Overall this is probably one of the best turn based/RPG/RTS games I’ve ever played. Hugely enjoyable and immensely fun, I give this game my highest recommendation. Big props to Paradox Interactive and Neocore Games for making an incredibly polished, rewarding title that combines strategy and role-playing.

Like its predecessor before it, King Arthur II: The Role-Playing Wargame successfully melds role-play, adventure, diplomatic and combat elements into a cohesive, one of a kind experience. The additions and changes make the game feel almost as fresh as its predecessor and discovering them is almost an adventure by itself.

It’s light on the strategy, but an intriguing dark fantasy tale and RPG elements lift King Arthur II above the average.

King Arthur 2 surprised me with its approach to the RTS genre by adding such an in-depth story mechanic. Although this may become a bit boring for some players, it certainly adds to the story. I’m not sure if it is for everyone, but fans of the previous game, and of the genre in general, will find this an enjoyable romp, with plenty to keep them occupied for many, many hours.

Whether or not King Arthur II is one step forward, two steps back or the other way around is going to depend on what you expect from this sequel. The streamlined campaign may raise many an eyebrow while the text adventure quests will elicit more smiles than frowns, and any fan of this genre of strategy will still spend countless hours both on and off the battlefield. It's not quite the diamond in the rough that many have hoped for, perhaps, but you'll be hard pressed to keep yourself from playing just one more turn.

Game Watcher
There’s something naturally intriguing about King Arthur II – perhaps it’s the setting. With so many Tolkien RPGs, historical strategy titles and tiresome modern shooters, a game that genuinely captures a new era and source material is stirring. It’s by no means perfect, especially in the technical department, but let the developers work out the kinks and you’ll be rewarded with a genuinely decent game.

Games Radar
The easy comparison is to say that King Arthur 2 is like Game of Thrones stapled to Total War. However, the truth is that Neocore Games has created something unique. The gameplay is a great mix of genres, and the world is fresh, exciting, and full of intrigue. The problem is execution. Both King Arthur games have shared the same unique concept, but Neocore Games may not have the manpower or the budget to fully extract the potential of both sides of this complex dual-genre game. There's still a lot to love though, and we had a blast playing it. It's just impossible to escape the nagging frustration that this game was so close to greatness but stumbled, and had to settle for “good.”

If and when Neocore patches the AI into respectability, even if that’s in conjunction with letting it cheat with damage/HP numbers under the hood, I’ll be the first one to jump in and dump a hundred hours into King Arthur II. For now, I’ll play something that’s at least half a step beyond shooting fish in a barrel.

In conclusion, I was left with the sense of wanting more from the game, but still glad to having played it. While upon release the game was plagued with crash issues and bugs, these are easily fixed by patches. In fact at the time of publishing this review there has already been at least one patch to address issues. So for that matter alone I wouldn’t recommend against this game. I would say anyone who has enjoyed both simple choice driven adventure games as well as grand scale combat games should check out King Arthur 2

Aber was passiert?

Any video game is judged by how well it hooks the player—the best strategy titles cause players to become obsessed with their various systems, and to lose sleep playing late into the night. To the contrary, in King Arthur II, I found myself skipping battles whenever I could, and I stayed up late playing only because I had to write this review. That doesn't mean there's nothing to enjoy about this title, and, as they say, your mileage may vary. Only one thing is for certain: If you buy this game, you will spend a lot of time being read to.

It's sad that I've come away from King Arthur 2 with such a negative impression. Almost universally, I crave more and better storytelling in my games. Here we have a game that's oozing with story, but that's about it. I wish the writing was enough to carry it into positive territory, but truth be told, the gameplay bored me to tears and I couldn't wait to put it down after even a half-hour session. Maybe King Arthur 3, if it's made, will find the right balance.

New Game Network
Even though King Arthur II has some interesting ideas and tries to do something unique by blending Role Playing elements with the Total War approach to strategy, in its current state the game is wildly inconsistent and very imbalanced. Battles generally provide no challenge and play out as chaotic melees, but are punctuated with a few brutally hard battles where the enemy army is composed of difficult to counter flying beasts. The role playing elements are interesting and add depth to the severely lacking strategically component, but overall King Arthur II feels like it could have been so much more with a bit more time and care put into optimization and balancing. Paradox has already released several patches, and with more this game could improve considerably, but in its current state, it is difficult to recommend.

