My initial reception to CFS 3 was one of dismay. I found the initial release to be virtually unplayable and what was playable was down right awful. Had I been spoiled by my former prop-driven Russian lover? To my mind, CFS 3 was released half-baked and run rough-shod over an already dwindling population of cyber pilots. I felt heated, uninstalled the game and returned it the next day claiming that it was too buggy to run on my box. Returning to the user driven IL-2 community, I didn’t look back…that is until Firepower landed on my doorstep.
FirePower is Shockwave Productions’ add-on for Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 3 featuring a dozen unique aircraft and more than 50 missions. CFS3 is a program that received mixed reviews. With that in mind, the add-on becomes a difficult item to review in and of itself, because anyone who disliked the original title may have a bias in the negative towards and add-on. If you are a CFS3 "hater," try to put those feelings aside, especially if you are a fan of historical military aircraft simulation. This may be among the best gaming investments you ever make.
The great visuals of MS Combat Flight Simulator 3 are supplemented extraordinarily well by the special effects packed into FirePower. Never has a sim of this nature seen such realistic ballistic effects like cannon fire and explosions in mid air. Planes will rip in half around you, and shrapnel and debris will flutter by in a way never experienced before.
The sound is also well done and will remind you immediately of something off the History Channel. Cannon fire and explosive sound effects accompany the visual effects in a way not seen in many games of this type.
FirePower is what Combat Flight Simulator 3 should have been in the first place, and it is a must-have expansion for current or potential owners of that sim.
