Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts

Company of Heroes was definitely a brilliant title, and Opposing Fronts does well in adding to it. With the ability to play two completely new forces in the war adds a whole new level of depth to the title. While newcomers to the series should definitely get acquainted with the original title before delving into the strategy of this one, Company of Heroes continues to be one of the best RTS experiences on the market to date.

Plus long, plus beau, plus fort, telle pourrait être la devise d'Opposing Fronts. L'original était déjà excellent, ce stand-alone est encore mieux puisqu'il en reprend les bases en les enrichissant de nouvelles possibilités. L'ajout d'une seconde campagne corrige le principal reproche fait à Company of Heroes et allonge la durée de vie. Bref, inutile de tergiverser plus longtemps, après cet éloge il est clair que nous tenons là une nouvelle référence des jeux de stratégie.

Zwei neue Armeen, zwei frische Kampagnen, eine leichte Aufwertung der Optik - und das Wichtigste: das unveränderte Company of Heroes-Spielgefühl! Es gibt wenig bessere Gründe, ein Spiel zu kaufen. Opposing Fronts führt Company of Heroes konsequent fort und macht eine Menge Spaß - zugreifen, Soldat!

With apologies to the Combat Mission franchise, Opposing Fronts has started to encroach on the "pure sim" functions of "dice rolling" strategy games, but wrapping it all up in good looking, frenetic action make it accessible to a much wider audience. Nevermind that this is an "expansion" -- at $40US this is a very good game.

Laat zo’n online systeem je echter niet weerhouden Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts niet te spelen, want deze uitbreiding is de drie tientjes absoluut waard. Ben je een fan van het eerste uur, dan hoor je deze uitbreiding eigenlijk al in huis te hebben. Ben je een nieuwkomer, dan is Opposing Fronts een zeer goede introductie tot het spel. Halen die hap!

Opposing Fronts is uitstekend voor snelle multiplayer battles en biedt twee gevarieerde campagnes. Echt iets voor de fans!

With multiplayer back in full force with two brand new factions to master and a pretty robust single player campaign that provides plenty of good challenges, Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts is easy to recommend to players that enjoyed the first game. Because of the complexity of the British and Panzer Elite factions, it may be a bit more difficult for first-time players to get into, which seems to go against the point of creating a stand-alone product that you're hoping new players will see and adopt. Either way, Company of Heroes is still an exhilarating experience on all fronts and Relic is showing again why they're firmly in the top tier strategy designers in the business.

Abgesehen vom Registrierungs-Mumpitz gefällt mir Opposing Fronts besser als das Hauptprogramm, zmal die frischen Fraktionen interessante neue Taktiken ermöglichen. Neben den (wenigen) Schwächen erbt das Addon vor allem die große Stärke von Company of Heroes: Die Gefechte sind spektakulär und dennoch anspruchsvoll - trotz der noch verkorksten Mehrspieler-Balance. Selbst wer mit dem Weltkriegs-Spektakel bislang nix anfangen konnte, muss Opposing Fronts für faire 30 Euro eine Chance geben.

Für meinen Geschmack hätte der Nachschub wesentlich früher anrollen dürfen, aber was soll's. Opposing Fronts ist eins zu eins wie die erste Episode ein Echtzeit-Strategie-Meisterwerk mit geradezu filmreif inszenierten Schlachten. Obwohl ich nach wie vor den Mehrspielerteil bevorzuge, macht es auch allein richtig Laune, die beste Taktik für die Armeen auszutüfteln. Als Veteran fehlt mir hier und da ein Quäntchen Herausforderung und an zwei, drei Stellen waren die Missionen nicht vollends ausgefeilt. Das merkt man spätestens, wenn man mal nicht wie angedacht vorgeht. Da konnte ich mir bei Oosterbeek Zeit lassen wie ich wollte und bog noch mit lächerlich wenigen Einheiten einen Sieg hin. Der Gegner blieb einfach passiv. Das passt zum Szenario, nimmt aber die Spannung. Schluss damit, ich will das Spiel nicht schlechtreden.

