Elite Warriors: Vietnam has some aspects that are well done – like the radial menu for the squad commands – but fails in terms of realistically providing AI that reacts to the evolving game conditions. This could have been a good game, but lack of a cohesive story (it just felt like mission upon mission upon mission with nothing to pull it all together) and some problems with the gameplay and AI pull it down.

PC Action

If you are looking for a great military game set during the Vietnam War then I can rattle off a list of about four great games and three good games. Unfortunately, Elite Warriors: Vietnam will not appear on any list other than war games to avoid.

Worth Playing
Elite Warriors: Vietnam is just a bad game, and unless they patch it thoroughly, I can't recommend it to anyone in good conscience. Vietnam buffs are better off spending their $20 on books on the subject, and tactical shooter fans are better off with… well, take your pick of any other tactical shooter released over the past few years.

If you're jonesing for team-based tropical shooters, you're going to have to keep on looking. Last year saw several strong action-oriented releases, and none of them broke up the action with an overhead strategic map. It doesn't look bad, and it certainly doesn't sound bad, but combat is alternately vicious or easy. There's also the matter of getting dropped into jungle mode just outside the view of your target, which typically leads to frustration as you trudge around looking for whatever it is that stopped your travel. Perhaps EW:V needed a little more time for polish.

On the occasion when everything's working, Elite Warriors: Vietnam can hold its own with the higher profile Vietnam shooters released over the last couple years. It offers an interesting strategic layer and aims for down-to-earth realism over flash. The problem is that its few good moments usually get clouded by tedium and frustration, and should be left to only the most hardcore Vietnam War shooter fans.

With insects buzzing, birds singing and tribal drums beating the soundtrack reminds me more of Africa than Vietnam. The radio chatter helps keep it real and reminds you that you're in a war and not on a safari. The guns sounds are good though they sound a little subdued. The voiceacting is too serious and monotone. Like a bad religious service. Graphically it's pretty decent but there are a lot of areas that you can't interact with thanks to invisible walls that force you to stay on your chosen path. EWV is not half bad but guess what the other half is? Not good!

Developer nFusion has carved something of a niche for itself by creating budget-priced tactical shooters. It has bucked the budget-ware trend for cheap but lousy games, and the results have been pretty good--at least until Elite Warriors: Vietnam, a sorta-kinda sequel to 2003's Line of Sight: Vietnam. Elite Warriors introduces some unusual gameplay elements that end up being completely superfluous while drastically reducing the scope and variety of the core shooting action. The game also reintroduces a few problems that nFusion seemed to have licked last time around. The result is neither especially tactical nor satisfyingly action-packed.

EWV has a few ideas that could have made the game interesting. Each mission is a “campaign” in which you can select team members, plan their routes, and set resupply points. Unfortunately, all this really means is you take part in a collection of random firefights in one generic stretch of jungle after another. EWV is supposed to be about the elite of elites. Unfortunately, if this game is any indication, the SOG soldiers were blind and deaf, and had the tactical sense of lemmings.
