In act I player can enter a portal to ruined Tristram. There are signs of three characters from Diablo 1. Decard Cain who is alive and will help player in his quests, Griswold the blacksmith who is now possessed by evil powers and the remains of Wirt the peg-legged boy whose leg will allow player to enter the cow level.

Diablo 2 actually was adapted by D&D into a set of two rulebooks for RPG in Diablo-verse. Only two books were published... Diablerie was published in 2000, and To Hell and Back was published in 2001.
The much rumoured and non-existant secret "cow-level" from the original Diablo was actually added by Blizzard to Diablo II... To open a portal to the secret cow-level the player must finish the game, then place a Tome of Town Portal and "Wirt's Leg" (from Tristram) into the Horadric cube and transmute them. The portal will then open giving the player access. The cow-level is just a flat plain, populated by bipedal cows, which go "Moo", "Moo" in dead-pan human voices. It's actually very funny! There is also a boss in this level - "The Cow King". who looks just like all the other cows.
