Freespace 2 is one of those flagship titles that has had no expense spared on it. There are 3 CDs full of video, dialogue, and an orchestral score. Every time you play it, you notice another little detail. But the spiffy chrome shell houses an awesome gaming engine that throws dozens of ships, some of them miles in length, onto the screen at one time. The result is a game that can be truly overwhelming, but is always a blast to play.

Freespace 2 takes what was a great game and makes it even better. A large amount of small details were added to enhance the gaming experience and it was worth the effort - this game is more refined than its predecessor in many ways. In the future, I'd like to see some new enemies with a different type of storyline put into sequels. As it stands, this is still one of the best examples of space combat out there. If you liked the first game, this title will be a wonderful addition to your collection. Bottom Line: Excellent graphics featuring 3D nebulae and bigger, meaner capital ships. A host of refinements over the previous game allow you more flexibility and control than before. Hard to believe, but this game is even better than the original Freespace.

It carried the Star Wars charm, but little more. Freespace 2 carries an adrenaline-packed storyline, spectacular graphics, great music track, and otherwise a great ambiance - making it one of the best games to come out this year.

The bottom line is that this is one great game. With Starlancer and some other exciting games coming up, it may be tempting to let this game slip by, but do not. If you are any kind of space combat game fan, don't let this one get away! You won't regret it.

Freespace 2 is a bloody good game, the best space combat sim for ages, gives you a chance every now and again but the enemy AI will keep you on your toes while the graphics & sound simply blow you away. This game simply oozes action and if that’s what you’re after then step right up and take on the world!

FreeSpace 2 is one of the best space sims ever made and is a solid candidate for game of the year.

Overall, Freespace 2 is one slick package. The quality of the graphics, sound, and control contribute to the illusion that you're really part of a large-scale stellar conflict. From beginning to end, the involving storyline and varying mission types will keep you wanting more, which is provided by the sufficient multiplayer capabilities, and the interesting SquadWar ladder system. You'll be playing Freespace 2 for quite a while.

Game Revolution
Freespace 2 is a hell of an update to an already solid space combat classic, but overall doesn't seriously add anything new or original to the genre. Still, don't be fooled by Freespace 2's intense similarity to it's predecessor - there is more to love in this game than I could write about here.

For those spoiled by the sheer originality of INDEPENDENCE WAR, FREESPACE 2 is still a very traditional, dogfighting space sim — but if you have the hardware for it, FREESPACE 2 is simply the best there is.

I fully recommend this game to anyone who likes Space Flight Sims. It has everything you could wish for, plus some extras. The replay value of the game is also there, giving you a chance to get all the medals plus letting you try at a different difficulty level. The game also has a multiplayer portion where you can play squads and attack different capital ships with bombers and fighters.

Freespace 2 is certainly one of the best space combat games out there, and fans of the original will love the enhancements this sequel offers. Ironically, it's still difficult to recommend this one over the original for newcomers to the series, since they are so closely tied together. Regardless, the emphasis on story and involving missions, combined with great visuals, audio, and exceptional control make this a top-notch game.

If you ever played the Wing Commander Series, then you will love this game. Freespace 2 was made in 1998 but playing it with my GFORCE2 card, it looked awesome. The HUD and stellar matter (nebula, planets, sun glare, etc) was the best I have ever seen.

FreeSpace 2 is an amazing experience. Combining excellent single- and multiplayer gameplay with great graphics and excellent sound effects, it seems like the culmination of years of space combat sim evolution. If you've never owned a game in the genre before but are interested in it, this is a great start. If, on the other hand, you are an experienced and hardcore space sim buff, with your own ideas of what makes a game good or bad, be prepared to have it meet your expectations and then some.

Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
When you look at computer gaming from a macro level, there are really only two types of developers -- those that innovate and those that refine. Throughout the industry's short history, a few companies have risen to the top of these categories. Id Software and Origin Systems are great examples of innovators, while entertainment veteran LucasArts has focussed more on the refinement process. Both are equally important to the growth and establishment of gaming as an entertainment medium, and although it is rare when a company is able to do both within the framework of one title, that's exactly what has happened with Volition's Freespace 2.

IGN
In a final analysis, there's no doubt that Freespace 2 is still very derivative of the games that came before it. What's different this time around is that Volition has added to the genre instead of just cloning it. If you're a fan of space combat games, you owe it to yourself to grab a copy of this game. Very highly recommended.

Ultimately, the progress of the game has little dependence on the actual player in Freespace 2. But, that's not a totally bad thing, after all, you do want to kill the bad guys and be part of massive space battles. While we're just lowly soldiers in bigger and greater things - it's damn fun all the same. I chose to entertain myself by ignoring fighters and tooling up with anti-subsystem weapons and going after capital ships. Hit them hard enough and their weapons or engines can be disabled leaving them helpless prey against the Terran-Vesudan beam weapons. Now that's co-operation! There's no better pyrotechnically-enhanced-surround-sound-Force-Feedbac-dogfighting-on-an-epic scale game, on offer. So strap in and give it a bash, afterburners!

he story is intriguing, the graphics are beautiful, the training missions are a welcome addition, the controls are solid and responsive if a little unimaginative, and the nebula battles make for a nice change of pace as well as looking drop dead gorgeous. But playing the game makes you realise just how little effect any one pilot has on a war, and how futile and dehumanising the whole thing is. I'm sure it wasn't meant to, but there you go...
