Law & Order: Dead on the Money

Law & Order: Dead on the Money is one of the finest police procedural or detective adventure games ever created. Being a fan of the series may give a positive bias toward the game but, just as clearly, being a fan of the series would lead me to be very critical if the game did not fairly represent the quality of the show. Frankly, I wasn't expecting this fine an effort, cynically worried that the game might just be a quickie spin-off from the T.V. series. How wrong I was; how pleased I became; and how happy you'll be with this game.

So how DOES it measure up? Very well! This is a quality game, fun to play, and with such a low MSRP………. If you're reading this review, you're probably into adventures and mysteries. This is a game you should play!

Law & Order: Dead on the Money certainly has its share of problems. The time restriction can get frustrating and managing the case file can become tedious. The game is also relatively short. However, despite its issues, the game still has a lot to offer. The murder case is not extremely complicated, but it is interesting enough to keep you searching for clues and trying to unravel the truth. Finding all the important clues and presenting them effectively during the trial makes for a distinct gaming experience that you will not find in many other titles. If you are a fan of Law & Order or similar legal dramas, Dead on the Money is most certainly worth a look. The game may not be very challenging for seasoned adventurers, but even those with a casual interest in Law & Order and its spin-offs should find something to enjoy in Dead on the Money.

Overall, I'd have to say this game is a must-buy to anyone who likes Law & Order. It might be a little disappointing when you get to the end, but its still good fun. The graphics and voice acting is top-notch and until the novelty wears off, collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses is enjoyable. Anyone who hasn't seen the show (who are you people?) or doesn't particularly care for it may want to pass it up though, as it is a niche title.

A fun detective adventure game, albeit one with a few gameplay problems. The game itself is not terribly long, either, so the longevity may be questionable.

Still though, Law & Order is a solid murder mystery on its own merits. Is it like the TV show? Most likely. Was it fun to play? Once I got it to play, certainly. Worth the money? Dead on.

As soon as I heard about the imminent release of this Law & Order game I was interested. Not only did it sound intriguing but it also seemed to me that, based on a long running Television series, it might be a good candidate for attracting new adventure game players into the fold. I've just finished it, and with a couple of reservations, it gets my seal of approval on both the above counts. Firstly there's lots to enjoy for adventure game players; it's an entertaining game with a difference (more on this later) and, secondly, fans of the TV Law & Order series will feel right at home because it is just what the lawyer ordered.

So, overall, I wasn’t really enthusiastic about Law & Order: Dead on the Money. I liked the concept of the game, and it was sort of fun to play a lawyer for a while, but the pacing and interface really got on my nerves. The C.S.I. game handled the same sorts of things much better. But if you’re a fan of the series, or if you’re just looking for something slow-paced and different to play, then Dead on the Money might be worth a spin.

'Law & Order' könnte aufgrund seiner innovativen Spielidee ein wirklich gutes Adventure sein. Doch technische Mängel und einige üble Schnitzer im Gameplay lassen es zu einem Durchschnittstitel verkommen, was ich persönlich wirklich sehr bedauere. Ich verstehe auch nicht, warum The Adventure Company beinahe regelmäßig die Übersetzung der Spiele in den Sand setzt, wodurch schon sehr viel an Atmosphäre verloren geht. Lobenswert ist hingegen die kostenlose Dreingabe des offiziellen Lösungsbuches, was auf jeden Fall recht nützlich ist - nur sollte dann auch die Frage erlaubt sein, ob die durchgängige Verwendung einer Hilfe wirklich der Sinn eines Adventures ist. Zu empfehlen ist das Spiel für jeden, der mal eine neue Erfahrung im Bereich des Adventuregenres machen möchte und über einige Macken hinwegsehen kann. Bleibt zu hoffen, dass Legacy Interactive aus den Fehlern lernt und zu Beginn des Jahres mit 'Law & Order II' einen ausgereifteren Nachfolger in die Händlerregale bringt.

Pas mal de soucis donc mais au final la balance s'équilibre relativement bien. Même sans être fan on s'éclate bien à se paumer dans les faux semblants de l'enquête, à patauger dans les indices foireux. Le principal regret se portera sans aucun doutes sur une durée de vie bien trop réduite vis à vis du travail à effectuer (en termes de gameplay) et du prix à payer (en termes de porte-monnaie). Sympa mais sans plus.

Because it's such a good translation of the show, Law & Order fans will likely persevere despite the game's frustrating structure. Fans of adventure games will also probably be glad to have a decent mystery to solve. You can play through the game twice with little time investment, and as long as you take copious notes of what works, you'll be able to solve the game eventually. But it's unfortunate that Legacy Interactive felt the need to make everything so much more difficult than necessary. As you endlessly comb the screen as the clock ticks away, you'll no doubt agree that a shorter, more forgiving Law & Order game would have been much better.

Ich hatte mir von Law & Order eigentlich nicht viel erwartet. "Wieder mal ein Spiel zu einem Film oder einer Fernsehserie!", dachte ich. Doch nicht zum ersten Mal wurde ich eines besseren belehrt. Da ich ohnehin eine ausgeprägte Schwäche für Krimis habe, zog mich das Spiel schnell in seinen Bann. Auch die Spielzeit ist recht ordentlich und auf Grund der guten Story wurde mir nie langweilig, zumindest im Detektivteil. Im Gerichtsabschnitt gab es schon einige unnötige Längen, aber trotzdem machte das Spiel bis zum Schluss Spaß. Auf jeden Fall ist das Spiel nichts für Ungeduldige und Freunde von Actionkrachern, Grafikeffekten und Ballerorgien. In Law & Order ist Köpfchen gefordert, und zwar jede Menge.

Man muss Law & Order zugute halten, dass es Abstand nimmt von der langweiligen Adventure-Formel, die Cryo seinerzeit einführte: Man klickt sich zwar immer noch durch verwaschene 360°-Umgebungen (was nervend ist), aber wenigstens muss man sich nicht mit haarsträubenden Zahnrad- und Schalterrätseln herumschlagen. Stattdessen beschäftigt man sich in Law & Order auf interessante Weise mit dem Alltag eines Kriminalpolizisten.

Primary source of friction in Law & Order: Dead on the Money is the fact that you can't get into the essentials, can't get really involved with the case, but is always detracted by strategic considerations. The murder case and the search for the murderer - thus the actual story - are pushed into the background, the central task becomes to create a strategy to bring your actions into a temporal and capacitive optimal order.

Wenn man mal von den relativ guten Ansätzen der tickenden Zeit und der Gerichtsverhandlung absieht, ist von der deutschen Version, vor allem aufgrund der katastrophalen Lokalisation, abzuraten. Fans der Serie, die unter Umständen bereit sind, über die mäßige Grafik hinwegzusehen, sollten vielleicht eher die englische Version in Erwägung ziehen. Man kann nur hoffen, dass die nächsten Adventures, die the Adventure Company herausbringt, von weit besser Qualität sind, als Law&Order, sonst sieht es, zumindestens für den deutschen Markt, schlecht aus.

New-York Police Judiciaire, le jeu, entend nous proposer un concept d’aventure attractif où enquête policiaire et procès en justice assurent une longueur de jeu et une variété promettant d'être agréable. Et pourtant…
