Description

Derrick the Deathfin is an action game where all the visuals have been created through scanned papercraft. Derrick is a shark whose parents are captured by the M.E.A.N. corporation for their fins. He takes revenge through 32 levels, divided over four sub-continents (Americas, Asia ...) with eleven environments. Derrick is restricted in a movement plane where he can only go left and right, but there are often multiple paths through vertical exploration. The levels are set underwater, but he can also jump out of the ocean on platforms and boats, or to glide through large loops.

Levels have different objectives. In some he merely needs to reach the finish and survive by eating all types of fish and creatures. There is a large horizontal bar near the top of the screen where an indicator moves to the left at a steady rate when he gets hungry. Others are time races where the finish line needs to be reached before time runs out. There are also levels without time or food pressure where he sabotages the activities of the M.E.A.N. corporation through a short puzzle. The final level of each sub-continent has a boss that needs to be defeated.

Derrick moves left and right. Through a button or key he can eat creatures and he can also launch a dash attack. An additional action is used to gain speed and swim faster. This is for instance used to jump out of the water and reach a certain height. Pepper power-ups provide a speed boost and certain objects in the environment create a vortex that quickly allows him to eat many fish. Regular levels are usually completed from moving from one food source to another. There are also many obstacles to navigate. To unlock a next continent a certain amount of purple diamonds need to be collected and a number of M.E.A.N. tyres need to be destroyed. Tyres explode when he jumps through them as through a hoop.
