Darkest of Days does not feature any sort of multiplayer mode, but the single player campaign should take a good 8-10 hours to complete. 8monkey Labs did a lot right with Darkest of Days, and I have no qualms in recommending you check it out amongst a growingly hectic holiday game season.
Gamepyre (2009)
The premise of the game is solid with time traveling affecting the past and future a solid starting point for a game. Unfortunately, this game falls short of a great game in a number of key points. Invisible walls throughout the game limiting freedom of movement are a serious problem in this game. With games like Resident Evil and Left 4 Dead having much more understandable “walls” this game limits the player to an almost “On the rails” type of game instead of the promise of a free moving game. The graphics while outstanding in a few areas, mostly can be done on a DX9 class card and it shows. PhysX on the other hand delivers a realistic environment with smoke, gunfire and effects that make the game come alive. I would strongly suggest having an NVIDIA card if you want to play the game in its full glory as the game is totally playable with a GTX 260 and PhysX turned on.
Gameplay (Benelux) (Oct 28, 2009)
However, in my opinion, Darkest of Days is more evolutionary than revolutionary, and the whole campaign will probably not take more than ten hours for a skilled gamer. For this reason, it just narrowly misses out on my “Buy it” category.

Ach, Mensch!

Another idea gone horribly awry, there is far better out there.
Worth Playing (Sep 25, 2009)
Darkest of Days isn't a complete disaster — after all, I've played You Are Empty — but as much as I wanted to like it, it would probably need its own "Groundhog Day" to help fix what's wrong. The premise is great, the big set-piece battles are fun, but everything else is boxed within dated design concepts from which other titles have long evolved. The nice thing about evolution is that, in theory, the next iteration might be better.
Total PC Gaming (Dec, 2009)
Dreary visuals and goldfish-brained enemies rob the battles of splendour and put up an impassable barrier of ennui that prevents you from ever really engaging the conflicts, the plot or the characters. A strong concept gone to waste feels somehow considerably more disappointing than a banal concept similarly squandered, and in the end the game regrettably lives up to its name.
GameSpot (Sep 15, 2009)
But design and storytelling quirks aside, Darkest of Days deserves some credit for its plot (and its surprising conclusion), which some will embrace as reason enough to overlook the clumsy, boring gunplay and horrendous AI. Yet potential isn't enough to make a game worth playing. The gameplay never follows up on the intriguing premise, wasting its memorable final levels by forcing you to crawl through a dozen dull ones before you get to them. The ideas were there, but Darkest of Days doesn't deliver where it counts.
IGN (Sep 09, 1999)
Darkest of Days indeed. This first-person shooter from 8monkey Labs fails on nearly all fronts. A promising narrative setup is roasted over a bonfire of mangled mechanics, poor presentation, and sloppily implemented missions and objectives. The dynamics of the large scale firefights the game offers are wrecked by erratic and unbelievable enemy behavior, and the poor visuals certainly don’t help. With more development time and a more clever use of the time-traveling concept, this could have been an interesting shooter. As it is, it’s an arduous trip on which nobody should embark.
