DescriptionHospital Tycoon is a level-based hospital management simulation where players can start on an empty building, and then assemble rooms with all kinds of material, from desks and file cabinets for the general diagnosis to the expensive ultra-scanners and x-rays to diagnose such bizarre diseases such as chimpanzeesis or stressozombieac, and treat them with more or less bizarre machines like a normal hand pump. There several additional rooms, such as a staff room for your employees to rest, a toilet so that patients don't have to relieve themselves in the corridors, a research department to get the most advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies and a training room where consultants can teach a thing or two to rookies, making them capable doctors. The size and layout of each room can not be freely chosed but instead you've access to different room layouts like a 4x8 or a 12x12 to the available space. These rooms also come with a changing cubicle and a desk with a computer. Whatever additional medical item you place inside that room, defines it's function. So if you place a operation-table into it, it will automatically become a surgery. In addition to rooms, the player must provide seating for patients, vendor machines and generally a nice environment.
However, rooms don't run by themselves. Most diagnostic and clinics can work with regular doctors, but others like the research room or the medical treatment require specialized staff like a scientist or a pharmacist. Of course you also need many nurses. At the same time, the hospital can't run without handymen cruising around the hospital to water up dry plants, clean up litter and vomit (after all, people go there because they are sick) and fix machines, while receptionists direct patients to the proper rooms.
The heart of the game are three series with four levels each. The first series is the tutorial of the game but it already tells a soap-like story where nurses fall victim to handsome doctors and so on. Since every staff member is a different character with different attributes in the several stats like reliability or sociability you can control the outcome to a certain degree. But these attributes are also important because they influence the productivity of the staff member. A doctor who has already worked two shifts might not recognize a simple headache anymore for example. Over time they also gain experience at what they do automatically and can make faster the right diagnose for example which is essential for the survival of your patients because they lose constantly health while being in your hospital until you cure them.
An additional feature of the game is the first person-mode. You can select any person in your hospital and then follow her path through the hospital experiencing hands on when the doctor sticks you in the x-ray machine or when the pharmacist gives you your cure the hard way.

ReleasePrior to the release of the game, following a management buy-out, developer Deep Red Games Ltd. changed its name to DR Games, along with a lot of internal changes. Although the studio was still operational, publisher Codemasters announced in June 2007 on their forum that there were no plans for a patch or upgrade: "If an issue or bug is discovered in the game that affects a lot of users we will address this and if this needs a patch to resolve the issue then we will create one. There will be no updates that change the current design or features of the game, however." It sparked a lot of comments from disgruntled customers who would have liked some design changes.
