If you're even remotely in the market for a space exploration/action title, Freelancer will serve to delight and enrapture. The online portion alone is worth the purchase, but I'd be shocked if you didn't spend at least 50 to 60 hours on the single-player campaign. This has definitely been worth the wait.

Freelancer is one of those rare games that is complete in every aspect. The content and the technique is nearly perfect, and it molds flawlessly into a genuinely entertaining experience. While the characters are creepy to look at and missions get monotonous, Freelancer is worth every penny.

There's only one thing I like better than watching the lovely Charisma Carpenter do absolutely anything and that's flying around in space whilst blowing the hell out of anyone stupid enough to cross me. It's a niche market we aggressive, sci-fi loving space combat enthusiasts crave, but a market that nonetheless satisfies our violent and dogfight thirsting hearts when done right.

Freelancer is so close to perfection it is frightening, but the Universe could have done with more detail, be larger and the missions need to be more varied. Still, buy it and you will not be dissapointed.

What makes Freelancer a compelling game is the sense of a living universe, vast areas begging for exploration, and the ability to hook up with friends online and start being either total bastards or glorious do-gooders together. Freelancer doesn’t necessarily advance the genre or the landscape of gaming, but it presents an extremely polished revision to a languishing genre. It’s the best Chris Roberts space sim Chris Roberts didn’t actually make, and is well worth the wait after all these years.

Freelancer does not quite measure up to how it has been billed over the years of development, but delivers a solid and fun gameplay experience nonetheless. I doubt anyone will be disappointed exploring the gigantic world Digital Anvil has created.

This game is awe-inspiring in its depth and gameplay offering and is one that you won't find completing in a short space of time. With so many options of being a mercenary or trader, pirate or diplomat there is plenty to work with. In fact the only down side to this game is its depth which some gamers might find a little overwhelming. This was the problem that some complained about with Elite that you could get lost in the game for days, even months without really achieving anything. Yet this is a small price to pay for what is ultimately a great game and one worthy of taking on the Elite crown for the next couple of years. As we're 18 months into those two years, if you want to get lost again, buy X2 The Threat.

It's amazing how long PC gamers will wait for a title, but it's even more amazing when that magic release day finally arrives. At long last, PC space-shooter fans, Freelancer sits upon your gaming store shelves, and have no fear - it was worth the wait.

So you've always had dreams of being Han Solo? Flying round the universe saving beautiful women whilst making stacks of cash and out running the authorities? This could very well be the game you're looking for. A truly vast universe, many bases and planets, loads of NPC's and a very deep conspiracy just add to the fun. Strap yourself in this could get bumpy!

Freelancer doesn’t push the envelope or necessarily even raise the bar for this type of space exploration/combat game, but, in the end, I don’t think it really matters much. Players who invest in the game will certainly get their money’s worth. The game is fun, action-packed and polished to a fine sheen. Additionally, the cool multi-player element and the sheer number of missions give the game plenty of replay value.

I must say that Freelancer contains a series of simplified options, let's not call them compromises, which proves this game is for those not so mad for space-sims, for those who only now get to know it. If we consider they worked for this game for about 4 years, a massively multiplayer add-on being cancelled 2 years ago, its presence on just one CD doesn't really justify the absence of a true nonlinear gameplay, the imbalance between the economical and military aspects, the lack of some options which are considered now a standard of the genre, the low difficulty of the game due to the poor quality of the AI and the short period of time after which both modes don't offer any more challenges.

But there’s a lot of work that went into parts of the game that land with an embarrassingly loud thud. It’s a shame this work wasn’t diverted to making the dynamic universe less of a smoke-and-mirrors act and more of a truly interactive world. Because Freelancer could have been so much better with a little more work. But in the end, it serves its purpose: you’ll have a great time burning a dozen hours or so and looking forward to how many great things Digital Anvil could do in a sequel. Where do I put my money down for a pre-order?

