If you want a turn based galactic 4x space genre game that is made to high standards and production values, that is easily modifiable and comes with enough content to keep you coming back for more and more, then Dread Lords is the game that could be considered to have revolutionised this genre, by giving the player more freedom of control than ever before.

In the end, it's a minor point, because the core gameplay is so well done and the mechanics are so clean. Thanks to the great A.I., there's no question of the game's longevity. Because the game doesn't have copy protection or perform a CD check, you can easily install it to your laptop and home computer without violating a license. That's just the physical component of the game's ease of use and accessibility. The gameplay component of those qualities makes this the best space strategy game in over a decade.
In the end, though, the lack of multiplayer and the steep learning curve are mere quibbles when placed against the sheer joy of finally getting the best of those damned Humans (or Arceans, or Korx, or Drengin…) after they've kicked you around for a little while. Stardock took a real chance in 2003 when they released an old-school turn-based strategy game, a genre most other game companies have given up on. If that game wasn't perfect, it can be seen in retrospect as a necessary stepping stone to the gameplay wonder that's currently running on my desktop computer. Master of Orion is dead. Long live Galactic Civilizations II!
Great games are always more than the sum of their feature sets, and Galactic Civilizations II is a great game. Galactic Civilizations II does indeed boast a very impressive list of cool features, but it also has that extra "something" that separates pretty good games from Hall of Fame material. In the case of Galactic Civilizations II, an epic space strategy game set in space, that extra element is a design that is clearly focused on catering to the desires of the player, rather than on trying to stuff the designer's preferences down your throat. From installation to end game, it is clear that this is not only one of the best turn-based strategy games to grace a PC, but one in which the player is treated like royalty.

Firaxis really raised the bar for other 4x developers with last year's Civilization IV. Galactic Civilizations II actually manages to rise to the challenge. Some of the underlying concepts (technology in particular) aren't quite as intuitive as they ought to be but the game is full of personality and offers up hour after hour of strategic satisfaction. The AI in particular is one of the high points of the game, providing an experience that's as unpredictable and challenging as just about any we've seen in games of this type.

As you can probably tell, I really could go on all day about this game as it rewards so much the more you play. What strikes me is how deep and complex it is, while still retaining a very user-friendly approach and play style. I started expecting nothing but was rewarded with a complete and well-crafted game, clearly Stardock has put a lot love and effort into this. With good site support and the developers listening to feedback from gamers for content patches, the future looks stellar (sorry) for this series of games. In short, fun, polished and able to be enjoyed on any level. This is certainly my personal benchmark for the genre at the moment.
To summarize, Galactic Civilizations 2 is an impressive game that contains plenty of content and inventive turn-based gameplay mechanics; however it suffers from an extremely steep learning curve for beginners, and lacks a captivating single player campaign. Galactic Civilization 2 is definitely worth, though its long-term appeal falls a little short.

You sense that this is going to be some people's game of the year. Hell, with the amount of actual game here, it's possible that could be in a purely literal sense: in that they won't bother playing anything else because this will happily occupy all the time you care to throw at it. If you're prepared to wrestle with the occasionally unfriendly interface and figure out the unintuitive systems, there's every chance you'll be one of them. Conversely, if you aren't... well, it's unlikely you'll be even reading this review; instead you'll be sitting on the news pages and desperately refreshing news about the latest update to Princess Pooble racing.

If you are into strategy games then Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords is right up your alley. Vast customization and randomization features ensure that you’re not going to get the same game twice. It is the definition of value in gaming as far as I’m concerned even if you’re not completely sold on the genre.

As with any game in the genre, this comes with endless possible hours of gameplay with its multiple difficulties, a random map generator, and almost infinite ways for a game to play out. In all, Galactic Civilizations II is worth a play for any genre enthusiast, and exactly what stranded Master of Orion fans have been waiting for.

The intricate interplay of economics, military development, trade, and keeping your citizens happy is handled marvelously, and patient players can be well rewarded for their time. As for this patient player, I felt that particular virtue a tad bit strained.
Quel dommage !
