Driver 3 spielt mit meinen Gefühlen wie Beethoven mit einem Klavier: wahnsinnig und doch virtuos. Jeder der dramatischen Einsätze spannt die Nerven bis zur Belastungsgrenze: ein grober Fahrfehler, ein unfair versteckter Feind, und schon droht der Neustart. Um so größer das Glücksgefühl, wenn ich es bis zur nächsten fantastischen Zwischensequenz geschafft habe.

Un peu d’histoire ne fait jamais de tort. Ainsi, à la fin du siècle dernier, sortait le premier volet d’une série appelée Driver, qui mettait en scène un policier infiltré au sein d’un gang motorisé dans une ville style Miami. Le jeu proposait différentes missions à parcourir main au volant et pied au plancher. Question carambolages et bris de vitre, les développeurs savaient y faire, puisqu’ils s’étaient fait les dents sur un jeu appelé Destruction Derby, que les archéologues conservent sans doute encore précieusement dans leur armoire. Ensuite vint Driver 2, exclusivement réservé au monde de la console, mais qui reprenait le flambeau conduite/action à pied inspiré par GTA. Le retour de la série sur PC, avec Driv3r, c’est un peu la contre-offensive de Reflections Interactive, à l’heure où les fans exultent sur GTA 4…

Als ich noch jung und knackig war, arbeitete ich für ein Playstation-Magazin. Damals durfte ich auch Driver testen. Und ich liebte es. Nach dem fraglichen Vergnügen des dritten Teils steigt Reflections für mich in die Zweite Bundesliga ab. Kein Wunder, dass Häuptling Martin Edmondson die Firma verlassen hat und sich neuen Herausforderungen widmet. Die langweiligen Fußpassagen sind so überflüssig wie ein zweiter Hintern. Ähnliches gilt für die veraltete Optik und die eintönige Gestaltung der Missionen.

Und dabei haben sich die Entwickler extra viel Zeit gelassen! Satte neun Monate hat es gedauert, bis der enttäuschenden PS2- und Xbox-Fassung die PC-Version folgte. Doch die hat bis auf eine mäßige Bonusmission wenig Neues zu bieten.

Was als GTA-Vorbild begann, fristet jetzt als misslungene Konsolenumsetzung ein trauriges Dasein. Ohne seine gelungenen Fahrmissionen wäre der dritte Teil der Driver-Reihe ein Totalausfall.

We have left-field games like Katamari Damacy, with relatively low production values but great gameplay. Then there are beautiful games like DooM 3 that many found disappointing once they dug their gamer claws in. DRIV3R manages to fall into a third category, one where the initial impression is one of hip excitement, pulp cinema, and burnished presentation. Heavyweight voice actors, an intriguing introduction, and muscle cars sweeping through hairpin turns in exotic locations--what could possibly go wrong?

There is a lot wrong with Driv3r, and that’s too bad because the seeds of a great game are buried in here.

O potencial para se tornar um dos grandes lançamentos do ano foi drenado pela falta de identidade e lançamento prematuro. O fato de sair meses depois da edição para consoles sem nenhuma grande correção é um sério agravante adicional.

The Driver franchise has the unfair reputation of being a GTA clone when it's actually focused more on simulating '70s-style car chases. However, the atrociously named DRIV3R is more a case of the developer combining amusing vehicle sequences with terrible on-foot gameplay--which has somehow become even worse in its transition to the PC.

Sous ses airs de jeu bâclé, il faut se faire une raison : le dernier volet de la série Driver rate clairement son entrée sur PC. Tous ces mois d'attente pour au final un titre encore moins bon que l'original (bugs plus nombreux, et jouabilité plus irritante), il y a de quoi être déçu.

Die Driver-Serie gehört zu den beliebtesten Spielen für die PlayStation. Auch auf dem PC konnte der erste Teil viele Fans gewinnen. Vor einigen Monaten erschien bereits die PS2-Fassung von Driv3r, das jetzt auch für alle PC-Jünger erhältlich ist. Doch wie auf der Konsole kann Atari auch auf dieser Plattform nicht überzeugen.

Nine months separate the PC release of Driver 3 from the release of its console counterparts. A sane, logical type of person might assume that the large gap between the borderline-broken console versions and the newly released PC edition was used to fix the game's serious problems. But those people would be mistaken. Driver 3 for the PC is just about as broken as it was on the Xbox and PlayStation 2 last year, and thanks to the ill-conceived introduction of a mouse and keyboard into the mix, it manages to be even worse, overall.

Driv3r is many things. As the “3” clumsily inserted into the position where the “e” should be indicates, it’s the third game in the well-known Driver series. It is also a game based on driving and shooting. And it’s a port from the consoles to the PC. That’s what Driv3r is. You might be more interested to know what Driv3r isn’t though – a good game.

The main problem with this game is that even the rare exciting and fun moments in it have been ruined by... well, by practically everything else. I assure you that I am not happy to write this, but a woman's gotta do what a woman's gotta do. And what I gotta do is tell you that this game's no fun to play at all. And it's frustrating, too, in a bad way. It's as simple as that.

The third game in the Driver series gets off to a good start. A fantastic pre-rendered cut scene introduces the story in cinematic style, with names like Mickey Rourke and Michelle Rodriguez popping up amongst the opening credits. Once again, you take on the role of Tanner, a maverick undercover cop who infiltrates a worldwide car-theft-ring. Starting out in Miami, his home city, you'll eventually make your way to Nice and Istanbul. As the music plays on, accompanying the unfolding action, you really get the feeling that this is going to be one hell of a good game.
