What more can I say, for a deaf gamer it's an RTS delight and it will keep you busy for many months to come. All I can say is CDV please make a data disk so we have something to look forward to as RTS' are never going to be the same again and after Cossacks, other games are going to be a big disappointment indeed. This game is the new yardstick by which all other RTS games will be measured and I suspect will fall short.

Overall, Cossacks is one of the most addicting and fun games I have ever played. Extraordinary graphics and a massive number of units and buildings are what make this game so unique, and so much better than its competitors. If you are into any type of strategy game, or are a fan of Age of Empires, Cossacks is well worth the money and will keep you entertained for many hours.
ESC Magazine (Sep 05, 2001)
The nitpicks I found are only minor shortcomings; make no mistake, this game is a winner. War gamers, RTS fans, and even simulation buffs will all find something to like in here. Early reports from Europe have stated that this game is flying off the shelf. The same will probably happen in the U.S.
Game Chronicles (May 31, 2001)
The addition of numerous scenarios and awesome graphics make this game one of the year's best. I recommend that you purchase this game and get playing online for some of the best multiplayer action to hit the RTS genre in a long time. The mix of a historical background, stunning graphics, and great gameplay make this game a must have for any RTS fan.

Cossacks: European Wars offers players familiar gameplay physics, above-average graphics, unique implementation on upgrades, and the biggest single selling point in my opinion: massive hordes of armed men running around destroying the enemy. It is for this reason that this title truly could become a classic RTS game.
Power Unlimited (Apr, 2001)

ActionTrip (Apr 20, 2001)
Frankly, I liked Cossacks more than Age Of Kings, which it resembles most. Combining two RTS sub-genres was a bull's-eye. Still, the gaming population will not accept this unanimously. Some will like the increased complexity and find all they need in this game, while others might get lost in the multitude of stats, units and options and simply give the whole thing a miss. The downsides I enumerated significantly affect playability, but the rest only shows that these programmers know what they are doing and that we should take their future projects seriously.

It’s hard to fault a great game that definitely takes inspiration from Age of Empires but changes up the formula more than enough to be a great game in its own right.

Cossacks is an excellent strategy game which is sadly somewhat marred by its overly difficult campaigns and unimpressive enemy AI. The single battle and random skirmish modes should prove entertaining for less experienced gamers though, and the campaigns will certainly challenge even real-time strategy veterans, even if they were a bit too hard at times for my tastes. But multiplayer is the real strength of the game, and is well worth a try if you have a decent internet connection and don't mind being humiliated in your first few battles by the Germans, who have had a few months head start on us with the game. You will also no doubt be entertained by such great examples of Deutschlish as "er hat getimed out" and "ich bin ein mega newbie" in the chat rooms...

GameSpy (Apr 11, 2001)
Cossacks is an excellent example of what an RTS should be, and a good playing experience overall. It's also almost exactly like Age of Empires II with a facelift and a few new perks. It fails to really innovate in any area; instead offering a few new perks and a few things that'll have you saying, "That's kind of cool!" That should not be a reason NOT to get the game, though. This is a good RTS game and should see a lot of play.
Game Watcher (Mar 25, 2004)
Overall, this is an excellent addition to the family of real time strategy games, and covers a period of great importance to history, in places that are not often mention these days, as well as the great battles of the famous wars and warriors, all in a single package. For those interested in the history of the period, GSC includes a large encyclopedia of the wars, units technologies of the era. I would very much recommend this game and system.

Gamezilla (May 22, 2001)
The most innovative aspect of the game is the formations feature. Large groups of soldiers can be controlled with considerably reduced effort and the flavor of the game is enhanced immensely. This is an age when drill emerged as a factor on the battlefield and this is accurately reflected here. Despite the omission of a scenario-building tool, this is a welcome addition to the wargame collector and the player with a desire to play a particular nation in this time period.
IGN (Apr 17, 2001)
A host of online and print previews have generally dismissed Cossacks a derivative knock-off of the Ensemble Studios real-time strategy classic. At first glance the graphics and early gameplay fully support that assertion. But closer inspection of the units, their upgrades, the undulating terrain and the overall scale of the gameplay reveal a game of impressive depth and interesting potential. But, and there's always a "but", a number of poor design decisions detract from the playability of the single player modes.

When CDV released Sudden Strike the game got loads of positive reviews since it was both fun to play and had great graphics. The only downpoint of the game was that it was not really easy for the average gamer to finish. Now, CDV has released another real-time strategy game, and it's up to you to command incredible amounts of units in several countries in the ancient times when Russia was not Communist yet.
GameStar (Germany) (Nov, 2000)
Game Over Online (Apr 23, 2001)
Is more really better? Lots of game developers seem to think so, and, intentionally or not, that seems to be the route GSC Game World took against AOK. Cossacks has more resources, more research topics, more factions, and allows more units -- and it's probably more historically accurate to boot -- but it doesn't end up being more fun, and that's the only "more" I really care about.
GameSpot (Apr 11, 2001)
Cossacks can be very entertaining. What it does, it does quite well. At the same time, it can grow dull quickly for anyone with more than a passing familiarity with other real-time strategy games, particularly the superb Age of Empires II and its expansion. Cossacks follows existing formulas too closely. Even its somewhat distinctive features, like the potentially huge number of peasants and troops you can command, don't lessen the feeling that you've already played this game in other guises many times before. Still, if you don't mind another variation on an oft-played theme, Cossacks has more than enough variety to ensure fun empire building and colorful clashes.
Gry OnLine (Oct 05, 2001)
COSSACKS at its best is absorbing, immensely fun. and breathtaking in scope. At its worst, it makes you want to pound your mouse into powder. If the game’s problems get fixed in a patch, buy it; otherwise, watch over someone else’s shoulder,
Gamekult (Apr 11, 2001)
Strategy Gaming Online (Jul 23, 2001)
In the end, Cossacks is a game that at first blush is really quite beautiful and fun to play. But after a short while, players will begin to notice deficiencies in the controls, striking imbalances in the units and technologies, and a variety of other niggling details that take the shine off the chrome. If you are a military buff who doesn't care about realism and just want to see units blasting away with muskets and cannon, or if you're an RTS fan that loves rushes and hates developing, maybe Cossacks is for you. Otherwise, seeing that my local Best Buy just put AoE2 up for $15 after rebate, you might find a better place to spend your money than Cossacks.
GameGenie (2001)
I really wanted Cossacks to be a great game, and it had potential, tarnished by poor decisions in AI and building capture. If it was necessary to battle the buildings before capture or surrender (like in Kohan), Cossacks would be all right. But, as it is, Cossacks: European War is a great attempt at another real time strategy game that falls tragically short.
