If you run to any of the guards, you can ask them to join as a backup.

Watch out for your fella scientists, as you may need some of them alive.

No matter how fast you climb, time for this scientist is counted.

Surface, at last! Wait! Why are those soldiers against me? Something here stinks heavily!

Coming out of a hatch just to see an aircraft and many soldiers awaiting on these rocks.

If you run to empty tank, or unoccupied cannon, use it by all means. As a matter of fact, sometimes it's necessary to do that.

Final confrontation is on an alien planet, with no military whatsoever.
