The freshest title in the genre in years, Quake Wars draws upon a familiar and popular setting and follows though with some graphically stunning, fast-paced gameplay.

No matter how many hours you may have logged playing QUAKE, Wolfenstein, Unreal Tournament, Battlefield 2, or any of the other multiplayer shooters, nothing can prepare you for what you will experience when the Strogg invade Earth. Enemy Territory is the very definition of tactical warfare and its objective-base design and multiple classes will keep you playing longer than any other game in the genre.

As an online only game, this is dependent on two main things: Developer support and actually having enough other people to play with and against. Overall, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is one of the most polished out-of-the-box multiplayer first person shooters ever released - a testament to the usefulness of public beta testing and the "when it's done" ethos of the developers. If the level of community interaction and communication exhibited by the Splash Damage crew so far is any indication, we can expect a good deal of post release support and further additions and fine-tuning in the form of patch updates for some time to come.

The Quake angle offers enough fresh content to separate this game from the original enough that a purchase from ET fans is warranted, but at the same time it retains the same feel and balance that made ET so popular. If you loved the original ET or just want some extremely fun and addictive MP FPS fun with quite a lot of depth and detail, you simply can't go wrong with Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, it truly is a multiplayer master piece that will remain in the upper echelon of online PC shooters for many years to come. It's just uncanny how awesomely fun this game can and almost always manages to be.

I could go on and on and tell you about every little detail that’s present in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars but in the end the only thing you need to know is whether this game is fun to play and worth your money. The answer to that is plain and simple: yes! In the introduction I started with a recipe and raised the question how it tastes. Well, just imagine Quake combined with the multiplayer of Enemy Territory added with reasonable low system requirements and a whole experience/achievements system that makes you think of Xbox Live and the taste you’ll get is that of a steak béarnaise for the price of a cheeseburger.

So it comes down to whether the casual and semi-hardcore gamers are actually going to want to play Enemy Territory: Quake Wars over the many online titles that are coming out this holiday season. It definitely offers unique gameplay and with great netcode and solid small-arms and vehicle combat (including a satisfactory "feel" of player movement, weapon fire and hit feedback, something I always felt Battlefield lacked), and while many games this year will supply more impressive graphics, Quake Wars' solid frame rate and smooth play make for an excellent online experience - that is, if you and your buddies can get in together and find an even match.

PC Action

Overall, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory is definitely a game that should be recommended to fans of the genre. If you have played and enjoyed an Enemy Territory game before, you should try this newest iteration. If you haven't played Enemy Territory but you're interested in a team based, multiplayer game and are willing to invest the time to learn the game, you'll be glad you picked up this title.

If you're an Enemy Territory veteran, this is the logical next step for you. And if you've been turned off by team shooters in the past, this one may change your mind. The accessible, objective-focused gameplay won't be for everyone, especially those into the chaotic, freeform warfare of other team shooters. But all told, Quake Wars is great fun and should provide FPS fans with a lot to sink their teeth into.

The missteps that Quake Wars makes a mostly minor, but worth mentioning. Lack of integrated voicechat is asinine with the emphasis on teamwork. No matchmaking means finding a good server to play on can be a bear, and the run-and-gun gameplay sometimes feels too fast and "spammy" for the strategic metagame. Still, the game executes it's ideas well and has no glaring flaws. Whether you prefer this, Battlefield, or some other title will come down more to personal preference regarding gameplay style rather than an issue of quality one way or the other.

The formula set forth in Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory in 2003 has evolved rather well with Quake Wars, delivering a distinct gameplay experience centered around team dynamics. It may not be the prettiest game out there or feature the greatest sound effects, but the enjoyable core of gameplay helps keep things interesting as you blast through the twelve well-designed maps. The elaborate persistent statistics system only strengthens the game's already impressive replay value, as it gives you something to work towards aside from in-game objectives. It's not the kind of mass-market gameplay that's going to appeal to every FPS arena fan out there, but it's highly entertaining nonetheless.

Worth Playing
Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is a solid game, allowing for wildly varying tactics. It's got a steep learning curve, and enjoyment relies as much on having a solid team as it does on the game itself; in many ways, whether you have a very good or very bad game is entirely up to your teammates. As such, while simple pick-up games can occasionally be fun, it's definitely biased toward serious play. If you like Battlefield-style games, then you'll enjoy Quake Wars. Just don't go in expecting to immediately dominate.

On the other hand, it is far and away a deeper and more rewarding game than TF2. Team Fortress 2 is easy to access, is bursting with style, and has good performance – but its restrictive play becomes increasingly apparent as the hours stack up. Quake Wars just has too much going on to fall into a rut, not counting a couple of choke points on certain maps. It has all the characteristics of an excellent hardcore game except the performance, and that’s a shame. Hopefully upcoming patches will address this and the voice comms issue.

With the holiday release season just getting started, the gaming public will decide within a few short months if ET: QW got the balance right and did a better job than the rest of the Holiday offerings. Only time and the number of returning players will tell. While we wait for a FPS winner to be decided, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars will offer you a great time completing objectives and blasting away at the Strogg (or Human) menace until the wee hours of the morning. Just make sure your bring some human friends to the fight.