At any rate, each mission in the single-player campaign is well-structured, so players never feel bored and at the same time they'll never get distracted from their main objectives. Should players choose to detour from the main task, they'll often find a choice of secondary objectives. These may entail taking out enemy mortar emplacements or AA guns. Destroying these targets is optional, but in most cases it comes recommended if you want to avoid serious casualties. And believe me saving the lives of your infantry has its own rewards, seeing as you can always recruit these experienced soldiers in subsequent missions (another useful option). Lieutenants, captains and recruits with more experience are more effective in combat and have a better chance of survival on the battlefield. That's not saying new recruits are dumb and useless; quite the opposite. Thanks to Relic's excellent AI, units respond and act convincingly, particularly infantry units.

Opposing Fronts is a worthy successor of Company of Heroes but still this expansion is mostly targeted towards multiplayer. The new units cry out for new tactics and a playing style that's more concentrated and offensive than ever before and which make for adrenaline-pumping street fights and impressive tank battles. Technically everything is A-OK and there's nothing more for you to do than to enjoy watching screaming soldiers and exploding tanks from behind your desk.

I have no doubt that the issues with the servers and the bugs will be fixed before too long, and when it does work, it's utterly sublime. As an expansion pack, it injects a huge amount of new life into its still-brilliant predecessor and will provide a good amount of entertainment for a long time to come. If you're new to the series, you should really pick up the original first, but if you're already a dedicated fan of the game and can put up with bugs, or are willing to wait a little while, then it's a must.

The added campaigns are very average, but will no doubt be entertaining enough to satisfy the needs of offline-focused players. By all means, grab Opposing Fronts if you simply need more CoH --- just don't expect anything particularly revolutionary here.

Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts is geen revolutie zoals het originele spel dat was, maar dat hoeft ook niet. Geen enkel RTS-spel heeft tot nu toe Company of Heroes benaderd, en dat maakt Opposing Fronts een must voor de strategiefans.

Zwar ist der Zweite Weltkrieg als Spielthema langsam wirklich ausgelutscht, aber wer deshalb diesen Titel verschmäht verpasst etwas - nämlich ein wirklich tolles Spiel mit viel strategischem Tiefgang und rasanter Action. Wie bereits das Hauptspiel überzeugt auch Opposing Fronts mit gut steuerbaren und extrem wandlungsfähigen Einheiten, mit denen sich das Kampfgeschehen abwechslungsreich und dynamisch gestalten lässt. Dabei spielt es keine Rolle, welche der Kampagnen man spielt, beide machen sofort Spaß und halten sehr bald erste Herausforderungen für fast jeden Anspruch bereit. Denn Sie können sich außer den Hauptaufgaben auch noch Nebenjobs aufhalsen und sich damit den einen oder anderen virtuellen Ordenverdienen. Geübte Generäle werden zwar nicht bis an die Grenzen ihrer Fähigkeiten beansprucht, die meisten Spieler aber schon. Der Trip in die dunkle, kriegerische Vergangenheit Europas ist jedenfalls ein richtig "guter".

Opposing Fronts is a good game, an excellent game some will say, but so was the original and the only bad thing to say about Opposing Fronts is that it hasn’t built significantly enough on the framework of the original.

Opposing Fronts doesn't revolutionize the genre like its predecessor did, but at the same time, no one has really caught up with Company of Heroes yet, either. Sure, games such as Supreme Commander push the science-fiction RTS genre in cool new directions, but the World War II RTS genre has yet to learn the lessons of Company of Heroes. With Opposing Fronts, THQ and Relic keep a great thing going.

Увлекательная одиночная кампания, отличная графика и звук, проверенный временем мультиплеер — Opposing Fronts уверенно карабкалась по ступенькам, ведущим к входу в "Золотой пантеон". Проблема в том, что она слишком похожа на оригинал. Поклонники сетевых баталий будут довольны (хоть какое-то разнообразие), но в целом игра не предлагает ничего нового. Восточный фронт был бы гораздо интереснее.
