Operation eindeutig gelungen.

IGN
War of the Ring is definitely presented and made for the average strategy gamers and those that may not have been drawn to the genre in the past. And to this end, it does a good job. You'll find all of the normal features that you would expect in a typical RTS. You'll have to construct buildings on a map that serve several purposes such as training units and upgrading their abilities. All the while you'll have to mine ore from deposits, found conveniently in mounds in green pastures (lame) and harvest food using wells, which were conveniently located near the ore deposits. Then you'll need to build up an army and loose it upon the enemy while making sure that your "town" is defended as well. Mission objectives differ depending on the level, most of which have been done before.

As a whole, War of the Ring offers a solid if not original effort through the much trodden RTS genre. The short technology tree doesn’t offer the gamer a whole lot to look forward to, and the missions aren’t very challenging either. The single player campaigns offer an entertaining story though, and fans of the books will likely want to play through them just for that. Overall, War of the Ring is a very vanilla offering, but will still likely hold the attention of most RTS gamers who want a quick Lord of the Rings fix after watching the movies.

Overall, playing through War of the Ring is certainly not a bad experience. Being able to command the armies depicted in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and controlling heroes like Legolas, Gimli, and Boromir is entertaining. However, those looking for a true and original real-time strategy challenge will be very disappointed with War of the Ring. Those looking for a game that truly captures the atmosphere of the Lord of the Rings trilogy will also be equally disappointed. War of the Ring can only be recommended to Lord of the Rings fans with a casual interest in real-time strategy games.

Lord of the Rings: War of the Ring is the first RTS foray into the world of Middle Earth. As such, it has garnered a large amount of interest among die-hard Tolkien fans, the more casual LOTR movie fan and also the strategy enthusiasts, who may or may not be into all things Tolkien. Because of high expectations and pre-conceived ideas of what a Middle-Earth RTS should entail, this game will inevitably be held to slightly higher standards, which may be unfair, but if a company decides to take up the gauntlet of setting a game inside a hugely popular realm, then they must also be ready for the closer attention.

So, faithful reader, after reading all this, you must decide whether you are prepared to dole out $49.99 for such an experience. Unless Liquid addresses these major technical issues with a decent patch, I think it'll be safe to forecast that War of the Ring will flop under a flood of negative feedback from the gaming community. There are many issues conflicting with the actual story and we were rather disappointed that the game fails to convey the epic scope of Tolkien's mythology (for that, we still look forward to EA's Battle for Middle-earth). Conversely, if you are a casual gamer looking to enjoy an RTS classic like Battle Realms and Warcraft 3, this one should be right up your alley.

When I say that War of the Ring is a clone of WarCraft, I mean it from the bottom of my heart. The differences between this title and the Blizzard series that spawned a genre are minor, and almost uniformly bad. The most glaring deficiency in this title is in the variety of units and factions. There are only two options of who to play as, and neither is comparable to anything in current RTS titles. Even legendary heroes such as Aragorn and Legolas are less exciting to use than those found in WarCraft III.

You’re going to hear a lot of comparisons between War of the Rings and that other Vivendi product, and you won’t just be hearing them from me. Some of you won’t like this comparison. Many of you are already planning to send me emails explaining how you can select more units at once, and how War of the Rings actually uses the Battle Realms engine, and how the Orcs in Warcraft ride wolves, while those in WotR ride wargs. Clearly different.

Skirmish and multiplayer have a wide range of options, from the obligatory deathmatch to a few exotic game types. The best of these is catapult, which is based on one of the game's single-player missions. As the name suggests, there's a gigantic catapult on the map somewhere, and the goal is to locate and seize control of it so you can rain gigantic boulders on enemy bases. The trick, of course, is trying to keep your base adequately defended while at the same time trying to seize and maintain control of the catapult. This is difficult, of course, because your opponent will throw waves of attackers at you in a desperate attempt to seize it for himself. It makes for some good fun as you try to race forces around the map to where they're needed most.

Right up until units actually start to fight, the game is a treat for both Middle-earth and RTS fans. Then it all goes straight to hell. As with Liquid’s colossally disappointing Battle Realms (upon which War of the Ring is built), combat is nothing more than a cluster frag: a mass of flailing limbs and slashing weapons in a tiny view screen that ultimately signifies little. It’s like buying a big, beautiful car and then using it to haul trash.

War has come, and hordes of orcs fight armies of humans as Nazgul soar overhead. Trolls wade into battle swinging tree trunks and living tree-trunks called Huorns meet them head to head. Dwarves fight side-by-side with Elves and the riders have ridden hard from Rohan, as Sierra's foray into the realm—the literary realm—of Middle Earth for the first time.

For those wishing to rule Middle-Earth, wish no longer. The real-time strategy War of the Ring follows the events of the novels and takes place during Sauron's rise in The Two Towers. While the game will appeal to hardcore Tolkien fans, WOTR looks and feels too much like other RTS titles, including Liquid's own Battle Realms.

I really wanted to love War of the Ring. It was put together by the team from Liquid Entertainment who brought us the underrated Battle Realms, and sports the license from one of the most beloved fantasy franchises in the world: The Lord of the Rings. It's also, as far as I know, the first time an RTS has been set in Tolkien's world. That means I finally get to command the armies of Middle-earth against the evil hordes of Sauron (or in the game's best twist, the hordes of Sauron against those annoying do-gooders). Unfortunately, while WotR is a good title that offers a lot of fun, it simply doesn't offer a game that's new or interesting enough to raise it from the pack of similar RTS titles available.

The Lord of the Rings is a hot commodity these days, particularly in the world of video games; The LotR universe has been host to nearly every genre imaginable. The most obvious genre for this property however, has yet to be touched: real time strategy. Sierra has decided to fill that void by releasing War of the Ring.

Well rather than keep you guessing it is in our mind the former although in the development of the campaign portion of the game there was some effort to pay homage to the story. The game itself looks very much like Warcraft 3 (even down to similar menus) and because of this the units (especially the evil ones) have the noddy in toy land feel about them. Evil units rather than evoking a sense of dread are a colorful bunch of cute little munchkins.
