DescriptionDCS: P-51D Mustang is a combat flight simulator for the single-seat North American Aviation P-51D fighter aircraft used in the World War II era. This simulation works as a module with the DCS: World environment which mimics a virtual battle field of land, air and naval forces online.
The P-51D cockpit is displayed as a full 3D cockpit where every button, lever and switch can be operated by the pilot. Sound is included through recordings of the P-51D named "Miss Velma". Externally, aircraft damage is simulated and animated, moving parts are also animated, and to top it various liveries are included of original P-51Ds.
The flight model is partially done with the blade element approach (like the simulator X-Plane is using). Engine properties have been modeled after the original Packard engine derived from the Rolls-Royce Merlin used in the Spitfire. Various other systems such as electrical, coolant and oil system have been modeled as well, to name a few systems. And lastly, the weapons systems typical for the P-51D: 0.50 machine gun, free fall bombs and unguided rockets. The simulator also provides for a gaming / avionics mode, that's more forgiving. Then there's radio communications between other players and wingman, and a smart AI.
Gameplay and options are as follows:
- Campaign creator (to build your own campaign mission set)
- Fast Mission
- Instant Action
- Mission Editor (for customisation, scripting, tactics, rules of engagement, and new missions)
- Missions / Campaign
The US retail version includes the Roaring Warbirds video.
