Amazing, takes one of the best games of last year and improves on it, I will be playing this game for the next few years (until Left 4 Dead 3 comes out) just about everything in the game is perfectly designed and perfectly balanced. It is worth noting that if you do not have online access you will only have access to 1/5thof the total content. It is designed to be played online with friends so if you have internet access and have friends then you need this game.
The Escapist (Nov 24, 2009)
Cool new weapons, likable new characters, dastardly new zombies, huge new levels with epic new finales. Doesn't quite deliver on all the promises, but it delivers a damn entertaining experience. It's a bigger version of Left 4 Dead, and it's hard to imagine how anyone could go back.
Out Of Eight (Dec 01, 2009)
The graphics are a significant step up from the original game as the level of gore has drastically increased. Compared to this iteration, Left 4 Dead 1 looks like it came out far longer than a year ago. Taken as a whole, Left 4 Dead 2 is a fantastic game, and that’s how I am rating it since I did not do a review of the original title. And even if you consider that it is a sequel released a year after the first game, Left 4 Dead 2 is enhanced in every area; whether you decide to invest in the new game depends on your overall enjoyment of the series. And who doesn’t like killing zombies?
Peliplaneetta.net (Dec 11, 2009)
Play.tm (Nov 20, 2009)
It's better than the first game, then. The biggest achievement, however, is that Valve - who are known to take their time - have managed to put such an enormous wealth of content out in a single year. Left 4 Dead 2 doesn't just add a few new levels and features, it fiddles and increments a formula that few thought needed changing in the first place. The team have managed to infuse their sequel with the exact same kind of nuanced creative energies that usually takes them years, and in doing so they've made last year's accomplished Left 4 Dead look like a simple mod in comparison.
2404.org PC Gaming (Dec 28, 2009)
Left 4 Dead 2 is better and bigger than Left 4 Dead. It’s a sequel that builds on its incredibly stern and ludicrously fun foundations, expanding in all the right places and scrubbing out all the little problems that existed in the original. An expanded weapon load-out, an expanded infected cast designed to tackle all the common turtling strategies, and more expansive level design to accommodate the new infected: It’s simply a better a game and one of the best this year.
It was only a few months ago that many fans were talking about boycotting L4D2 and it’s not that we don’t agree with some of the issues raised by the authors of the petition; but we can’t help but liken the more partisan supporters of the boycott to Fox News reporters, because having reviewed this sequel and actually played the game, we feel that Valve was wholly justified in turning it into the next iteration of the series. This isn’t just a Left 4 Dead upgrade, this is an evolution of Left 4 Dead in every department that we will still be playing when the arthritis creeps in and our teeth begin to drop out.
411mania.com (Dec 12, 2009)
So you thought the original Left 4 Dead had gotten everything right? Get Left 4 Dead 2 and see how wrong you were. Left 4 Dead 2 takes the original game and turns everything up to eleven, while adding in great new options, gameplay, weapons and the most epic campaigns I’ve ever played. If you love FPSes, wild frenetic action, zombies or any combination of the three, you’re going to want this game.
GameSpy (Nov 24, 2009)
When it was first announced, I thought Left 4 Dead 2 was nothing more than a glorified expansion. After having spent hours with it -- and many more to come -- I appreciate the sequel's major and subtle differences. I'm not ready to shelf my copy of the original just yet, but I honestly can't see myself going back to it when L4D2 is superior in virtually every way.
Eurogamer.net (UK) (Nov 17, 2009)
It's an amazing volume of new modes and features for a game that once kept things simple, but it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise to see them. Whereas once we treated Left 4 Dead as a stopgap between Half-Lifes, this is no longer a weird little side project with modest expectations, and Valve is confident enough to play around with it, safe in the knowledge that you can trust your players. Left 4 Dead proved it. And whereas that game had a personality, this one is overflowing with it.
Mana Pool (Sep 27, 2010)
At the end of the day, L4D2 expanded greatly on the original and not only brings new content, but makes the old better. By adding new multiplayer modes, weapons, and special infected L4D2 is worth the full sticker price. There’s a lot of re-playability in just the campaign on its own, with five different campaigns with 5 levels each plus the bonus content. The multiplayer overall doubles the re-playability of the game with Mutation modes, Realism, Versus and Scavenge modes. L4D2 will keep your attention as long as you enjoy smashing a guitar over a zombies head.