So, single-player fans need not apply - but for online players, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is a title which stacks up surprisingly well with Valve's Team Fortress 2. It can't quite match the polish, presentation and beautifully conceived design of Valve's latest, but Quake Wars sets out to provide a totally different experience, and does so very well - with a set of well-designed, expansive levels and great vehicles being the stand-out factors. It's turning out to be a great month for online FPS gamers; and Enemy Territory is definitely another fight worth finishing.

Play.tm
By offering a subtly different, more structured, experience when compared to the brash free for all offered by the likes of Team Fortress 2, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars manages to be much more than the generic 'me-too' title it could so easily have been. It's not perfect, the unbalanced nature of the maps, the spawn camping and a fairly harsh learning curve for newcomers may put off a lot of people, but for those who put the effort in to get past that there's a deeply nuanced shooter to be found.

Good Game
Well all in all it feels much less like a mod, and more like a game. Clan wars will shape up like a combination of ET and Battlefield 2, requiring small teams to practice complex maneuvers to complete objectives. I think it'll be good for competition Jung, I'm giving it 8/10 Stroggified chickens.

As it stands Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is a great game that does what it set out to do, make an engrossing squad based FPS. With all your options and the ability to strategize with your teammates for some really incredible assaults this game really does its job overtime. Nothing beats using an ATV for quick transport and having your medic, who was your gunner, heal you while your squad mates in the tank back you up. If you are expecting something with a bit more depth to it than this game has then you are looking for a real-time strategy game. As far as blending tactical combat of the likes you find in Ghost Recon games with awesome FPS on par with the best shooters have to offer, this game does it great.

I’ve had some great games of Quake Wars and there have been some enjoyably tense moments. I remember one game in particular where myself and two other players fought off a 12-man Strogg team without dying, forcing them back step by step until we reached our objective and repaired the MCP. No matter how good individual games have been though, the overall experience is still marred by some fundamental errors and though the game is fun once you get involved in it, it doesn't quite tick all the boxes.

Awesome objectives aside, we weren’t impressed with the graphics of the “Megatextured” game, which suffered from overused browns and last-gen lighting. But once we got past the superficial deficiencies, we were in for a fresh multiplayer experience worthy of the Quake name.

Game Freaks 365
Overall, though, Quake Wars is a very well-made game. Every map, team, and vehicle is perfectly balanced with the other teams, and once you know what to do, you get a great feeling of importance to your team, and a sense of responsibility that is rarely felt in first-person shooters. Of course because it is based on the tried and true Doom 3/Quake 4 engine, just the running and gunning feels right. Unfortunately, though, if you want to talk with your team mates, you will have to organize and find your own voice server. Quake Wars has no built-in voice chat feature, not even for teams. That is too bad, especially considering how useful it would have been in this context. Regardless, if you are into first person shooters with a little more to them, Quake Wars is a great game to check out.

I was initially taken aback by ETQW’s depth and complexity, and after spending many hours with the game, I’m sure I haven’t even begun to scratch its surface. But once I figured out the basics, I found my enjoyment of the game increasing with each completed scenario. Twelve maps might be perceived by some as insufficient, but once user-generated mods start to appear, the replayability factor will certainly increase. ETQW is far from perfect, but it has one thing that this kind of game really needs: the “just one more map” feeling that compels you to keep playing long after your mind tells you to stop. Hopefully, ETQW will have the legs it needs to survive long enough for currently overstimulated gamers to discover all the great things it has to offer.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is a great multiplayer game with a ton of depth: you could spend months learning all the ins and outs of all the maps, the classes on both sides, and all the weapons and vehicles. In many ways, it out-Battlefield's the Battlefield series. And yet, with a few issues like the learning curve, spawn camping and frustrating "gotcha!" deaths, we can't help wondering if maybe it's six months too late: with Team Fortress 2 here and other multiplayer heavies like Unreal Tournament 3, Call of Duty 4, Gears of War and Crysis on the way, it'll be way too easy for players to get distracted and move on to something else. With any luck, that's a fate Quake Wars will avoid.

If you’re looking for a deep, interesting shooter, where the story goes a bit beyond the map description….then this game isn’t for you. If you’re looking for something a bit more in depth than the quick fixes Unreal Tourney provides, but not quite as sluggish as Battlefield, then feel free to open up your wallet, just don’t blow the budget on it.

Team-based shooter fans will feel like they’re slipping on a familiar glove when playing ETQW, yet the rolling objectives give the game a fresh feel unique to the genre. It’s true to the Quake universe, and the Strogg are some of the nastiest bad guys yet seen in a videogame. The pace of the game is exponentially faster than most other shooters of this nature, and the presentation (other than the explosions and sound effects) is top shelf. ETQW does so many things right that it’s a tragedy the handling is so unsatisfying. Thankfully the developers are some of the most responsive in the business, so I’m holding out hope that the ice-skating handling gets tuned. If it wasn’t for this issue, I’d have no hesitation in adding another point to the score, but it’s such a crucial element to the game that it simply can’t be overlooked.

Good Game
I saw some really imaginative objectives too, like a map that was divided into 2 maps by a portal, and an area where you had to fly tiny drones through vents in order to win...that's the type of stuff that'll make this game great. I also like the fact that we got this before the states, so I'll finish with a "neiner neiner, neiner neiner!" 7.5/10 chickens from me.
