Flikken Game: De Achtervolging

Description

Flikken is a Flemish TV series about the life and work of a fictional police corps in Ghent, Belgium. With six seasons under its belt and a yearly "Flikkendag" where law enforcement demonstrations are given and fans can meet the actors, the series has not only become a tremendous success, but it has also polished the image and respect for local law enforcement. Flikken Game: De Achtervolging is the first game based on a Flemish TV series, and it has been developed using a 3D driving simulation engine and in cooperation with the actors and the series' production company. The gameplay combines education (driving rules, police guidelines, procedures and restrictions), and entertainment (solving tasks and crimes, free driving dynamics).

When starting the game, you choose a partner from the TV series, and that determines the type of vehicle you will be driving (BMW R850RT motorcycle, Toyota Avensis Verso or Toyota RAV4). The amount of help and mistakes allowed are influenced by one of the three possible difficulty levels. When on patrol, you are contacted by Chief of Police Nauwelaerts who provides one of the fourteen missions at random. Tasks include a car jacking, a bank robbery, joyriding, drug deals, kidnapping, hold-ups, and hit-and-runs. After finishing all missions, the end-game becomes available.

Your progress is measured in points based on your behaviour, and you lose points when you fail missions or neglect driving conduct. Stopping a car by shooting the tyres gives a better score than simply ramming it. While doing tasks, you can rely on a navigation system that consists of an intelligent compass and a map that shows the entire environment and hotspots. There are various camera options and you can add weather effects such as fog, or drive at night. While chasing a car, you can call for a helicopter and track criminals from the air.

Most of the environment has been modelled after the city Ghent. There are various famous hotspots such as de Vrijdagsmarkt, het Gravensteen, the opera, a prison, parks, churches and well-known streets. You can practice driving in the tutorial or use a free-roaming mode without missions. Regardless of which mode, traffic offenses are shown at all times and are saved in the storyboard.

Trivia

Title

Flikken used to be a derogatory Dutch word (only used in Flanders) to refer to the police, but because of the TV series, it is now commonly used to talk about the force in a friendly, amicable way.
