Cossacks was a superb strategy game and The Art of War expansion has done nothing to damage that fact. The sheer amount of extra features alone make this worth the asking price. For me the key feature has to be the inclusion of peace time, as an option in a random map game. I would have liked to have seen all these additions made accessible in the original game and campaigns though. As it stands Cossacks: The Art of War, although it is an expansion to the original Cossacks, feels like a separate game and those of you who upgraded to Windows XP will still be unable to enjoy the masterpiece that was the original game.

As expansions go, 'Cossacks: The Art of War' is first class, it does far more then add a few new units and situations. The improvements to game play are excellent, and the AI is probably one of the best yet seen on a tactical level. This game system is attractive and fun, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a fast paces RTS with plenty of action and challenge, to say nothing of historical flavor.

’Cossacks, the Art of War’ is an expansion of ‘Cossacks, European War’ and requires that this game be installed before you can play AoW. After reading the review myself, there was one sentence that kept on playing through my mind: ‘Speed is a sissy’. A game that is hard on ‘Easy’? Don’t let me laugh. I played Quake on ‘Hell’. OK, I got killed in the first room, but that is a different story. So I started the original Cossacks a few weeks ago. And I must admit it is not an easy game. Actually, it’s rather difficult, or, what shall I say, it is hard actually. So Speed is not a sissy. Sorry Speed…

In Cossacks: The Art of War wirkt daher alles ein wenig runder.

How I mentioned above, this add-on is not standalone, so you must have Cossacks - European Wars installed on your computer. It's quite disadvantage for those who didn't buy the original game. The add-on costs 35 bucks so I don't think they will pay two times. But for hard-core Cossacks players this add-on does a good job of expanding on the original, despite of the gameplay feels pretty much the same :) If you're a real fan of Cossacks and can't stop playing the game then you should to buy it :P

The Art of War may not make a whole new game of Cossacks, but that's not a bad thing. With The Art of War, Cossacks becomes an even better real-time strategy game for fans of the genre or the historical period. The fully featured control scheme puts many competing games' control schemes to shame, and the developer was wise to improve upon that even further. The new random map choices add a near-limitless variety of gameplay options for gamers of any skill level, and the new campaigns and missions will keep you playing even longer. All of this can be had in a low-priced $19.99 expansion, so there's no reason why an RTS fan should skip this title.

All in all, then, The Art of War is more of the same; the graphics are nicely detailed, if not inspired, the sound is okay – and the gameplay is very detailed and very long, if you enjoy it. If you liked the last one, this is a must, if you didn’t, then this won’t be changing your mind. Historians will love it…

Cossacks brought a whole lot of history into the RTS genre and managed to be pretty fun while doing it. Sure, it had its share of problems, but nothing that couldn't really be dealt with. The Art of War attempts to fix a couple of these problems in pretty easy ways by basically listening to what the fans have been clamoring about on the various boards around the Internet. It does manage to fix a few of these problems, but it seems as though those could probably have been fixed in a patch.
