Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis

By and large Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis is not only a great Jurassic Park game but also a great theme park game to boot. There isn’t really any part of the game that is necessarily bad or a bit rough, sure some parts of the game are a of a little lower quality than others but as a whole JP:OG is commendable for the way it takes a popular franchise, adds a unique twist, and comes out not only looking pretty and utilizing a popular franchise but also with solid and addictive gameplay. Jurassic Park fans will snap this up in a heartbeat, and even those who just want a good theme park game will find that JP:OG really is worth the admission price.

Ich bin absoluter Fan der Jurassic Park-Filme und solch ein Spiel war schon lange überfällig. Auch wenn der Einstieg ins komplexe Spiel relativ schwer fällt, ist JPOG eine gelungene Mischung aus Theme Park und Zoo Tycoon, bei der auch die Action nicht zu kurz kommt. Dank der gut ausgenutzten Lizenz und der soliden Technik kommt beim Spielen richtige Filmatmosphäre auf. Aufgrund einiger technischer Probleme (Abstürze mit ATI-Karten) raten wir erst einmal, die Demo anzuspielen, und sein System damit auf die Lauffähigkeit der Vollversion zu testen oder gleich zur inhaltlich identischen Konsolenfassung (PS2) zu greifen.

Operation Genesis is in staat de liefhebber een groter Jurassic Park gevoel te geven dan ander titels ooit in staat waren. Het sim gedeelte zit aardig in elkaar, maar mist soms diepgang. De missies zijn gelukkig gevarieerd. De leukste volgt de gebeurtenissen van de film. Het vinden van fossielen en de actiemomenten in een helikopter of jeep vormen een extra bonus. Uiteraard maken 25 verschillende soorten dinosauriërs het geheel af.

Finally, I have to admit that this game captured my attention... for about a day and a half. After that I already stared feeling the lack of options and the whole game comes down to trying to clone a vicious carnivore and praying the typhoons stay out of your park. If a typhoon does hit you after a couple of hours of play, you will most likely have to start all over again. The appealing and well animated graphics and the beautiful music are capable of capturing your attention... will it be for a couple of hours or a couple of months? That only depends on you.

Jurassic Park ist eine gute Konvertierung der alten Film-Lizenz. Es macht eine ganze Weile Spaß, den Dinos zuzusehen, neue zu klonen und mit dem Helikopter über den Park zu brettern. Allerdings ist die Steuerung zu umständlich: So müssen Sie stets den Weg über das Hauptmenü wählen, wenn Sie mehrfach in derselben Unterrubrik eine Aktion ausführen wollen. Außerdem findet man eigentlich nie die optimale Spiel-Perspektive. Als Fan der Filme habe ich gern an meinen Parks herumgebaut. Knallharte Zoo-Tycoon-Spieler werden allerdings unterfordert.

Die Idee ist so einfach wie genial: Ein Aufbau-Strategiespiel rund um Steven Spielbergs Dino-Epos. Dennoch dauerte es fast zehn Jahre, bis sich schließlich das australische Entwicklungsstudio Blue Tongue der Jurassic Park-Lizenz annahm. Jetzt dürfen Sie Ihre eigene Vergnügungsinsel mit bis zu 25 Dinosaurier-Spezies vom Brachiosaurier bis zum Velociraptor eröffnen.

Even though children will be attracted to Operation Genesis because it has dinosaurs, parents should take note of the ESRB "T for Teen" rating on the box. There's some blood in the game--carnivores can kill livestock, other dinosaurs, or park visitors if they get loose. You'll also need to put down rogue dinosaurs from time to time by shooting them. The violence is never gratuitous, but parents may want to consider these facts before getting this game for a young child. For dinosaur fans who are mature enough, Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis provides an enjoyable experience, with attractive graphics, strategic gameplay, and unique features that provide up-close looks at the dinosaurs in action.

Auch wenn die Urzeitviecher mich bereits seit meiner frühesten Kindheit brennend interessieren, konnte mich Jurassic Park - Operation Genesis nicht ganz überzeugen. Zwar sind die Handlungsmöglichkeiten immens und die zusätzliche Spielvariante abwechslungsreich. Der Baumodus nagt mit seiner Trägheit allerdings an meinem Geduldsfaden. Und wenn dann noch eine Naturkatastrophe meinen liebevoll erstellten Park niederbrezt, ist die Motivation für einen Wiederaufbau gleich null.

