Gothic is a 3D Action-Role-Playing Game, similar in gameplay and presentation to Origin's Ultima IX: Ascension.

Orcish Hordes are invading human territory. Therefore the king needs a lot of ore to forge enough weapons for his army to stand against this threat. Prisoners from all over the empire are imprisoned in a large magical sphere where they have to work in the mines for the king. Your character is one of these prisoners. Thrown into the hostile area inside the magical barrier, he has to survive in battles against dangerous creatures, join one of the prisoner camps, and ultimately escape from the prison.

Gothic combines real-time, action-based combat with RPG character development. You gain experience points for defeating enemies and completing quests. Those points can be distributed to raise your combat parameters. You can become a melee fighter, an archer, a magic user, or a combination of these character classes.
