This is the sort of game that allows kids to understand why we love games from the early Ultima, Wizardry and Might & Magic series without having to look at pixilated DOSBox images. The content isn't extreme in any way - mild blood, mild language and violence. The dialogue is interesting without being complex, funny without being low-brow, and engaging throughout. Both of my boys have been loving this game (as well as Avernum 5 as I mentioned) and look forward to the next chapter!
Fantasy role-playing fans in search of an “old school” click-fest might enjoy Eschalon: Book 1, but at the risk of insulting the talented developers at Basilisk, the game-play gets a little, well, bland after a short while. While the dialogue is well-written, the clichéd story and somewhat repetitive hack-and-slash-then-rest gameplay might bore some eventually. Yes, you can try to improve your cartography or lock-picking skills and try to unlock new areas to explore, but likely only RPG fans will have the patience to sink hours into this fantasy adventure.
Eschalon Book 1 voorziet een aantal grote steden en een 10-tal dungeons die evenwel niet van verschillende levels zijn voorzien zoals we gewend zijn van de echte Old School klassiekers. Maar al bij al is dit een uitstekend begin van misschien wel een klassieke reeks in wording.
In any case, I like Eschalon: Book I. Although at times it comes across as sketchy in content, there’s a good deal to enjoy: the artwork, the low resource requirements, the relatively large, open field for gameplay. Combat is handled well, challenges increase gradually but sensibly if you go the fighter route and remain cautious in travel, and dungeons are appropriately varied. If it doesn’t require a great deal of thought, that only makes it more of a casual game than some other RPGs, the kind of thing you can pick up for a few minutes to an hour, then put away and play again a day or a week later. It isn’t compelling, urging you to see what new challenge or brilliantly devised quest lies around the next corner. But it is fun. And that means a good deal.
Despite the many warts, Eschalon is not without charm, as this game would have been an award-winning achievement in 1986 or so. Everything is done well, for that era, but, much like steam locomotives, I’m just not convinced this style really works nowadays. Players with that certain hunger for this sort of game will be satisfied, although mainstream gamers will probably find their gaming dollar better spent elsewhere.
