n fact, Flanker 2.5 is just the thing Ubi Soft and SSI needed to breathe new life into the Flanker franchise. The "sad-on" does everything right and very little wrong. Added are the MiG-29K and in-flight refueling. Enhanced are the in-cockpit graphics and audio, and improved are the editor and loading sequence. Gone is the hey-day of flight simulations, but not gone are simulation enthusiast's need for quality flight games. Flanker 2.5 meets and exceeds that need. Let's just hope that it sells wells enough to merit yet another sequel.

On the other hand, Flanker 2.0 is purely a simulation of the Su-27 Flanker aircraft. The game exudes a pride in the aircraft that is palpable even to the uninitiated gamer. Just observing the aircraft in flight, especially at high altitude with contrails streaming, is enough to evoke admiration for what the developers have achieved. Flanker fans now have a simulation that they can embrace wholeheartedly, without having to apologize for the graphics.

FiringSquad (Feb 12, 2000)
Flanker 2.0 is targeted for the hardcore audience. Does this mean that newbies to the flight sim genre can't enjoy Flanker 2.0? NO! I would only ask that any newbie to flight simulations as a whole, or the Flanker series understand that this is not a game where you can just sit down and fly around shooting down stuff like you may have done in Jane's ATF. To really make the game more than a 5 minute thrill ride, dedication and study and going to have to be a large part of the game for you. Fighting against opponents in Flanker is very challenging. Lowering the realism will help quite a bit until you feel ready to notch the realism up some. Only the most hardcore should attempt to tackle Flanker 2.0 at its highest difficulty level from the start. Even many hardcore simmers will find it a humbling experience!

A few technical issues prevent this product from overtaking Falcon 4.0 as the premier hardcore flight sim on the market today, but that’s not to say it’s set in stone. This is a very complex and sophisticated aircraft, and the simulation built around it is equally so. Equipped with a semi-dynamic single-player campaign, multiple multiplayer modes and some well needed training missions, Flanker 2.0 is a much better product than the original. In order to overtake Falcon 4.0 and compete with the mainstream sim audience, SSI needs to add an online multiplayer service that enables players to quickly find one another, they need to add a few more accessibility options to make the game easier to learn and finally fix the loading issues associated with mission beginnings.
Despite a series of well-done training missions and an instant-action mode, FLANKER 2.5 is for the intense sim fan. These aren’t point-and-shoot planes—you’ll need reading and practice to master these aircraft, and the Russian instruments and radar just make it all the more complicated. But why fly if there is no sense of accomplishment, Comrade?
Version 2.0 was eagerly awaited by the Flanker following, and beset with many frustrating delays. I avidly followed the newsgroups, which promised updates like configurable loadouts (sadly lacking in 1.5) and state of the art graphics. I snapped it up when it came out, and now I have the version 2.02 patch installed. Worthy successor to 1.5 or the best because it is now the only game in town? Let's find out.
Although there’s a beefy manual and thorough in-game tutorials, there are surprising gaps in the documentation; there’s no information on wingmen interaction, the unintuitive padlock system, or the Byzantine mechanics of playing through the campaign. It’s a difficult enough sim for hardcore players to learn, much less someone trying their first (or even second or third) flight sim. This is an uncompromising toy for grownups, and though it may be limited in scope, its insight is so thorough and its realism so unflinching that it more than makes up for its small arena, stilted campaign, and a handful of bugs. What it should have been is open to debate. But what it does do, it does tremendously.
Eurogamer.net (UK) (Nov 18, 1999)
Flanker 2.0 is certainly an evolution on the previous game, sequels generally are, but it also helps improve the quality of the genre. Novalogic and DID have always seemed to lead the field with titles like F22 Lightning 3 and EF2000, but Flanker 2.0 deservedly sits up there with its more well known brethren. That said it isn't the perfect game, and the anal attention to detail may reduce the appeal it has to the general game playing populous. For those that care about flight sims it is definitely one to check out. For those who couldn't care less, it is probably one to leave on the shop shelf.
