Emperor: Battle for Dune is the game that Red Alert 2 should have been. Westwood has finally perfected their real time strategy approach to gaming. The same old formula is still used, but I think it's still a great game. The fantastic graphics, effective use of 3D, and gameplay adds up to a compelling title that should be on the list of any real time strategy gamer. Now, we can expect that Red Alert 2 will probably outsell this title (because of the history of the C&C series), but Emperor is the better game. Too bad most people will miss it.

This game is graphically very good. As a long-time fan of the novels (and the movie), this program brought back fond memories and expanded the Dune universe. The gameplay is not overly complex, which enables players to enjoy the worlds and cut to the heart of the RTS genre, outwitting the opposition – whether human foe or computer AI. In his novel, using the voice of Princess Irulan, Herbert wrote “God created Arrakis to train the faithful.” This game expands the faithful to embrace fans of real-time-strategy games.

All in all, Emperor is an extremely fun game setting new standards in 3D technology and good Westwood-like gameplay. They just had to put a label "Westwood Proudly Presents" on this game instead of a Red Alert 2 commercial.

Die Videosequenzen? Schlicht phantastisch. Die Storyführung? Einfach brillant.

All together, Emperor: Battle for Dune is a well designed and visually impressive real-time strategy game that promises many hours of fast-paced battles in both its single-player and multiplayer modes. It'll be especially appealing to fans of the source material that inspired the game, including the film, the novels, and Westwood's own Dune II. Fans of any of these will find that Emperor actually takes its science fiction premise much further than the original Dune II did, even if it lacks that game's innovation. That is, players expecting a brand-new revision of real-time strategy conventions won't find it in Emperor.

From Westwood Studios comes Emperor: Battle for Dune, the sequel to Dune II, the very first real-time strategy game ever developed for the PC. Based upon Frank Herbert's series of books and the movie from producer Dino De Laurentiis, Emperor: Battle for Dune is exactly what one would expect from a Westwood strategy game, in that you build your base of operations as quickly as possible and then try to wipe out the enemy with numbers. However, that doesn't mean that the game isn't fantastic. Not knowing anything about Dune, I proceeded to spend days filled with delight on this sandy planet interacting with different races from the Dune stories and battling for control of the spice, melange. If Emperor: Battle for Dune fails me in any way, it is that I need more details of the Dune universe.

Who would I recommend this game to? Westwood RTS fans will eat this up. It's the same concept of the C&C games with three races and 3D graphics. General RTS fans will probably like Emperor, as long as they can stomach the cheesy cut scenes. Avoid this game if you don't like a lot of micromanagement. You don't have a choice but to hover over offensive and defensive battles to make sure your troops aren't killing each other. Also avoid this game if you have a slow system. It's not worth playing a game at five frames per second. Diehard Blizzard fans may not like this game, but if you want a new RTS while you're waiting for War3, give this a shot (but only if you've tried Sacrifice and Ground Control already).

Do you dig the Dune story? Do you dig RTS games? If yes then this one is certainly worth a purchase. It’s solid and balanced, visually spectacular, offers a fairly easy though engaging single player campaign and skirmish mode, and is true (perhaps too true) to the common conventions of the genre. In this sense you already know what to expect. For first-time RTS players it’s a good introduction thanks to simplified unit handling and automatic resource gathering. Moronic AI, messy path finding, and some technical issues detract from an otherwise fun experience. But then there is plenty of fun leftover, which in the end is all that matters.

If I were to score games on how ambitious they were, Emperor would receive a 10. Everything about this release (with the exception of the gameplay) is superb. At least Westwood is putting its money where its mouth is and attempting to do what no one else has done. Kudos to you for that, Westwood. It’s the je ne sais quoi that got you this time. I liked this game, but I wanted to love it.

Overall, while I think Emperor is a lot of fun, Red Alert 2 offers a lot more fun for a much lower system investment. I should mention that, as beautiful as the game is, it ran pretty poorly on the minimum spec and suffered from some slight stuttering on a P600MHz with 256MB RAM and a GeForce 2. Still, it looked so good on the lowest spec, you'll be tempted to put up with the long load times and slowdown. In any case, the game is sure to please fans of the genre even if it doesn't have the same polish that a title like Red Alert 2 had. Since it's Westwood's first foray into the third dimension, we can excuse the slight lack of refinement.

When Westwood and Electonic Arts announced that they were busy with a new strategy game based on the Dune-license, alot of people were thrilled. Even more when they heard that the game would have a real 3D engine (a first time ever for Westwood) and that the game would be released in just a few months after the announcement.

Overall I enjoyed the game, though the campaign is a bit lackluster and the game doesn't offer anything new to the RTS scene. It's a polished game in its looks and simple playability, but it's also frustrating because it could have been a lot more interesting. Multiplayer's the best thing going for it and given Westwood's popularity, finding games should be easy. It would have scored higher had Westwood tried to innovate a bit more or just spent more time on the campaigns. RTS fans will want to give it a whirl, but casual fans may want to wait for something better.

In the end, it’s hard to recommend EMPEROR with much enthusiasm. While RED ALERT 2, against all expectations, made the classic real-time strategy game seem new again, EMPEROR, with all its fancy new gloss, just seems old hat. Westwood, always a glacial innovator, has long favored the “evolutionary, not revolutionary” approach to game design. Alas, EMPEROR has kicked the process into reverse, providing a rare case study of devolution in action. Hopefully, when a revamped version of the engine finds its way into the inevitable COMMAND & CONQUER 3D, it’ll go back to learning from its mistakes, rather than repeating them.

Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
Fans of the Dune novels as well as the film will appreciate the marriage of their favorite sci-fi world and this comprehensive RTS release, which effectively takes players into the depths of another universe. There's also no doubt that Emperor: Battle for Dune sets a new standard in RTS graphics, but not much else. This is not a bad game, but Westwood's real-time strategy titles are beginning to suffer the curse of Lara Croft -- they're getting old. There's nothing new here except for the gorgeous visuals. Although Westwood was leaning in the right direction, an engine makeover wasn't enough to save this title from feeling like something we've played before.
