blowing a dam, or assassinating the Tsar. CODENAME EAGLE also allows you to drive vehicles and use their mounted weapons. You can even fly biplanes to engage tire enemy in dogfights. But is it enough to rescue the game from the hat of shame? Simply stated, no. Though CODENAME EAGLE does have sonic pluses, its basic interface, crappy Al, and mediocre environment hamstrings what could have been a worthwhile tactical sim.