When you are without a place to call home, and your previous job assignment is now floating rubble in space, you will likely take anything that comes along in order to feed, house and clothe yourself. Now if that job places you in harm’s way against those suspected of blowing up your last duty station, so much the better.

Flight sims usually leave me cold. I've never felt the urge to climb into a Sopwith Camel and blow away the Red Baron or splash some of Adolf's boys into the Channel during the Battle of Britain. Spaceship sims, on the other hand, have always appealed to my inner Luke Skywalker. Wing Commander, Elite, Tachyon, Tie Fighter and especially Privateer, I've played them until my eyes dried out and my butt went numb from sitting in the chair until 6 a.m.

When Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts announced that he was leaving Origin Systems, fans of his games were concerned that he had abandoned the space simulation genre. In 1999, those concerns were replaced with eager anticipation when Roberts announced that his next game, Freelancer, would be one of the most ambitious space simulations yet. But then Roberts left the project, and gradually several of its more innovative features were scaled down or dropped altogether while its target release date was constantly postponed. Freelancer has finally arrived, and while it's not the revolutionary title it initially promised to be, it delivers the exact combination of addictive and accessible gameplay that the genre has needed for a long time.

ActionTrip
So to wrap it all up, what was expected as a monumental paradigm shift in the genre of space flight games ended up as a fairly routine (albeit fun) arcade-style flyer that uses the mouse instead of the joystick, and with a pretty fun multiplayer mode. Should this game have stayed in development until something more akin to Chris's vision was achieved? The world will never know. But I do know that any game, whether it meets a certain vision or not, must be fun to stay on my hard drive. And this one isn't going anywhere for a good, long while.

It’s rare that the by nature impatient gamers have waited so long for a game. Freelancer was announced back in 1999 and after that it became quiet, very quiet. Now, 4 year later the happy moment has arrived. Freelancer is here. Wet dream of huge disappointment ? Let’s take off and find out.

Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
Even though Freelancer has not managed to reinvent the wheel, it does stand proudly amongst previous outings in the genre, once the hype is stripped away. Times have changed: players have a lower threshold for repetition and there are far more releases vying for their attention. Not even Privateer could make it in today’s market: Freelancer can. Despite its faults, and no matter how shortly it might burn, it certainly burns bright and enraptures the participant for the full duration of the experience. Those who claim to demand infinite hours of play out of each title they purchase will undoubtedly feel let down by Freelancer and its mercurial 12-14 hour campaign. To them, I say, it’s certainly worth playing through twice, a concept that seems to have been forgotten these days, even as the quest for the gaming equivalent of the everlasting-gobstopper has been joined.

That said, this is perhaps the most compelling space game I have played in quite some time, especially since the story is so well developed. In the end however, it's not enough to put it up there with the greats.

Eurogamer.net (UK)
Despite not quite living up to expectations, however, Freelancer is an enormous amount of fun to play. The game does suffer from a lack of innovation as it progresses, but the basics of the gameplay are solid and the sheer polish of the title - not to mention the interesting plotline - are enough to keep you going for many, many hours. Although somewhat flawed, Freelancer has enough charm and enjoyable gameplay to rank it as one of the best PC games in a long time, and one of the best PC space sims ever. If the online multiplayer element really takes off and is done properly, then add an extra mark on top of this verdict as well.

Play.tm
But it is missing something. There is an unmistakably hollow feel to the game which only increases as you play. It feels like its soul has been quenched. This game feels shallow where it should be a rich, deep and varied pool in which the spacer in you can wallow for weeks. Whether this was due to the departure of Roberts and other key instigators of Freelancer, or just constraints of time, but the title which for years was anticipated like the second coming of Elite has turned out to be nothing more than the equivalent of a flashy televangelist. One who is goods enough to separate you from your money and leave you feeling happy, but just cannot provide you with the answers you were searching for.

Nerikes Allehanda
