There are some minor setbacks in Joint Operations worth mentioning. Handling an auto can be trying at times?you can go through trees, and four wheelin? doesn?t always work through rice paddies. And the sporadic lag, even on decently high-running machines, can be bothersome, especially when there?s a lot going on in one specific area or when you?re trying to aim at targets from long distances. All of the positives, however, certainly overshadow these negatives. If you?re even remotely interested in funning around with large groups of like-minded soldiers, then Joint Operations certainly tops the ranks.

One point that's important to remember is that, like anything multiplayer, a game of Joint Operations is often as good as its teams. There will be times when you're playing with a bunch of morons on your side and nothing you do seems to matter. Odds are, the other team isn't having that much fun, either. But when you get two equitable teams playing (something helped by the fact that players are randomly assigned to a side when they join a server), Joint Operations is really a fantastic piece of work and easily holds its own alongside Unreal Tournament 2004, Battlefield Vietnam, and Planetside. The bad news for Novalogic is that it no longer has the luxury of low expectations.

Any military FPS fan will absolutely love this game. The graphics and sound are top notch, and the multiplayer experience is second to none. For a MSRP of 40 bucks and no subscription fee, any fan of the genre will consider this a must have and well worth the money. I know I do!

NovaLogic put a lot of work into this title and it’s paid off. On the back of Typhoon Rising’s package it reads “Don’t re-live history, Make it!” NovaLogic has certainly done that with this game. Creative, very well put together, and a lot of fun to play, if NovaLogic continues to maintain and update it well, Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising is sure to be a hit with players for a long time to come.

The only real issues with Joint Ops, besides its somewhat dated look, are intrinsic to the hugeness of the title. Sometimes, if your team is staffed with morons who don’t form up into fire teams and fill up the vehicles, it can really bite to run across the enormous maps. Likewise, if a server isn’t somewhat close to capacity, the massive levels can feel as empty as the Moon. Also, with the way that the Advance and Secure gametype is set up, matches can go on a bit too long since it’s so hard to finish off the other team. But once you find a good server to play on (which I didn’t have any problems at all doing), it’s awfully hard to tear yourself away from the screen.

Game Over Online
The quality of your JO experience very strongly depends on the online crowd you find. It possesses essentially no single player game at all, just a handful of tutorials that you’re not going to play for more than 15 minutes. If you can find yourself an online crowd that works and plays together well, survive long enough to get a feeling for the weapons and vehicles, I think this game has a lot to offer, but many people will be turned off by the spawn campers, the simple ballistics, and the extreme ease of dying.

And while the term "great war" may a bit of an oxymoron, Novalogic's massive first-person shooter Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising is indeed a great game. Though the experience is hampered a bit by a few small but substantial issues (specifically, some nasty bugs and no single-player), this is about as good as online military warfare gets.

With that said, Joint Operations is already a great game with still more potential for improvement. When it really gets going, it's an exhilarating game of modern combat, albeit one that's also weighed down with some bugs and gameplay issues. For what it's worth, the same was true of Battlefield 1942 when it shipped, though that game's growing pains seem long forgotten by now. One can only hope that NovaLogic will follow suit by tweaking Joint Ops closer toward perfection.

It truly is an excellent game that holds up well in spite of its flaws. The huge number of players supported and refined vehicle control make for tense firefights and fearsome large-scale battles ' even if the lack of focused combat, resulting from tepid vehicular combat and sprawling maps, keeps it from taking over Battlefield's lead. Still, it is friendlier for newer players while still holding plenty to offer for those experienced in team-based shooters.

The numerous vehicle options are all pretty cool, but they end up being used mostly for transport and not assault, simply because it’s so easy to blow them to hell with a well placed rocket or mine. Consequently, you’ll find yourself either walking a lot or dying a lot. And then you’ll respawn back where you started, and get to start walking again – kind of a pain. This frustration is balanced against an absorbing involvement in the borderline epic conflicts you’ll be fighting in, which should keep multiplayer fraggers coming back for more again and again.

Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising is a decent to great game that unfortunately is too much of a clone of battlefield 1942. That being said, it offers a large enjoyable environment and has great battles. While it is way too easy to die in the game, it is still varied enough to be one of the top multiplayer games out there.

Novalogic has always been known for its military games. While Comanche has been, arguably, the most popular franchise, the Delta Force series has been going strong for almost six years now, recently morphing into the Black Hawk Down license and combining the Comanche flight engine. In theory, it's the best of both worlds, but multiplayer proved to be the big appeal, as single player suffered from poor AI and some frustrating design decisions. Large maps, constant action, and objective-based gameplay with dozens of other gun-toters was pretty nice. Yet even multiplayer had one niggle: no controllable vehicles. This was supposed to debut in the expansion pack, Team Sabre, but was pulled late in development, causing many to wonder when Nova would eventually implement the feature in one of their games. Well, that day has finally come, and this time the action is totally multiplayer, aside from the requisite offline training missions.

Overall the game is very solid. It is probably the most complete war game to date. When you look at the other options, as complete, Battlefield 1942 may be about the only competitor. The complete package is a good look at war. The 150 multiplayer games are incredible given your team is experienced and knows how to use teamwork. The game does not include a single player mode, however, so all of the resources are being poured into the multiplayer game. This is a good thing though, because this means Novalogic will work to fix the multiplayer bugs rather than random bugs in a single player version. There are some glaring bugs that are seen by many people. Some games are even struggling to connect due to errors, however, if your machine runs this game, it is simply an amazing game. It is a must own for anyone that enjoys military games.

Overall, Joint Operations isn't quite as much fun as it should be. It has all the elements in place to be exceptional, but there are just too many little niggles - it somehow contrives to be less than the sum of its parts.