The control system is inappropriately simplistic for gamers with hi-resolution monitors and mice. The build options are limited, making the underlying logic easy to discern and take advantage of. The panic events, like ill or rampaging dinos, lead to diverting action in the chopper, but that’s not much more than an occasional cute distraction. On the plus side, keeping the different tourist types happy makes for an interesting challenge, and there’s nothing fundamentally wrong with the game’s construction. The graphics, while not at their best on the technically hobbled review machine, remained illustrative and evocative. Best of all, the dinosaurs themselves were satisfying to watch, being svelte and convincing in their appearance and movements. Those who play the most detailed and complex theme park sims won’t get anything new from Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis. For dinosaur fans, however, it’s a dream come true.

For casual gamers and dinosaur nuts, it’s an entertaining enough romp into the Jurassic Park universe. More hardcore players will want for more, and even the diversionary minigames aren’t quite enough to cover up the lack of depth. It’s like either the second or third Jurassic Park movie (whatever you prefer): It’s not nearly as good as the first, but it’s not as bad as the whichever-you-feel-is-inferior one.

While it's obvious that Operation Genesis doesn't share the record-setting production budgets of the movies from whence it's spawned, it's still just about the best opportunity to play with dinosaurs that PC gamers have had.

Enfin, pour ceux qui seraient lassés du mode libre, le jeu propose aussi des missions spéciales plutôt originales. On sera ainsi amené à prendre des photos de dinosaures à bord d'une jeep, ou à tirer sur les T-Rex depuis un hélico. Sont présentes aussi des missions de sauvetage ou de regroupement d'espèces qu'il faudra guider avec le radar de l'hélico. Bref, le jeu propose un contenu plutôt intéressant même si on fait vite le tour des possibilités autorisées et que le confort de jeu est loin d'égaler celui d'un Theme Park World. Jurassic Park : Operation Genesis reste malgré tout un investissement intéressant pour les amateurs du genre qui n'ont rien contre l'ère jurassique.

Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis isn’t your traditional theme park simulator. Log rides and roller coasters are replaced with living and breathing dinosaurs that you must research and create then strive to keep alive through a complicated real-world simulator.

Undoubtedly, this title will face more criticism from PC critics than with the console ones. Gamers on the PC platform see a new game like this every month; good or bad. Genesis makes an earnest effort to bring new vigor to the genre. There are some roars to be found in Genesis. But the Jurassic Park license alone can only take it so far before it becomes formulaic. Thereafter, the roars become little more than a growl.

Overall, I would love to recommend Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis to you gamers who are looking for another park building simulator … but I have to advise you to buy with caution. Kids who haven’t really had the chance to play some other “sim this” or “sim that” stuff yet and love dinosaurs will get a kick out of the graphics and the game. If you are a veteran player looking for another title to tide you over until the next Mall Tycoon comes out … you may want to pass this one up and instead grab an expansion to one of the titles you already own.

Ik had wel zin om de plaats van John Hammond in te nemen en proberen Jurassic Park aantrekkelijk te maken voor de bezoekers. Maar als John met dit materiaal moest werken, dan begrijp ik maar al te goed waarom zijn park ten onder ging. Een gemiste kans op een leuke heropleving van Jurassic Park, te veel tekortkomingen om tot de goede middenmoot te behoren.

Mir hat das Spiel sehr gut gefallen, da das einzige etwas misslungene am Spiel, nämlich die Grafik, nicht von entscheidender Bedeutung ist. Außerdem ist Operation Genesis sehr variantenreich, was dazu führt, dass man etwas länger braucht bis man alles herausgefunden hat. Zusätzlich kann man die Landschaft mit der Kamera genau untersuchen und auch die Steuerung ist sehr einfach. Wenn jemanden Dinosaurier besonders interessieren, wird das Spiel gleich noch besser, da man während des Spiels sehr viele kleine Details über die Urvieher erfährt.

Abschließend bleibt mir zu sagen, dass es sich bei "Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis" um ein Spiel handelt, welches es versteht, mit grafischen Darstellungen zu glänzen. Die Animationen der Saurier sind wirklich authentisch und realistisch und laden durchaus dazu ein, sich zurück zu lehnen und seine Saurier mittels Verfolgerkamera entspannt zu beobachten. Für den Saurierinteressierten werden sehr viele Informationen bereitgestellt. Die fachliche Zusammenarbeit mit "Jurassic Park Institute" hat sich wirklich gelohnt. Alle die auf der Suche nach einer Parksimulation sind, aber nicht unbedingt Saurier als Hauptakteure haben müssen, sollten sich den Kauf gut überlegen, da "Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis" wahrlich nicht der beste Vertreter seines Genres ist.
