In 2002 an independent coder created a couple of patches that allow you to play X-COM: em@il Games without the official server. These files can be found here.

As of May 1, 2001 Infogrames shut down the servers that handled the email transactions that took place in this game. This effectively makes the game useless for anything but collecting value. Infogrames was asked if a patch would be coming in the future that would make the now defunct servers bypassable so play could continue. They replied that it was not possible.
