Super Hornet remains far from perfect. The quirky game world colours won't be to everyone's tastes and the less-than-frantic frame rate could disappoint owners of slower machines. But with characteristically brilliant flight modelling and the best virtual cockpit we've ever seen, Digital's latest still warrants a thumbs up.

As with all flight combat simulators, you are only really going to like SuperHornet if this kind of thing is your bag. There are some flight sims that manage to impress even the uninitiated, but unfortunately F/A18E SuperHornet is not one of these, thanks to a less than brilliant interface and poorly constructed training option. Despite this the game is likely to appeal to some of the more avid armchair pilots, and I'm sure it will find its niche thanks to its ultra realistic controls. On a general level it is hard to recommend, but for any hardcore flyers out there (and you know who you are), this is worth a look.

Super Hornet F/A-18E from British developer Digital Integration first appeared in UK stores last November, but it has only now become available in America. Digital Integration is a flight-sim developer with a long pedigree and has produced such simulations as F-16 Fighting Falcon and the legendary Tornado. Thus, Super Hornet F/A-18E can be expected to contain all the elements of a hard-core flight simulation, such as particular attention to the realism of the flight model, weapons modeling, and avionics. And for the most part, the game does indeed deliver on these key elements. The problem is that Super Hornet contains none of the extras that make a flight simulation a complete package, even though there's a good flight simulator at its core.

Timing may be SUPER HORNET’s worst enemy, having arrived after JANE’S F/A-18. Although definitely a solid sim, it’s somewhat eclipsed by Jane’s representation of the F/A-18E, especially regarding the carrier landings, HARM missile operation, wingmen, and bad weather. SUPER HORNET does quite a few things right, though, certainly qualifying as a hardcore simulation. But given a choice between the two, JANE’S would still have to get the nod.

Super Hornet F/A-18E is a decent flight sim that can provide mild amounts of entertainment to the hardcore flyer itching to see what it’s like to use the US Navy-sponsored training simulator. Unfortunately it doesn’t do a whole lot for everyone else, and does not possess the style and amount of content today’s flight jockeys are expecting. Without being able to build your own missions or even fly a dynamic campaign, this title feels incomplete. Its looks are a little dated, its flight model is nothing you’ve not seen somewhere else, and its combat system is hampered by an incomplete campaign system and difficult-to-use interface. Overall, you’re better off avoiding Super Hornet F/A-18E and waiting on something with a little more substance and a lot more flair.
