MICROPROSE SENDS 100,000 UNITS OF THE M1 TANK PLATOON® II PC CD-ROM
OFF TO THE FRONT LINES
Game Simulates Comprehensive Ground Military Action Complete With Skirmishes Based on Real Modern Encounters
"M1 Tank Platoon II retains the play and interactive elements of the original M1 Tank Platoon while taking full advantage of the capabilities of the new generation of computers," said Scott Spanburg, producer and lead programmer.
"M1 Tank Platoon II is much more than a 'tank sim' game," said Tom Nichols, Senior Director of Product Marketing at MicroProse. "MicroProse has combined the best of tank and flight simulation and tactical battlefield strategy to provide an all-encompassing 3-D modern ground warfare experience for the player. This game is as close as a person can get to war without actually going to combat, swallowing sand, and getting stuck in the over-heated cockpit of powerful combat vehicles themselves," added Nichols.
M1 Tank Platoon II provides a highly realistic, submersive battle environment that will engage players in tactical ground warfare. Capturing the gameplay mechanics of the original title, such as the map view and platoon management, M1 Tank Platoon II showcases more detail, realistic graphics, dynamic mission generation, advanced artificial intelligence and multiplayer support over the network, modem or serial connection. Players command a platoon of M1A2 Abrams tanks from either the gunner or tank commander position, ordering air and ground artillery support as needed to accomplish missions. M1 Tank Platoon II players can also choose to get in the trenches of battle with more than 70 different combat vehicles (ranging from Apache and Russian Hind helicopters to the A-10 Warthog attack fighter plane), or they can mastermind battles using the map view and watch the platoon execute the player's command with precision.
Gameplay takes place within a graphically enhanced 3-D environment that features photorealistic cockpits, thermal targeting view, texture-mapped terrain plus textured and animated vehicles. As platoons experience combat, they improve. After battles, the players can determine who in the platoon deserves awards, promotions or punishments. This allows the player to develop high-quality platoons that can be used in tough battles. Authentic insignia from the platoon's parent unit (both Army and Marine) are provided in the game and assigned to platoons as the player creates them.
Training Mode - To help players become familiar with the M1A2 Abrams battle tank, the first training mode takes players to the armor school at Fort Knox, where the U.S. Army conducts similar training. Training includes gunnery and navigation sessions for a single tank, and sessions for controlling a platoon of tanks such as formation and battle drills. At Fort Knox, the player can learn and practice skills in a "safe environment" and take their time doing so. The National Training Center is the second training mode in M1 Tank Platoon II, which takes place at Fort Irwin and introduces players to the tactics used in modern tank combat. Actions learned at Fort Irwin include Contact, Deliberate Attack, Defend in Sector, Hasty Attack and more.
Single Battle - Once ready for combat, players can try Random Battle mode, which provides instant action with a random battle scenario that pits the player against front-line Russian equipment. Then players can move on to a variety of preconfigured battles and replay great historical and hypothetical conflicts. Gulf War scenarios include the famous 6-minute 73 Easting Encounter, in which the Iraqis lost over 50 tanks without creating one U.S. casualty. Classic Cold War encounters such as the Fulda Gap scenario provide an even stiffer challenge.
Campaign - This mode allows players to try their hand as a military strategist fighting a sequence of 3-12 battles within a campaign theater. M1 Tank Platoon II provides five campaign theaters to choose from: Gulf War II, North Africa, Russian Far East, the Balkans and Central Europe. Every mission in a campaign is dictated by the players demonstration of strategic mastery from the previous mission. The mission type and the size of enemy forces available depends on the player's performance.
Multiplayer - Four players each command one tank within the same platoon, while a fifth takes charge of the competing forces, providing a mix of cooperative and competitive multiplayer gameplay. Players can fight battles over the network, modem or serial connection.
