Whether you're driven by Riven, or pissed at Myst, Legacy of Time is a premiere delicacy served to adventure gamers on a glistening silver tray by a prolific team of master chefs. Bon Appetit. Oh, and that fatal flaw that was mentioned earlier? Just try to feel as immersed by any adventure game after being absorbed into Legacy of Time. It'll be a long time before you feel this entertained again.

While playing Riven made me feel like I was reading an interactive book, playing Legacy of Time makes me feel like I am watching an interactive movie. Although there is nothing truly innovative about the plot here, everything is done well, and you have a feeling of real accomplishment when you make it to the end of the game. Red Orb has done well in this game to carry on its superior tradition in this particular gaming niche.

The third Journeyman Project will not disappoint. Fans have come to expect a kind of special quality from the series, and this latest installment is worthy of the name. Solid gameplay and beautiful renderings are your ever faithful companions in the world of JP3, and some truly ear-gripping sound helps flesh out the world. A few weaknesses of recurrent tasks and puzzle types are the only flaws, and they are quite rare, anyway. The feeling of being a Temporal Detective is a satisfying one, and I recommend this title heartily, especially to die-hard fans of the adventure genre. Take Father Time himself by the beard, and save humankind by manipulating the strands. It’s all up to you now.

In the original game The Journeyman Project, you prevent a mad scientist from disrupting Earth’s invitation to join the Symbiotry of Peaceful Beings. In the sequel The Journeyman Project 2: Buried in Time you foil an attempt by a rogue temporal agent to frame you for tampering with time but lose her during your chase in the time stream. Now, in The Journeyman Project 3: Legacy of Time, you travel back in time to catch the same rogue agent but, in the process, discover a larger plot that connects the entire trilogy and forces you to view all your past experiences in a completely different light.

Game Design 101 pop quiz, class! When you're the developer of two successful installments of an adventure trilogy, you make the third game:
A) a carbon copy of the existing template (the "don't mess with success" model)
B) a slightly modified and polished version of the first two games (the "tune-up as needed, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it" model)
C) a significant redesign that pushes the series in a new but risky direction (the “Journeyman Project 3" model)

PC Action

This game would actually get a better review from me if it was a standalone title. However, the cold hard fact is that it is haunted by the ghost of its brilliant predecessor, JP2: Buried in Time. As good and good-looking as JP3 is, it is in no way a superior game to the second in the series. It's much shorter and easier. JP2 was one of the richest, most generous, and fascinating games I've ever played (it's on my top ten list). If JP2 was a beefsteak feast, JP3 is a lovely dish of trifle. However, that still makes it better than most adventure games out there, and I heartily recommend it, especially for novice gamers. It's very inviting and user-friendly, and it could make and adventure fan out of anyone.

I think this kind of adventure would still obtain good sales figures today and would make talk about it in the press. Many games have a good opening, how does it look with the end? ... Such a movie-like final recompences for this entertaining game ... For those 30 and up must be said: Who does not know it yet, should start playing it as fast as possible. For the -30 must be said: not everything new is better, especially games without claptrap often have an absorbing plot and a marvelous atmosphere - as JOURNEYMAN PROJECT III - THE LEGACY OF TIME, this quality and innovation has unfortunately a rare character. Who wants to experience thus a nearly "classical" adventure between future and past must acquire this title, unfortunately it is widely out of print.

Even with those annoyances, I daresay that anyone who liked RIVEN will like JOURNEYMAN PROJECT 3 LEGACY OF TIME as much, maybe more; it's a better-than-average MYST takeoff. But three years after BURIED IN TIME, it's a disappointment to see this once-innovative series so emphasize style over substance. As recent adventure games have proven, there's no reason we can't have both.

Quandary
Legacy of Time is a worthwhile addition to the Journeyman Project series; I most certainly enjoyed playing it. Whilst not being too difficult it has an entertaining story, an interesting array of quests to fulfil, and enough gameplay to keep most players happy. On reflection, perhaps it could have been a bit longer, but because of Arthur's helping hand it is a game that I would certainly recommend for novice to intermediate players.

Overall, I'd say that Legacy is a good game. If you're a fan of the JP series, then you should definitely buy this game (but if you are a fan of the series, you probably already have the game by now). If you haven't even heard of the Journeyman Project series, then I suggest you put a little bit more thought into it before buying this game. Hardcore adventure gamers might not like its simplistic puzzles. If you like a good story with a good ending and don't mind the absence of deep, involving puzzles, this might be the game for you. The fact that I have played the second in the series beforehand without a doubt enhanced my enjoyment. But I'm sure it would be just as enjoyable for everyone else.

In the end, the pretty, 360-degree panning environments, the sparse ambient sound, and the modestly challenging puzzles aren't really enough to make JP3 a must-play. Fans of the series will probably enjoy it, but gamers weary of eye-catching but dull adventures might want to wait until someone really does something new with the adventure genre.
