I’ve been having a great time playing League of Legends. It’s a very well made game that is challenging and exciting, and between its many champions and numerous upgrade options it offers nearly limitless replay value. A truly solid game in its own right, League becomes an absolute winner when you couple it with the fact that you don’t have to pay a single penny to play to your heart’s content. I can’t think of any reason not to get it.

Even though you play on the same few maps with similar items, there’s so much depth and strategy going on that no two matches of League of Legends ever feel the same. It’s distinctive style encourages surprise attacks and frequent use of skill-shot powers, and its colorful art style makes everything pop on the screen. Learning how to make the most of its characters and to become an asset to a team is a long and challenging process, but once you’ve got it down, it’s incredibly satisfying to work together to destroy your enemies in this amazing MOBA.

League of Legends is not just a game: it's a cutthroat competitive digital sport where the winners roar in victory and the losers whimper in defeat. You don't need to play on the same level as the pros to experience the thrills of these online battlegrounds, however. Blending elements of action role-playing, real-time strategy, and tower defense games into an engrossing amalgam of awesome, League of Legends is a free-to-play game that ensures each play session yields a unique and explosive experience.

Once you’re passed the initial barrier you’ll see why League of Legends has grown so big with its simple but deep approach to the MOBA genre.

Players of DotA have probably been playing this game for a while now, or at least been following its progress. If you have not heard of DotA, but fancy a game that can be played with others, has a tactical edge and really gets the adrenaline running, give this a try. Its free, and you can’t argue with that.
MMO Game Site (Nov 29, 2010)
My favorite part of the game is that they are constantly adding new content. Almost every week a new patch is released. In this patch they rotate the free champions, which are the champions that you can play without owning. You can buy champions by using Influence Points (IP), which you get after every battle, or Riot Points (RP), which you can get by using money. They also add new skins for characters, which can only be bought with RP, balance out classes, fix bugs, and on occasion add a new character to the game. One major problem is the server’s reliability. Although it is getting much better you never know when the server is going to go down. About once a month the server completely shuts down without warning from about 12-24 hours. It used to happen almost weekly, but they’ve been trying to fix it. Other than this it does go down for maintenance, although its only once a week, scheduled, and not for very long.

It's free, so there's no reason not to try it out, and there's a good chance you'll find yourself still playing after a few weeks, eager to pick up the full version.

(Checkup) Ich spiele League of Legends erst seit einigen Monaten aktiv.

On the whole, League of Legends is a very well-done game; it would be a worthy purchase at $30, but you can actually download it for the low low price of free. That's almost a no-brainer download, which they offer because they plan to charge for additional content in the future - which you don't have to buy if you don't want to. It’s definitely worth a shot if you’re looking for something off the beaten FPS path, and makes a very nice addition to the stable of competitive online games.

Ultimately, LoL’s minor disadvantages are pretty damn redundant – we could complain about the details if it actually cost anything. Well, it doesn’t. The main pro and con of the game is the same feature – the concept of a slow, simple DotA. This has nothing to do with how many heroes, how many maps, runes or items Riot Games will plant into the game later on – it just boils down to the level of difficulty you’re looking for and if you’re willing to pay for it.

I can't say what effect the infuriating unlock system might have on LoL's competitive longevity -- the cynic in me says it'll stunt the game's long-term growth, creating an unmanageable gulf between the skilled and the wannabes -- but it's still the best game of its kind I've played. If nothing else, it definitely takes careful measures to ease in new players (meaning the non-Defense of the Ancients elite). If the developers can find it in their Grinch hearts to grow a little less miserly with the in-game duckets, League of Legends might just go down in competitive-gaming history right alongside the Street Fighters and the StarCrafts.

But there's not much room for negativity here. More time, heart and money has gone into this than any other free game I can remember playing, and I think Riot Games is going to make good on its promise of post-release development. Until further notice, this is the DOTA game you should be playing.

GameStar (Germany) (Dec 11, 2009)
As a ‘gift’ to fans of DotA, League Of Legends does little wrong, but efforts made to broaden its appeal may prove largely fruitless.
Thunderbolt Games (Feb 01, 2011)
You may not have to spend anything to play League of Legends. Though, you will be spending something precious, your time. Those coming from DotA will find a familiar experience, coupled with a more friendly approach to certain game mechanics. Which is certainly not a bad thing, since the game still plays great in the same spirit that DotA made popular, yet more accessible. Those wanting more of the same, or stronger competitive aspects may be hesitant. Yet being free, there is nothing to lose trying it and seeing if Riot will finally make good on their promises. League of Legends is worth your time, but how much is up to much you’re willing to compromise. Improvements are constantly being updated and although team mates make or break many matches, there is genuine fun to be found. Only you can decide if it’s worth investing your time, but hey, at least it didn’t cost you to start playing.
GamersGlobal (Dec 25, 2009)
Mana Pool (Sep 17, 2010)
If you like playing tower defense Role-Playing games with some elements of MMO’s, League of Legends will definitely be a game for you. The game is free to play, but is still worth buying (see Amazon widget on the side of this review for prices) as this gives you instant access to several characters and also gives you around 1600 Riot Points so you can purchase other characters or skins. I hope to see you soon on one of the battlefields!
True Game Headz (Dec 02, 2009)
“LoL” is very hard to recommend, even as a free game. Despite the efforts to get new players to understand the mechanics, there isn’t much depth or strategy involved to keep them coming back for more. To make this worse, Riot Games have implemented an online shop and persistent levelling that gives an advantage for people with way too much time on their hands or have plenty of cash to throw around. This doesn’t necessary make the unenjoyable, as the game is still somewhat fun to play, but don’t expect “League of Legends” to change your gaming schedule or challenge your mind.
