El Airplane is a single player, side scrolling, shareware shooter.

This game is a simple keyboard controlled scrolling shooter in which the object is to score points and attain a high score. This is a humorous take on the scrolling genre. The player flies a steam powered chariot and shoots down balloons, rocket firing toilets, insects, dinosaurs and flying castles. There are two weapons which can be upgraded by collecting power-ups. The main weapon is the basic machine gun which defaults to firing bullets but with upgrades it can fire fish, birds, boomerangs, bubbles and more. The secondary weapon defaults to torpedoes but with upgrades it can fire anvils, boots, napalm light bulbs and more.

There are six episodes in the game which can be played in any order and in three difficulty levels, each level has an end of level boss which must be defeated. Once an episode has been completed the game will automatically progress to the next. The player has three lives and health points that decrease as they take damage but which can be replenished by collecting health power-ups along the way.

The game has sound effects, music, a high score table and redefinable action key.
