In the end, Defiance is an entertaining, intense and involving single-player experience that plays out like a science fiction movie. While offering little new, technically speaking, the solid plot, good controls and well designed levels go a long way to making the game's shortcomings seem less noticeable all in all, it amounts to more than just the sum of its parts.

Although this is not a terrible game, there's nothing here that would merit someone to really consider buying it when there are so many other 3D games of such a higher caliber in the same price range.

In the end, DEFIANCE is an adequate start for Avalon Hill's new Visceral Productions action line. Some elements, such as the story-driving voiceovers, are nice, but the lack of a map, the less-than-stellar graphics, and the save-game “feature” end up making it just another DESCENT clone.

It is time to move away from sloppily refurbished ideas, ASAP. Lifeless graphics, stock sounds, and confounding movement controls do not a blockbuster make. The creators were obviously trying hard to ride the wave of the shooter clones, but gamers are not so easily fooled. A few nice features are not enough to save a thoroughly unplayable game. In all, the only thing this game defies is the concept that a game should be fun.
