Game Chronicles
All in all, I found Hard to Be a God very intriguing with its deep story and several plot twists. The story leaves you in the dark start off the bat and slowly reveals the intricate details. The nicely designed environments are pleasant and the music is quite nice. If you are looking for a different change of pace, then I recommend picking up Hard to Be a God.
I stand by my prior assessment of Hard to be a God; it's easy to pick up and play, it has the most absorbing and genuinely interesting narrative I've seen in an RPG for ages, there are so many quests to discover that it will give even the most hardcore completist many hours of play and it's rare to see an RPG that doesn't rely solely on grinding for experience. It doesn't have the greatest graphics in the world, the sound really needed more attention before release and the combat system can feel a little unwieldy at times, yet, looking back, perhaps it's not such a disappointment after all! If you're a fan of the genre then give it a go and discover just how hard it actually is to be a God.

The game is a bit of a mixed bag – old-style graphics, minimalist sound but with an engaging story. You actually have to invest some time in it to start benefiting from the tale here, but there are a lot of side quests to keep you distracted. The developers did a nice job with making the world feel like a sand box through the side quests and such, giving the game a more robust feel.

The true strength of the game is the storyline, which is pretty amazing. Perhaps it’s not as hard hitting as the book itself, but you will be drawn in by the story and will want to continue playing for hours on end to see what happens next. There are even several twists and turns that I don’t think you will see coming, and lots of moments when it will be difficult to figure out who you should trust given that the Earthmen are used to lying to keep their secrets, and everyone else seems to lie simply to advance their own agendas. You will even become a true medieval lord at one point, which means more responsibilities and problems as you defend your land and your peasants.
„Hard to be a God“ kann man nicht mit „Two Worlds“ vergleichen, da sind fast Welten dazwischen.

Everything else is standard fare and you won’t see anything here that hasn’t appeared in a number of other titles. But if you are looking for a gentle, non-taxing RPG to while away a few hours – one that won’t stretch the old graphics card too much either – you could do a lot worse than Hard to be a God.
Hard to be a God shattered all of my initial preconceptions about it, just not in a good way. There is a fair amount of fun to be found here, especially if story is important to you. But it's not a game that will go down in history. True, the narrative is good enough to be a book, but the gameplay is forgettable. There's really no compelling reason that this game wouldn't simply be a more enjoyable experience if it was a book instead.

It's hard to see a game like Hard to be a God. On one hand, it has one of the better stories I've seen in a game; on the other, it has some of the most mundane and aggravating gameplay. If you're a stickler for stories and have an iron gaming stomach, give Hard to be a God a shot, because if you can get past the outer crust you'll find a sweet nectar inside of it. For many normal gamers, though, the story isn't enough of a pay-off for all the time spent frustratingly hacking and slashing your way through the world.

We respect that Akella are a smaller studio, but a better effort needs to be made if they wish to succeed. They haven’t made a bad game, but simply one which falls into convention and makes no effort to shout ‘look at me.’ Instead Hard to be a God huddles up in its comfort zone. The game is easily playable and technically stable but could have been improved with an extra couple months of polish or better planning.

„Hard to be a God“ glänzt mit einer aufwendig und farbenfroh gestalteten Spielwelt.

Hard to be a God is ultimately hard to like. The story is a compelling piece that will drag most bookworms through the many gameplay obstacles, if only to find out what happens at the end, and truth be told it really is worth the wait. Problem is, you could just go and buy the novel and save having the experience marred by a disappointing effort of a game. After several months of playing I suddenly realised that I was trying so hard to like the game, when in reality it should be the game trying hard to please the player; and that just doesn’t happen here.
Malheureusement, Hard to Be a God n'a rien de tout ça.
Hooked Gamers
This is a difficult one. If I had not played some excellent RPGs in the past, Hard to be a God would definitely be an entertaining game. But now, having been spoiled by many games, gamers have learned to expect more from new RPGs and there Hard to be a God simply doesn't deliver. My first feeling about the game was that I had been transported back in time to the 90's but with better visuals and I must say that this feeling still remains. Modern RPG players expect MORE free-roaming, non-linear and open-ended game design from their games than Hard to be a God can provide.

Between the obvious chinks in the artificial intelligence and glaring clipping anomalies (with characters walking through walls and floating down staircases), only a truly hardy adventurer will persevere. Did I say hardy? I meant foolhardy.