Ten Ton Hammer
It’s a valiant effort, and could stand on its own as a grand strategy game, RTS, or other genre if it focused strictly on that. The biggest problem with King Arthur II is that is tries to do too much and, as a result, doesn’t do any of it truly well. You can forgive a game that overextends its scope if it still has some killer feature or trait that keeps you going, but it’s that soul this game is missing. After a few hours with King Arthur II, I was ready to resign from the round table.

Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
I have always been a gamer who wants designers, developers and publishers to do something new and different, even when the results are not always stellar. The industry can only support so many clones of Total War, Diablo and Doom. Much like its predecessors, King Arthur II is an attempt to weld together two disparate genres. The results are, in many ways, mixed. I would have a hard time recommending the game to hardcore strategy gamers, because it’s just not that kind of game. I also might have a hard time recommending it to RPG gamers, because it’s not an RPG with strategy elements. But I would recommend it to someone looking for something different. The results are not stellar, but King Arthur II is worth a look for anyone seeking to break out of the same old routine in various clones of other genres. Those looking for something outside the mainstream should pick up the demo and give it a try.

If you missed the first game, there is some value to be found here. Even though its effects are not as wide ranging as we’d hoped the whole questing/RPG aspects of the game still maintain their appeal and mark the franchise out as a unique experience. For those who have already experienced the curiosity that was the first game, however, you’ll likely find yourself disappointed by just how little has changed since then.

There are some features to love in King Arthur II. The story is interesting and there are a handful of solid, entertaining gameplay mechanics, but be prepared to fight through a few of the game's weaker elements.

While it certainly has plenty of missteps, KAII's nods to (or blatant rip-offs from) other classic games make it interesting from a nostalgia perspective. Because the gameplay is so straightforward, newbies to the genre who are nevertheless fans of the setting may find a friendly sort of Frankenstein monster to play with here.

I’ll admit to being on the fence in terms of advising you to purchase this title. It’s not great, in fact there are many elements I wouldn’t even classify as good, but there aren’t any massive, game destroying, deficiencies either. There is little to keep you playing this once you beat it either; the game has no multiplayer or co-op features. I will simply suggest caveat emptor, buyer beware. If you struggle dealing with a game’s shortcomings and typically pick apart the mechanics of a title, don’t pick this one up. If you don’t care and are looking for some mindless swordsmanship, pick it up when it comes on sale on Steam would be my advice.

King Arthur II: The Role-Playing Wargame delivers as a role-playing game but flounders as a wargame, thanks to a lack of tactical depth. The combat just isn't good, and that's sad because King Arthur II tells a fantastic story. It's better than those seen in most full-fledged RPGs these days, it has a different take on morality systems, and it captures the mysterious and wondrous spirit of Arthurian legend.

Mix strategie, RPG a textové adventury má své silné příběhové momenty a nezřídka dovedou zabavit i samotné bitvy. O to více hru ale sráží zbytečná linearita a výrazná nevyváženost herních prvků.

Gaming Nexus
Oddly enough, King Arthur II is stuck in the same dilemma full-motion video games were: it is hard to both tell a story and give the player meaningful choices to make. In the end, the strategic and tactical elements feel like a sideshow to the railroad that is the main quest. There is fun and creativity in here, but interspersed with long stretches of tedium and frustration.

I've seen King Arthur 2 improve over just a few days, I imagine that more patches will be released - and perhaps Merlin's magic will address more of the game's flaws, pad out its linear and plodding narrative and finally turn Morgana Le Fay into a woman. In the meantime, however, it remains glossy rather than glorious, decidedly wobbly and very limited.

GameSpy
It's easy to see the potential for King Arthur 2 to have been a good game rather than "not bad." But it never gets there, mostly because it's doing a half-dozen unrelated things at once, and none of them very well. True, it's definitely improved since release: the framerate has gone from stuttery and borderline-unplayable to a decent 30fps or higher, for example. But its problems go deeper into the design than patches can fix. With the campaign behind me, King Arthur 2 hasn't left me wanting more -- it's left me longing to reinstall Total War: Shogun 2.
