Creatures 2

Anyway, Creatures 2 is here and I'm terrified. Why? Because I can't help loving my creations. Whether they're thick or clever, independent or docile, or even annoying, I care for them. I'm normally a bloke who likes beer and fags and farting, so what the blazes is going on?! The norns are taking over my life. Is that a risk you're prepared to take?

Creatures 2 is een erg gecompliceerd spel dat zo veel verschillende kanten van de wetenschap en genetica omvat, dat ik me afvraag of ik wel oud genoeg ben om 't te spelen. Heb je zin (en tijd genoeg) om virtuele wezentjes een goede opvoeding te geven, dan beveel ik je Creatures 2 van harte aan!

Creatures 2 ist eher als Experiment denn als Spiel zu verstehen. Es gibt keine Levels, sondern nur eine Mission: Suchen Sie die Maschine, um Ihre Norns mit den anderen Rassen kreuzen zu können. Für geduldige PC-Besitzer bietet das Programm aber wochenlang Raum zum Entdecken und Ausprobieren.

Det närmaste man kan komma husdjur på PC. Synd att de inte är så roliga att leka med.

Да, не спорю, перед нами — очень качественно доработанная версия первой игры, с отточенной работой систем физики, экологии и биологии, с усложненными законами и новыми возможностями, с углублениями в вопросы генетики — но глазами обыкновенного игромана ничего принципиально нового в игре нет. Сколь бы разработчики не усложняли строение норна, интереснее игра от этого не становится (ну а кроме того, к Creatures 2 прилагается конвертер, который позволяет импортировать норнов из первой части игры, что позволяет сделать вывод о не таком уж большом их отличии...) Ведь мы с вами не на генетиков обучаемся, нам в первую очередь интересен игровой процесс — и хотя Creatures и в первой версии были игрой для усидчивых, и весьма времяпожирающей игрой, усложнение существовавших принципов не есть подлинное внесение новизны в игру. В итоге, можно с грустью констатировать постигший и компанию Cyberlife синдром клонирования — и это уже к генетике отношения не имеет...

I cannot bring myself to give this game… er, I mean application… a high mark. I see Creatures 2’s potential and fully appreciate the science behind it. Maybe sometime down the road I may even try to raise a new family and tell them the tales of how their ancestor Slappy Vigoda ruled the beaches of Albia! And how she was taken from us… much too early… But I digress. The fact remains that this is not really a game… heck, it’s almost a cruel lesson. I also recognize that if you are a fan of the original you need to run, not walk, but run to the store and buy this at once. I can honestly say that the only thing that could outdo Creatures in achieving the same level of “artificial stimulation” is Creatures 2. I didn’t have much fun…but that may be due to the fact that I’m mourning a virtual loss right now.

Die simulierten Zusammenhänge sind derart komplex, die Forschungsmöglichkeiten so vielfältig und das ganze System so durchdacht, daß es nicht nur Möchtegern-Eltern, sondern auch wissenschaftlich interessierte Computerbesitzer fesselt. Leider leidet unter dieser Genauigkeit bei strenger Betrachtungsweise der Spielspaß ein wenig.

Unfortunately the payoff doesn't quite equal the effort required to reach it. Only the most dedicated virtual pet aficionados will appreciate the tedium of caring for their Creatures, and even they will find themselves flustered by the game's onerous interface. If you liked the first Creatures you will probably appreciate the modest improvements offered by this incarnation, but you still can't keep your keys on it.
