Jane's Combat Simulations: F-15

No flight sim is perfect, and this one is no exception. Perhaps because it tries to do so much, the game contains numerous minor flaws, ranging from esoteric technical errors and niggling graphical glitches to infrequent game crashes on some systems. Despite these annoyances—most of which will go unnoticed by the majority of garners—Jane’s F-15 clearly excels in many areas that contribute most to an immersive gameplay experience. If you can overlook its shortcomings, you may judge it to be one of the best air combat sims ever made.

The Jane's Combat Simulations line leaps from peak to peak, with nary a bum title in the bunch. ATF, Longbow, Longbow 2, 688, and now F-15 have secured the company a place as the pre-preeminent developer of simulation software. Following hot on the heels of Longbow 2, F-15 is, if possible, an even more impressive piece of work. By taking on the sadly neglected F-15E Strike Eagle, it fills a crucial gap in the air combat realm.

There is so much to like about Jane’s F-15 that it would be tough to point them all out. On the other hand there are some things that will shy certain people away from this simulation. Even though there are some shortcomings in the multiplayer options and some bugs that pop up here and there, Jane’s F-15 brings a new level of realism to the PC. This is definitely a title for the hard-core flight simulation fans. I found it extremely challenging to learn the advanced controls of the plane, but also found it entertaining to learn the ins and outs of truly flying this great war machine. If you were to compare it to other games in its genre you might find things that you do not like about it, but you will also find that it has extreme depth and textbook flight models to bring a high degree of realism to the PC. When sitting down to play this title, you need to realize it is not an arcade title.

Unterm Strich bleibt nur zu sagen, daß F-15 momentan die beste militärische Jetsimulation weit und breit ist. Wer sich auch nur halbwegs für das Genre interessiert und die Zeit zur Einarbeitung mitbringt, sollte sich F-15 nicht entgehen lassen.

F-15 is een aanrader te midden van andere aanraders die zich onderscheidt door z'n enorm realistische aanpak maar die dankzij een grondig lessenpakket niet alleen voor ervaren flightsimfanaten is weggelegd.

Jane's F-15 verfügt über geradezu vorbildliche Realitätsnähe. Das damit verbundene Missionsdesign und der daraus resultierende Schwierigkeitsgrad sorgen jedoch dafür, daß sich das Programm kaum noch als "Spiel" bezeichnen läßt. Selbst wenn man bei Konkurrenzprodukten sämtliche Realitätsoptionen einschaltet, um ein vergleichbares Niveau zu erzielen, bieten diese im allgemeinen mehr Spielspaß – weniger wirklichkeitsgetreue Missionen bieten einfach mehr Abwechslung. Die technische Perfektion wird bei Piloten der Luftwaffe für mehr Freude sorgen als bei durchschnittlich talentierten Simulationsanwendern, die vor allem schießen und treffen wollen.

Nach dem hervorragenden Longbow 2 hatte ich auf einen Referenztitel bei den Jet-Sims gehofft, aber statt dessen "nur" ein gutes Programm erhalten. Wollen Sie im Realismus auf "Experte" umschalten, sollten Sie dies auch bei der Steuerung tun, da ansonsten benötigte Radarmodi nicht funktionieren. Weiterhin könnte die Grafik mit den groben Explosionen und geringen Sichtradius hübscher sein. Und den Kampagnen täte etwas mehr Dynamik gut.

Mein Stahlvolgel gleitet durch die Nacht, mein Gesicht blaß erhellt vom grünen Leuchten des HUD. Unter mir nichts als Sand, keine Dünen, keine Siedlung. Kurz vor dem vierten Wegpunkt gehe ich zum Zielanflug über. Ein kurzer Klick auf den Feuerknopf genügt, und die Raffinerie ist Geschichte. Warum liegen Krisengebieter immer in Wüsten oder kargen Bergregionen? Bis auf ein, zwei Hügel und ein paar Fabriken ist die Landschaft von F-15 arg detailarm. Auch die Aufträge sind nur Standard: Keine Story hält die Missionen zusammen, es kommt nie zu überraschenden Wendungen oder Interaktionen mit verbündeten Truppen. F-15 ist zwar ein grundsolider, sehr realistischer Flugsimulator, bietet aber leider nichts Neues.
