Demolition Racer

By now, most of you probably know our oft-repeated mantra, “It’s not about graphics, it’s about gameplay.” Well, I’m here to say that sometimes it is the graphics. Demolition Racer was fairly enjoyable on the PS-X, but pumping up the framerate to a solid 60 frames per second has transformed it into an unstoppable juggernaut. The high speed vehicular mayhem got my adrenaline pumping. What more could you want from a game than that?

Dat dit spel een conversie is van de Playstation versie, dat blijkt wel uit de erg povere graphics die het bezit. Kies je voor het maximum detail in het spel, dan wordt het enorm traag, zelfs op een stevige PII-450. Het lijkt erop dat je een Geforce nodig hebt om dit spel te spelen met alle visuele snufjes erop en eraan, maar zelfs dan blijven de graphics toch wel pover. Het geluid is echter wel prima en de stevige soundtrack bevat nummers van Fear Factory en Cirrus, zodat je de buren uit hun bed kan jagen met een stevige portie rock! Al bij al een aardig spel, maar niet meer dan dat!

Seit Jahren warten PC-Spieler auf einen Nachfolger von Destruction Derby. Die richtige Mischung aus Höchstgeschwindigkeit und spektakulären Unfällen wurde seitdem nicht mehr getroffen. Nun kommt ein neuer Kandidat. Bei Demolition Racer geht es um nichts anderes, als das möglichst stilvolle Zerstören von Fahrzeugen. Den gegnerischen Wagen Schaden zufügen, sehenswerte Karambolagen verursachen und gleichzeitig auch noch als erster die Ziellinie zu überqueren, ist anspruchsvoller, als man zunächst annehmen möchte.

Wenn ich jetzt mal davon absehe, dass die Spielidee gnadenlos bei Destruction Derby abgekupfert wurde, die Grafik ziemlich destruktiv geraten ist (farbarm, grob) und sich die Wagen eigentlich nur per Tastatur gut steuern lassen, dann, ja nur dann kann auch Demolition Racer noch massig Spaß machen. Ein gutklassiges Zweite-Reihe-Spiel, welches niemals auch nur den Anschein erwecken will, um Konzert der Großen mitzumischen. Die 17 zum Teil ultraharten Songs von Cirrus oder Empirion (kennt die jemand?) passen sich dem nahtlos an.

Kleinwagen aus Sonderangeboten haben meist einen Haken: die karge Ausstattung. Demolition Racer ist auch so eine Spargurke, bei der die lieblose Autografik veraltet und das Fahrverhalten abenteuerlich wirkt. Kurzfristig macht es schon Spaß, wenn sich 16 Pkw in Massenkarambolagen verknäulen. Aber die Verrechnung von Rennergebnis mit Schadensverursachung ist ein halbes Vergnügen: Dauernd wird man Erster, ohne sich für das nächste Rennen zu qualifizieren – nur weil der Crash-Score zu niedrig ist.

Oh boy – an update of a game that was on the PlayStation a year ago. I’m not sure why it has the “No Exit” tag line because, other than the prerequisite graphic enhancements, this game is almost identical to the PS-X game. With that in mind, I have to say that this game is dead on arrival. I will give it something for offering a fairly decent challenge, but this game is average in every category. Everything – from the graphics to the playcontrol – drowns this title in the sea of crappy racing games that are beginning to accumulate on the DC. To top it off, there is no personality in the game. It seems to me that the world of demolition racing would at least have some beer swillin’ yokel yelling at you. It does appear that Matt was way too nice to this game; it’s no fun.

Лично для меня самое огромное разочарование. Самый наглый пример издевательства разработчиков над геймерами. Самая большая пропасть между жизнерадостным превью и припадочным обзором.

Essentially, Demolition Racer offers a similar experience to the ancient Destruction Derby, but unfortunately is inferior in almost every aspect. The various modes offer minor variations on the theme of damaging cars, and include Demolition Racing, where the goal is to stay alive and inflict as much damage as possible on your opponents, the self-explanatory Last Man Standing, some straightforward Stock Car Racing, and a Chicken mode against oncoming traffic. There's even a Suicide mode in which the first player to destroy his car wins. It might sound great on paper, but in reality Demolition Racer is a very weak game. For rednecks only.
