Heroes Chronicles: Warlords of the Wastelands

Wer Heroes of Might and Magic 3 schon sein Eigen nennt, der kann sich das Geld für diese neuen Kampagnen getrost sparen. Schade, was 3DO mit den Chronicles jetzt aus dieser fantastischen Reihe macht: Der treue Fan soll geschröpft werden. Kein Zweifel, die Geschichte um Held Tarnum ist superspannend und der Suchtfaktor so hoch wie beim Hauptprogramm. Doch für so wenig auch noch jeweils 50 Mark zu verlangen ist unverschämt.

It’s not that Heroes Chronicles: Warlords of the Wasteland isn’t entertaining. It’s that it’s just too short. Pick up a copy of Heroes III: Complete instead, which has unlimited replayability, unless you’re a complete fan of the series and need every title. If you’re a newcomer, it may be right up your alley as well, but veterans of the Heroes titles need not apply.

Nun gut, ich persönlich habe weder den Editor noch die Mehrspieler-Option von Heroes jemals wirklich genutzt, insofern stört es mich auch nicht sonderlich, wenn beides in den Chronicles nicht enthalten ist. Aber das inhaltlich Gebotene (nämlich je eine schnöde Kampagne mit acht Missionen) ist angesichts des geforderten Preises im gehobenen Mittel-Segment doch arg wenig! Keine Solo-Maps, kein gar nix! Nee, das kann nun wirklich nur als Beutelschneiderei bezeichnet werden, auch wenn das Spiel an sich natürlich nach wie vor sehr empfehlenswert ist.

If this product has a failing point, it has to be the graphical elements. But then again, this program is built so that just about anyone with a Pentium computer can play it. The minimum system requirements only ask for a Pentium 133 processor and 32 megs of RAM – both very low. That makes this an accessible adventure for anyone. And while it is, technically, an add-on to the Heroes of Might and Magic III series of games, it does stand alone just fine.

Besides, if you haven't already gotten into Heroes of Might and Magic, then you might as well keep waiting - 3DO's publishing track record suggests that all of the Heroes Chronicles games will eventually be published together at a discount. As such, Warlords of the Wasteland is actually best for those who're already avid fans of Heroes of Might and Magic - these players will most enjoy guiding Tarnum through his first adventure and through subsequent Heroes Chronicles games.

In the end, I wish that New World and 3DO had included a little more value into Warlords of the Wasteland. I like their approach to make the game a bit easier for new players to approach, and the more tightly knit, story-driven scenarios are welcome too. It's just a little too light on the amount of gameplay included to recommend to veteran HOMM fans.

Warlords of the Wasteland comes with a budget price tag of $20. Of course, this is only the first in the series, so if you wish to partake in the rest of Tarnum's adventures, it'll cost you $80 in total. That's 32 scenarios in all, which doesn't quite add up in the end considering you could create this kind of package using the Heroes of Might and Magic scenario editor. Heroes Chronicles plays out like a series of short stories, but that doesn't mean you can't introduce new elements to the mix. It's because of this, that I can't recommend Heroes Chronicles to fans of Heroes of Might & Magic. Even if you're new to the series, you're better off picking up Heroes of Might and Magic III, or one of it's expansion packs, rather than this shady product.

On a beau être fan de toute la saga des Heroes Of Might & Magic, les gars de chez New World Computing et 3DO seront plutôt difficiles à suivre sur la saga Heroes Chronicles. En effet, bien trop peu de nouveautés s'ajoutent au dernier (et excellent) Heroes Of Might & Magic III. La durée de vie est en chute libre avec seulement 8 scénarios dans un paysage identique aux cartes précédentes et les trois/quatre unités supplémentaires (pas de multijoueurs non plus), font que même à 150 Frs, c'en est trop. Dans l'absolu, seul le débutant qui n'a jamais essayé un quelconque épisode de cette mythique série pourra y trouver un moyen de se faire une idée...

I wonder why "New World Computing" decided to ruin one of the best game series ever with such a lousy product. This is the first game that absolutely relies on its predecessor's engine. Each add-on until now brought new maps, items, heroes and campaigns, and HC brings absolutely nothing. The story is interesting, and yet insufficient to provide the enjoyment like any of the older HoMM.

Нас не обманули!! Тссс-с! Всем фанатам, уже пощупавшим игру и после прочтения первого предложения решившим закидать меня тухлыми помидорами! Я вам говорю — нас НЕ обманули. Ведь что главное в искусстве public relations? Главное — не врать. Можно не договаривать, а все, что договорили, раскрашивать в такие яркие краски, что “Куда приводят мечтам” и не снилось. 3DO сделала все, что обещала в своих конгениальных пресс-релизах. Ни больше, ни меньше. Тютелька в тютельку, как недавно Blizzard со своим Diablo 2. Помните, что потом говорили фанаты D2 тем, кто от него плевался — “они ведь ЭТО и обещали!”. История повторилась, но уже чуток с другого краю. 3DO в своей некогда независимой, а теперь вполне внутренней команде New World Computing в рекордно сжатые сроки на движке Heroes 3 (есессно, усов. и проапгр. до Shadow of Death) сваяла нечто, что теперь впаривает казуалам, которые “чиста не въехали” в обычных Героев, под, так сказать, соусом знаменитой серии.