Gamereactor (Sweden) (Nov 17, 2009)
IGN (Nov 16, 2009)
Whether or not Left 4 Dead 2 is for you really depends on your level of exposure and affinity for the style of hardcore team-focused gameplay Valve is offering here. If you’re still interested in the gameplay, then you’re going to enjoy every aspect of the sequel since it’s improved in all areas, from available game modes to strength of character and personality to replayability and its visual style. After playing, you’ll find it impossible to go back to the first game. Though plenty of other games offer co-operative gameplay against mobs of computer-controlled foes, no other game emphasizes teamwork as strongly as this, and few other games are as satisfying when you’re able to pull through successfully, particularly when competing in Versus mode against four human-controlled boss zombies. If you saw the original and were always curious to try it out, then by all means get the sequel. It is, without a doubt, the better game.
GameSpot (Nov 17, 2009)
Though it comes a mere one year after the original, Left 4 Dead 2 is a much better game and much better value. The new campaigns and unique game modes offer more variety and more longevity, while all the other additions and tweaks make the already great gameplay even more enjoyable. Even the AI has improved a little bit, and while they still aren't big on using pipe bombs or Molotovs and are prone to missteps, they seem to have a better grasp of tactics and will follow you a bit more closely. Still, Left 4 Dead 2 is best enjoyed with friends, and every mode is seamlessly integrated online. Though the core gameplay remains pretty much the same, there is more than enough new content and improved action to make this zombie apocalypse highly recommendable.
YouGamers (Dec 17, 2009)
Left 4 Dead 2, like the first one, is a fun and replayable co-op experience that can be tons of fun with a group of friends. Unfortunately somewhere during the drive to add more and more weapons, enemies, maps and game modes, that magic Valve iterate-polish-polish cycle got cut short and the end result, while still good, is not quite as magical as the first one.

wei Herzen schlagen - ach - in meiner Brust.

Gamers.at (Nov 18, 2009)
Was bleibt jetzt also nun unter dem Strich unserer L4D 2-Rechnung?
Cheat Happens (Nov 24, 2009)
I’ll admit it – I’m a sucker for zombie games, but who can blame me when developers like Valve keep churning out games like Left 4 Dead 2. With the sequel, Valve has built upon an incredibly fun franchise, and tweaked it enough to make it seem new. There’s nothing incredibly revolutionary here, but dear lord is it fun. Those who weren’t fans of the original are warned to stay away, there’s nothing here to convince you otherwise, but fans will love the new additions.
PCActu (Nov 19, 2009)
InsightBits (Jan 22, 2010)
Owners of the first game are likely to be frustrated, as it feels ‘more of the same’ with a bit more polish. I don´t feel that the price tag can be justified by the product for the majority in this category, although it is fair to say that it makes the original L4D look like the unfinished product. Owners of the original can basically knock two points off from my final score. As a standalone game, though, L4D2 really is another very enjoyable, expansive multiplayer game. The variety in the missions, the quality of the voice work and the sheer fun factor really do show that Valve know how to craft their products, and L4D2 sits proudly on the shelf alongside many of their other games. The feeling you get that you are creating your own tale within the game is also something that very few other games can match, and therefore I can recommend this to most people who enjoy action games.
Thunderbolt Games (Dec 21, 2009)
Add in new weapons, both guns and melee, and Left 4 Dead 2 comes out as a well-rounded, balanced game that fans of the first are sure to love and newcomers will definitely get a kick out of, too. And if you were involved in the boycott, well, we’ll even forgive you if you’ll just give this wonderful game a chance.
Dagens Nyheter (Dec 03, 2009)
AusGamers (Nov 19, 2009)
Left 4 Dead 2 promotes team play. You rely on your team-mates. If you're looking for a strictly single-player game, this might not be for you. If you hated the first one, it probably isn't for you. If you've never played Left 4 Dead, play the demo and see what you think. Personally I find it a very enjoyable experience both initially in single-player, and long-term in the various multiplayer modes. Left 4 Dead 2 invigorates the brand, and I definitely recommend it to L4D fans and new players alike. Please note: The bulk of this review is based on the non-modified version which we've scored an 8.5. The 5 in the field below represents the Australia-specific modified version which, against the un-modified game, is much less enjoyable.
